a third party app is an application not developed by apple and probably released through a jailbreak, such as Installer, etc whereas a first party app is an application that WAS developed by apple - MobileMail, Safari, etc.

Pretty soon (hopefully) there will be new third party apps supported by apple (sdks) and they do a wide aray of things some are games some are just totally useless and some can help you
