i am thinking of getting a macbook, and i am not sure if i can download programs off of bittorent like i can on my pc. anyone care to let me know?

Yes, you can. I use Azureus all the time and other clients (like bittorrent) will also work.

I too use Azureus. Works fine.

I just got Azureus and it works great.
