HELP!!! hard drive crashed, machine repaired, iTunes reinstalled and re-authorised. My complete library, including playlists, are on my iPod and I want to copy this back across to the pc. I'm afraid if I just connect them, the empty database on the pc will overwright the ipod and the world will end.

Please don't be like my mum and tell me I should have backed everything up twice; let's stay with the here-and-now foolish position I'm in, and someone save the day..... Today? before the weekend?

I suspect this has been answered before but I'd be grateful if I could get it again please.

I use Tansee to do it. Easy program and well worth the 20 bucks it costs. :)

Many thanks woofus, I'll check out the link. I used a freebie, sharepod, it did the trick but I had to a bit of housekeeping afterwards, No big deal though, I'm back in business.

If nothing else, if you're jailbroken you can go into the iTunes folder via SSH and retrieve everything, albeit completely renamed, reorganized, and reaggravationated.

Cheers Dave, I managed to solve the problem and I now have back-ups.

seriously, you did what I said? How on earth could you make sense of all that? How big was your library?

You must be a patient man.

I know that you found a way to solve this on your own already, but in case anyone else with similar problems peeks in here, I've used a free iPod management program called Yamipod to extract the contents of my ipod to a single place. I don't remember whether I saw any of the irregularities involving file names. Perhaps that only happens if one takes the files from the ipod manually, by treating it as a removable storage device. I'm not sure what you ended up doing, but whatever it was, if it worked for you, I give you major props.
