I found this post (http://modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58541) over on MMi, and if their site wasn't festering with inline sponsored Ads I'd just tell ya to head there to find out more.
Anyway, Skrew has released a cool application to convert your NON-DRM Songs to Ringtones :)
http://i.danstaface.net/beta/images/ring1.jpg
Its pretty easy to use, and it basically uses the first 30 seconds of whatever song you choose. Or, you can select the starting point in your song, and use the following 30 seconds as your ringtone! :D (new to 2.0)
The install is pretty simple, although you will need make sure you have the following:
- BSD Subsystem
- SUID Lib fix (only if you have 1.1.3/4) !
Add this source on installer to download : http://i.danstaface.net
Note: There is a one time download of a 2.6 meg binary which is part of the program. The author chose to make this a post install file on its own because the author wanted to save himself bandwidth on updates. By making this binary separate, you only ever need to download it once instead of having it download with each update he makes (there were already 3 updates today for example).

Yep, works like a charm. You may experience a bit of an issue on your first go, but everything after that is smooth sailing.
Take notice however, that DRM'd songs won't make the switch, only DRM-Free songs can be converted.

this doesnt change my music it just makes a "copy" of the song it a ringtone format with out having to do it on the pc ??

Yeah, it takes a 30 sec clip or so of the song and dumps it into the /Library/Ringtones folder.
Your original file is left untouched.

ok. I installed it and it seems to have worked. It shows up in the ringtones list but it only previews about five seconds of it so I dont know if it completely worked or if its just going to play the first five seconds over and over. Just have to wait for a call and see.

I did a little reading around and apparently, its a common quirk with the program that your first ringtone may playback incorrectly. Interestingly, every ringtone created after that works fine. The author is trying to track down this bug, but the fact that it works fine after the 1st try leads me to believe hes fine with things as they are. Its taken him quite a bit of work and updates in the passed few days to even get the application to this point.
That said, give it another go by first deleting your ringtone from the ringtones menu in this application, followed by creating a new one. It should work just fine at that point, and if you still run in to problems it may be because the song you're trying to convert is protected with DRM, i.e. its a song you bought from iTunes.

No go for me. :(
When I try to create a ringtone, it never shows up under the ringtone section. I've tried to make around 20. I'm on 1.1.3.

Do these songs contain DRM, Digital Rights Management?
In other words, did you buy them from iTunes? If so they will not convert to ringtones unfortunately.
If this is the case, I just burn them to an audio CD and just rerip them since a loss in quality is moot for ringtones.

Duely noted when you have a desktop available.

maybe easier but I'm not paying two bucks for thirty seconds of a song I already bought on cd

I haven't bought a single song through iTunes though.

This is interesting, I guess the next thing to ask is if you have also intalled the BSD Subsystem, as well as the SUID fix that goes along with the BSD Subsystem?
The application does a few terminal commands in the background, and if it's dependencies are not found, the app doesn't appear to alert you of the problem unfortunately.
If you've got those installed and you're still not getting any results, I think the last thing we can try is setting the permissions of your /Library/Ringtones folder to 777.

*DO NOT UPDATE TO 2.2*
I just saw a new update for this app in installer, I think its version 2.2. I installed the update and tried to run the app but gave me an "error at step 8" message. Now I went to my sounds settings and the only ringtone I have there is the mamba ringtone. Everything is gone even the default ones. What happened to all my ringtones? Help.

Make sure you still have the version lower than 2.2 so that it will work properly. Yes the app will look for the songs in your ipod so the best thing to do is make a song sorter for your ringtone.

2.3 is out, it fixes this issue, and it has been reported that it will restore your stock ringtones if any were "lost."

Is it all the stock ringtones, or just a few? If so, list the missing tones and I will host them on my Installer Repo as a "Fix."
I'll host it for a week or so until the affects of 2.2 have gone out of circulation.
Just let me know what ringtones to host.

Glad it is working for you, I was under the assumption you may have been trying to make ringtones out of DRM (itunes purchased) songs, which unfortunately doesn't work.
This update seems to be working across the board for everyone now.

Are you converting DRM'd songs?
---
DRM songs won't convert, and I'm not quite sure why your ringtones disappeared like that.
Are you certain you're using Ringtones 2.5?
Heres a link to a forum post (http://modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58541) the author of this program checks in on for any issues that may arise. I suggest you post your query there if you don't find a solution already present in the thread.

Installed it, and WOWSERS it worked fine.
I have struggled for ages, even through iTunes chaning m4a files to m4r files and importing them, it went on fine as m4r but always kept duplicated the first file in the list.
i.e. the three fiels I added to the phone asr CTU, Vasey and Maiden.
All three show up fine in the iTunes RINGOTNES fodler and play correctly, BUT in the folder on the phone itself when I am choosing the ringtone it plays the CTU tone for all three entries that I added.
SOOOOO this little app that you suggested works much better than the m4r import.
Cheers guys you've made my day!
Vr1.1.4 BTW

Try reinstalling the application, and keep in mind that this won't work on songs that you bought through iTunes. Rather, this work son MP3s you've either ripped or got from somewhere other than itunes.

