Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has any comments/tips for me,

Im looking to get an Iphone and am in two minds as to whether to get it on a O2 contract or just buy it from ebay unlocked instead?

Does it make a difference and is it worth it to get on a contract (given that it costs 269.99 for the handseat plus the monthly 35 quid a month for the tariff itself)

I can't really comment as to getting a contract as I'm not familiar with the contract terms for the Euro carriers like O2, vodafone, etc. I was already in a contract with AT&T so I went ahead and bought the iPhone from Apple locked to AT&T.

If you don't want a contract I would suggest either buying a used locked phone and unlocking it yourself with ZiPhone. You can unlock with ZiPhone with 1 click in about 30 seconds. or you can buy one already unlocked on ebay through a reputable seller. From what I can tell though people jack up the price on phones already unlocked. I can't believe people pay that much extra for them when unlocking is so easy.

Welcome to EIC. You will find lots of help here. Hope you enjoy it and good luck on getting an iPhone.

Welcome to EIC.com!

As to your question, I understand the desire to unlock an iPhone, but be sure to check out the iPhone Modification (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/) forum here before you take the plunge. There are some critical things to know, not the least of which is that the only support you'll have is forums like these if you happen to brick your device. In the spirit of disclosure, though, I'm conservative when it comes to my toy. I haven't unlocked, jailbroken, or otherwise performed any unauthorized modification (and yes, I love it!).

Cheers,

-K

Good advice above, so i would advise for you to keep your iphone stock not unlocked as you may be paying extra just to get unlock and i know for a fact than you can unlock it yourself through Jailbreak. Now as far as contracts go i stay away from the personally they have ruined my life, if you can afford 2-3 years of A** raping then go for it, otherwise i suggest a simple solution, Buy the Simplest plan there is with no extra features and then just add on your features like free after 6:00pm for instance for an extra 5$ you will save mad money trust me.

I wonder if there are any UK ppl here with an Iphone on O2 contract? The reason why I ask is im trying to find out if there is n e benefit (in functionality) in getting it on contract rather then just ebay jobby...IE does the iphone provide n e features which only work when on a contract like visual voicemail or n e thing of the sort? Im a total newby so have no idea wht the iphone can actually do (other then the obvious stuff you see on ads etc) but just really like its looks, and seems to be quick compared to my slow O2 XDA (otherwise known as the HTC Wizard)...

I would stick with the provider for you area. I would hate to have an iphone and not be able to use all the apps that come with it. You might want to consider waiting to buy the 3G version that is rumored to be coming out later this year.
