I just wanted to say hello, and introduce myself. I'm getting an iPhone in the next couple months (Just doing research and weighing my options before buying), and this looked like a helpful forum. I would like to run my plans by you all and see if you have any suggestions, or see any problems with what I would like to do. I have been reading about iPhone mods in general for a few weeks now.
1.) I plan on using ZiPhone 2.6b to do the big three.
2.) I am with T-Mobile, and have more than a year left in my contract, so I'm going to stick with them. I don't think I could afford to switch to AT&T, unless they come out with some kind of "MyFaves for AT&T. I'm going to change my plan to think I have a Sidekick, and get the Sidekick unlimited add-on. It's $20 a month for unlimited EDGE access and unlimited messaging. That will put my plan right around 65-70 a month with tax.
3.) I would like to change the carrier logo to be a custom one I made. I downloaded a custom one off here, and using GIMP, I changed it to be custom, and saved it in the same size/format (PNG). I was going to use THIS (http://www.iphonedevelopernetwork.com/node/22) tutorial for changing the logo. Do you guys think that's the best/easiest way to do this?
4.) If I jailbrake my iPhone, I'm not going to lose any features, am I? I read somewhere (don't know if it's fake or not) that you lose the ability to have Google Map "locate me." in 1.1.3.
5.) I'm not 100% clear on this, so could someone clear this up for me? From what I read, most phones come with 1.1.2 now, and need to be downgraded to 1.1.1 before registerring, unlocking, and jailbreaking the phone. Is that true? Next, once it's registerred, unlocked, and jailbroken, I can upgrade to 1.1.3, right? If so, all I do is use a iTunes update file for 1.1.3 and shift-click update, right?
After iPWNED is out and confirmed to be working and problem-free, I plan to upgrade to it. As with the PSP, I'm sure this breakthrough is going to bring on a great number of custom firmwares for the phone. I can't wait to see where this goes. :)
