I don't think it works unless you get the Apple branded one. You might find a used cable on ebay, but I wouldn't count on it.

It seems you are not going to find it much cheaper than $49.
The following link says that this A/V cord is for the iPhone, but I am thinking they are wrong. I would not buy it, because I don't think it will work with the iPhone. http://www.colordrives.com/apple-iphone-av-cable.html
$49 Clicky-Clicky (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/520691-REG/Apple_MB129LL_A_Composite_AV_Cable_for.html)
$49 Click #2 (http://www.powermax.com/parts/show/a-mb129ll__a?src=g)
$49 Official Clicking (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=302ABB2C&fnode=home/shop_iphone/iphone_accessories&nplm=MB129LL/A)
I have the Composite AV Cable and it works well, but I am certain there is a way to display what is actually on the screen with the cable. (Only because it was done in the keynote and other conferences) Without some sort of hack it only displays/plays you tube videos, ande songs and videos. I wish you could see the homescreen and such but the screen just goes blank!

i bought a 3 or 4 dollar cable at radio shack that allows me to play my music thru my stereo when i have it docked at home. one end is 1/8th inch male jack the other end is 2 x rca jacks. Didnt really care about video playback but i guess that should work too.

Yeah but I dont think it does, because the Apple Composite cable contains a chip or something so it recognises the device as an iPhone. If it doesn't contain this chip I have heard it will not work.
