THe exact number of devices available on launch day is a closely-guarded secret (Thanks, Steve). However, I can tell you that 50% of the devices were made available to Apple retail and 50% were made available to AT&T retail. Then they were allocated by region, then market, then district, and finally to store...

Again - I think all stores - Apple & AT&T alike - will sell out by end of business Friday night

Aargh... this is a slippery one.

In my region (a large geographic area), I haven't heard of any stores getting as few as 10 (though perhaps close). I know of stores getting more than 150.

I thought that I read somewhere that the inital order was for 2 million phones. Which would average about 100 phones per store if every store were to be shipped the same amount which they are not.

i gotta be 100% honest,
i dont think they are gonna sell out...
apple has been obviously been keeping this a big secret
and yes, the release will be huge...
but think about it....
they are def not worried about losing any money because they are charging us double what it cost them to make...
they will be making a profit after about the first hour i predict...
anyone else agree

As of yesterday afternoon, I was able to look to see how many were on order for my store. All the stores in my area have done the same, and we've communicated our order amounts to one another.

I anticipate my store will sell out before 8pm, depending on how fast we can move customers through the process

If I start commenting on my region, the peculiarities of my area that would affect demand, oe stock quantities, those from above with eyes on these forums could narrow things down. I've already received several emails from forum users wanting me to answer questions (could be people in my company trying to smoke me out) - if I use the forum's email submission form, my email address is revealed. If I answer via my email web client, my IP is revealed. Yes, I do think they take this stuff THAT seriously

No offense ATT Employee I appreciate your contribution.

I will just comment on the irony of an ATT Employee who actually now has information and being unwilling to share it with us, when every AT&T employee on the planet DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING they had no problem making stuff up and lying.

I just find it very amusing is all. If your co-workers were as capable of being as closed mouth as you when they did not have any facts, as you are with facts, we would have had a lot less rumor mongering going on here the last few weeks and months.

I don't want to you to risk you job, but let me give you a scenario. I live in the suburbs of NYC and plan on going to a corporate AT&T store on Friday. I plan to get there by 10-11AM. In your opinion, is that early enough to ensure a phone? Keep in mind, there is a big mall 10 minutes from this AT&T store that has both an Apple Store and a corporate owned AT&T store.

Ensure a phone? I dunno. As I said... I believe that my store will be out of them and on direct fulfill exclusively by 8pm. My opinion is that most other stores will be in the same boat. Stock was not arbitrarily assigned to stores. It was based on volume and anticipated demand due to location

I figure they will start out with 250,000 phones. Average per store will be 125. Some more, some less. 250,000 online.

Remember, they are wanting to sell 10,000,000 phones in 10 months per estimates.

Production will have to put out a million phones a month. They started about a month ago (after FCC approval) and should have around at least 500,000.

Exact same I've heard from both Apple and AT&T friends. They will know the numbers when they get them, that's it. There is no database, there are no lists and there are no numbers. Most of them don't even know about the videos on apple.com.

We know...

-iPhones are not terribly difficult to make, so there probably wont be shortages due to unavoidable manufacturing problems from parts that have a high failure rate etc...

-The iPhone hype is already though the roof so apple won't need to create shortages by shipping less to artificially create hype. This also goes to counter the possibility that they didn't make many because they don't expect many sales.

-Typically Apple stores get more than enough product for expectable in demand products. Hopefully they will also apply this to AT&T stores.

-Obviously the Apple stores will get more than the AT&T stores.

As for how the necessity to camp, I would say, you should be secure in showing up 1-2 hours early at an AT&T store. The average consumer will be going to an Apple store, they see the iPhone more as an iPod than a phone, so they will be going to what in their minds is the iPod store (see interviews with early campers outside of NY Apple store). This means that the AT&T stores will most likely be the best bet to a purchasing location.

In conclusion, go to an AT&T store an hour or two early, it will probably be far less crowded, and you won't be hassled there to upgrade your plan because you can always activate it at home.

^^While there is a video on home activation I refuse to believe they are going to make EVERYONE activate the iPhone at home. The simple reason being that many of the new buyers may be completely unfamiliar with iTunes and while iTunes will be a necessity to owning the iPhone I still believe that they will activate the iPhone at the AT&T store if you so desire.

If you think about it, how can you activate the phone in the store? That would mean each store would have to have a kiosk of some type with iTunes installed. Remember you are linking the iPhone to your iTunes account. Each customer would have to log into their iTunes account at the ATT store. Doesn't make sense to me and would take a bit longer for each transaction.

Take it home, plug it in, activate, raise hands towards the sky, rejoice! :2cool:

iPhonePro07
06-29-2007, 12:03 AM
You can't activate the store. The employees are not allowed to touch your product at all. They are not allowed to open the box even if you ask them to. They are too worried about being liable for people saying "the employee opened my bbox, now charge THEM the 10% restocking fee" or something along those lines. So be prepared to do it yourself.
