Thank you but I mispoke...It was imap.aol.com. Having trouble reestablishing my AOL account. Asking for "user name"...which is different than screen name. For the longest time, I had absolutely no trouble but now it is really giving me problems.

Thanks, in advance, to those of you who can give me some guidence and to the two who already responded.

Matt

When trying to send an email, I get a message "check account settings for outgoing server "smtp.aol.com".

Could someone please tell me what this means and how to address this problem. Thank you.

I wish I could tell you, but my settings never change (they're always correct!), and I get random messages that 1) my settings aren't correct or have been changed 2) my user name or passwords are incorrect. I can't do anything because there is nothing to change!
I'm not sure, but I think it's more than an iPhone problem, as I get the same problem with my MBP or MBA Mac mail. Sometimes, I can't sent an email through smtp.aol.com and it will go through another server (earthlink.net or mac.com).
The problem usually fixes itself eventually without input, only to reappear at a later time.
I often go directly to AOL.com on Safari and retrieve/send my email from there.

Thank you for your note. I did call Apple support and the guy did not really know. Suggested I "restore" my entire phone but admittedly was not sure if it would help. Suggest calling AOL but I do not think that would help. At first, it just worked great. Took me 30 secs to get it up and running. I remember saying "painless". Now nothing.

Do you feel a restore would help?

I don't think it would, if it happens on different machines, but your problem might be different than mine since it doesn't work at all. It wouldn't hurt to try.