Ok, so I will this work on a 1.1.1 iphone?
- BSD Subsystem
- SUID Lib fix (only if you have 1.1.3/4) !
Does the BOLD part mean that i only need the SUID Lib fix if i have 1.1.3/4, and not on 1.1.1 etc... or does it mean you need the SUID Lib fix, and that is only on 1.1.3/4 and so therefore this app only works on 1.1.3/4!

This should work without the section in Bold. Thats only there for 1.1.3/4 users because something in BSD got "broken" and that patch fixes it.
Try it with just the BSD Subsystem installed. If it doesn't work, its really easy to upgrade to 1.1.4 now with ZiPhone. Head to the modifications forum for more info on Ziphone.

hi,
I tried downloading the new version of this app which is 2.74
But when i download it gives me an error "unable to install" or "install error"
Basically it does not let me install at all.
I already have the BSD system installed. Also i used to have the old version of this programe and that was fine but when i tried to update it failed
So i uninstalled it and now i cannot install it at all it keeps on giving me the error.

I have since uninstalled this program as the Author is unwilling to help anyone who has had their Ringtones deleted by his application.
His attitude on the matter is "it works on mine..."
That said, I advise anyone still interested in this application to use it at your own risk, and most importantly, backup your /var/Ringtones folder.

Its worth a shot.
Have you checked your /var/Ringtones folder for permissions/owner issues first? if the tones are there you might not need to even bother with copying over new ones.
Owner: 0 is equal to root and Owner: 501 is equal to mobile.
Permissions should be at the least 775 on the tones and folder.
I can post my default Ringtones folder (I have a backup) to my beta repository if you'd like to try installing that way. Its no guarantee it will work, but how much more broken could it get at this point?

no problem x999x, i just glad this apps works again, its a huge step from purchasing from rip-off tunes lol, by the way, i download music from seeqpod.com i believe to my phone, its a must to have 1.1.2 Download plugin from CopyCoders repo and SendFile app from installer, the download plugin allows u to download music from seepod.com to your iphone, the music is then transferred to sendfile which is under var/root/downloads, then i use iphone suite to convert it to a mp4 and then transferred to my ipod, from there i make my ringtones, i dont know if u knew about seeqpod.com, but i thought i would mention it :)

No problem, if you ever download Zip files, like apps from places other than installer, or whatever, I have a program called Peelr that compliments the SafariDL plugin. I'm going to do a quick video on that one next.
I've been having some fun downloading NES roms now that it supports Diagonal movement again. Peelr has been working great at unpacking them for me :) It scans the Downloads folder for any Zip files, unzips them and moves the contents to the Peelr directory. It then cleans out the zip files from your Downloads folder to save wasted space :)

Ive used the program on my pc called
"iRinger" http://www.iringer.net/
-free, uses songs in your iTunes or imported from
anywhere else, lets you slide the bar to the 30 sec's,
preview, shorten, fade in or out, then name it and save
-the ringtone goes into your iTunes library as if
it was purchased so NO Jailbreak is even necessary
I've enjoyed it for awhile now so thought I'de share

I've used this program for just a few minutes, and only converted ringtones via the the 'QuickConvert' feature. Worked great! I've got 20 or so of my favorite songs as ringtones for various 'Groups' in my Contacts.
I didn't have any previous RTs so I can't say anything about that issue.

try resetting settings. go under settings>general>reset
hopefully you will not have to do a restore
if you have installed last version you can find a script in /bin/ named skrewfixperm.sh
Try to change chmod 0777 with 0755 or other value in script and execute it
(You maybe have to change chmod and chown to chmod -R and chown -R if you have played yourself with rights in songs)
Script can look like :
#!/bin/sh
/bin/skrewchmod +s /usr/bin/chown
/bin/skrewchmod -R 0755 /Library/Ringtones
/usr/bin/chown -R 0:wheel /Library/Ringtones
/bin/skrewchmod -R 0755 /var/Ringtones
/usr/bin/chown -R 0:wheel /var/Ringtones
/bin/skrewchmod -s /usr/bin/chown
I really dont know what to do with this @#@#@#@# permissions, as it can work for some ppl and don't for others...
If anyone have to final solution thanks to email me
BTW, you don't have to convert songs since 2.8x version, and some ppl reported it work even with drm songs.

