Either might change as the software evolves but I don't think the iPhone will ever support applet Java.

Apple has hinted at Flash but I personally think Flash support will be coming... I would not be surprised if Apple is in talks with Adobe to cook up a special player. I think there's a couple security issues Adobe might have to plug up before Flash is ready for primetime.

There has been a flash player for mobile phones out for a few years now. Most phones in Japan have it. I saw it displayed at a Macromedia Convention 3 years ago.

I don't know why the iPhone did not incorporate it.

It's called "Flash Lite" <---kinda clever if you ask me.

The thing is, Apple touts the iPhone as having a full web browser—people would expect the same for Flash, not some mobile "lite" version. imho, any form of flash is better than nothing but a better implementation later is better than a half-assed one now.

What's interesting is Adobe is helping sponsor iPhoneDevCamp's Hack-a-Thon (http://barcamp.org/iPhoneDevCampAdobeFAQ). And they're making participants sign an NDA. Now why they're doing that I have no idea... they can't keep their own people quiet and not leak anything?

Q: Does this mean that the iPhone supports Flash?
A: We suggest that folks speak to Apple directly about what technologies the iPhone will support and integrate. Our relationship with Apple continues to be strong. Naturally we believe that support for Flash is essential for any mobile device that wants to deliver a great experience for customers.
I want to believe that's a roundabout way of saying "We want to include Flash with iPhone but Apple is still considering the implications."