Why you don't help me to debug this problem?
Yes it work on mine, i don't release a soft who delete ringtones!
How i can see why it trash your ringtones folder ? With a magic ball ? a hidden webcam ? A spyware on your iphone ?
How i can do personal support on my 523 forums / blogs referral ? i have to register on all and past 12 hours / day doing F5 and see if user have problem ?
How i can help users who write me by mail and tell me "heee ssh what ? bosstool ? heee vnc? its a virus no ?"
How i can help ppl who write me "ringtones said i running out of space and i have to read FAQ ... now what i do ?"
How i can help user who have 0 bytes free on system partition and blame me (and i suppose all applications authors know this problem) as installer application let user install anything without check free space ?
If you think you can do better than me, no problem, i can forward all mails and give you all referals, just show me how doing a good support on your free time...
I know you are a user from the first release, i thanked you for putting my link on forums, but don't say things like that... Just contact me and give me tips or idea who can fix problems... Its more constructive
Saying that i don't care about users is false, i do ~3 updates / week for trying to fix problems, and now its take me most time to try to fix problems than add more features...
And last, on my forum i have telling people to help me beta testing 2.8 release and i got 4 mails... only 4 for ~ 400 downloads / day ...
So its easy to say it don't work but giving me 20 minutes for testing seem impossible to most users...
So now, i think about putting my futures applications (the next will be display call/sms count, todo list, calendar(...) on lock screen) to private users only until i got 100% positive returns. but ... If i found enought testers ... Its another story...

Thanks for posting, but lets be honest here, people have been having problems since release, that is a constant, and with every new release more people have experienced problems.
I appreciate you coming here to rectify the situation, but the fact of the matter is not many people have access to, or understand how to use the Terminal to fix what your program has done. These people have no choice but to restore their phones.
How can I help? By letting people know to avoid the program before the problems start, as they have for myself, the posters in this thread and those on those MMi who have also lost their default Ringtones. I really don't want to take responsibility for fixing this issue when A) its not my program, and B) I'm not sure if permissions alone actually FIX the problem, rather its just a bandaid for a User issue or something else entirely. Guess what happens if it doesn't work? My inbox will be flooded with "Hey it didn't fix it" emails.
Speaking of which, you're not the only person with an inbox full of "How do I" emails, I am very familiar with this. I run my own repo and have to go through my inbox to find the problems that are actually related to my own projects on a daily basis. Contributing to the iPhone Community is entirely voluntary, and being a good samaritan is going to bring an influx of people looking for help. How you wish to respond to these outside requests is entirely up to you, so please understand that you are not alone.
Yes, private releases make more sense, I run my own contributions in a sandbox first before deploying it and creating a trickle affect of problems, which is what you're experiencing now. I understand your frustration, but please consider the frustration of those who have had to restore because they have no other options. I carry the burden of their anger because I have introduced them to this application. As you can see from my post and thanks count I take my posts seriously, as do those who read them -- and thats where my own frustration starts to weigh in.
Thanks for posting, and I appreciate your posted fix, but please understand we are not bashing and I am not bad mouthing your application. We are troubled users who have gotten no feedback here or in MMi until now.

I really love this app. Hopefully it will come to a point where it won't be as buggy as what people are saying.

Ok so people don't just complain about "i lost ringtones" or something else...
Restoring is not a fatal issue!
Ringtones application don't delete your ringtones. it just try to fix the folder ringtones permissions. It work for some people and don't others.
Why ?
I don't know! depend of what you have done before, software ectect.
A french user just said me than updating bosspref make ringtones back. Don't tell me what bosspref do with ringtones folder i don't know it (but i install it now for looking)
BTW, don't use converter for now, just use the "Direct ringtones" mode. It don't need to convert and use your songs directly. Just choose a song, press "set as default ringtones" and you are done! make a test call!
Don't use "edit and convert ringtones".
Also make sure you have "enable ringtones!" enabled and make sure you have rebooted your iphone as it tell when you install it.
For people who have "lost" ringtones, contact me before restoring! Thanks

Version 2.84 with a new script for permission and a quick note for using direct ringtone. For users who have stock ringtones problem, use "edit and convert ringtones", and after sanity check test yours ringtones.
Please make a feedback

I have 2.83 and I selected the "edit & convert ringtones" option and then exited after the checking process AND now, my ringtones are BACK!!!!
I have no idea how that worked but I saw Skrew's post on doing that on the 2.84 version and figured I'll give it a shot. Didn't even notice I have the 2.83 version.
I am so happy I don't need to restore!!! Others, please post your findings! Perhaps we have a quick fix! :laugh2:

Any news with permissions ?
Fix who work for Amiroo79 don't work for some users, as usual ...
I changed ringtones application (but same version) some hours ago to :
/bin/skrewchmod -R 0755 /Library/Ringtones
/usr/bin/chown -R 0:admin /Library/Ringtones
Don't get bad report at this moment ...
Also great news for me: i watched stats for the last week i do ~14.000 downloads / day. Thanks all! :)
edit : correction, its 14.000, not 4000 :)

Has this ever happened to anyone of you guys? I've created several ring tones using this app. I made "song a" my main ring tone and assigned "song b" to my girlfriends number. Every now and then when my girlfriend would call me I would get the ring tone "song a". I wonder what triggers it to do that. The funny thing is that it’s random, most of the time I would hear the assigned song for her number (song b) when she calls but there a times where it would be the main ring tone (song a). There's no way for me to really replicate the problem coz I don’t know what’s happening. I'm hoping that there would be a fix to to this problem on future updates.
