A simple how-to (Windows):
Update (02/11/2007 6:01 PM MST): Mac stuff removed from guide.
Update (02/13/2007 9:51 AM MST): GUI version is out, much easier!
Update (02/13/2007 12:45 PM MST): ZiPhone 2.0 now out! Guide updated.
Update (02/14/2007 12:32 PM MST): ZiPhone 2.1 now out! Guide updated.
Update (02/15/2007 9:14 AM MST): ZiPhone 2.2 now out. Verbose option removed. Guide updated.
Update (02/16/2007 2:18 PM MST): ZiPhone 2.3 now out. Guide updated.
Update (02/18/2007 9:41 AM MST): ZiPhone 2.4 now out. GUI version not included. Guide not updated.
1.) Perform a full restore to 1.1.3 via iTunes. You want to be on freshly restored 1.1.3. Don't bother syncing to iTunes, you can do that later. You can accept to restore from your previous backup now, or wait till you are finished jailbreaking 1.1.3.
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/jb1.png
2.) Download ZiPhone2.3.zip (http://rapidshare.com/files/92908198/ZiPhone2.3.zip.html)(download updated 2/18/2007 9:41 AM MST) and extract its contents into a folder on your computer. Under Windows I recommend creating the folder c:\ZiPhone and extracting the contents there.
3.) Open "My Computer" and navigate to c:\ZiPhone, or wherever you extracted the contents of ZiPhone.zip. Double-click into the ZiPhone folder and then double-click ziphoneGUI.exe.
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/jb2.png
4.) At the main ZiPhone GUI screen check-off Jailbreak. Click start.
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/jb3.png
5.) That's it! You will have Installer on your springboard. Enjoy. Close ZiPhone GUI. (The actual jailbreak process takes less than 3 minutes!)
Success! By FAR this was way easier than the previous jailbreak methods.

iBrickr, Funtastic, and iPhoneBrowser act like the iPhone is still not jailbroken and they can't be used to transfer files:
This is due to afc2 not being started. It can be fixed by editing a single plist. See here:

Or add this source in Installer:
http//i.unlock.no
Then install ZiPhone iBrickr Fix. Reboot iPhone for changes to take (turn completely off, then back on again).

Does the jailbreak still have the problems with syncing contacts and using the finder on google maps or has all of that been fixed. I haven't checked on these things in a while.

That's all been fixed with this new jailbreak.
Will test movie rentals next...

When you do the restore should you activate it or leave it at the slide for emergency screen?

I let it activate, but did not sync till I had everything working. Actually I did not even restore from the backup till I had it jailbroken.
Then I went to iTunes and told it to use my prior settings backup, which it did without issue.
Looks like movie rentals work too (they didn't work with any 1.1.3 jailbreak previously).

This was released by Zibri, hence Ziphone. This was the jailbreak the dev team had been holding up--it's the real deal.
Still testing apps but I can confirm that movie rentals work!

First, "off" means off, not sleep. After it's off you then hold down Home button while connecting the USB cable. The iTunes logo will appear shortly--let go of Home button when you see it.

A simple how-to (Windows/Mac):
(Note: As of this writing the Mac version is reportedly flaky. There should be an update out shortly.)
1.) Do a full restore to 1.1.3 via iTunes.
2.) Download jailbreak113full.zip (http://rapidshare.com/files/90992326/jailbreak113full.zip.html) and extract its contents into a folder on your computer. Under Windows I recommend creating the folder c:\113jb and extracting the contents there.
3a.) Windows: Open "My Computer" and navigate to c:\113jb, or wherever you extracted the contents of jailbreak113full.zip. Double-click jailbreak.cmd.
3b.) Mac: Open a terminal window and navigate to the folder you extracted jailbreak113full.zip into. Type ziphone j to jailbreak. (Might need to chmod 777 the files first.)
4.) You will be prompted to put the iPhone into restore mode. The on-screen instructions may not be clear. Do not put it into DFU mode! Turn the iPhone off, disconnect it from the USB cable, then hold down Menu button while connecting it to the USB cable again. When the iTunes logo appears let go of the Menu button.
5.) That's it! You will have Installer on your springboard. Enjoy.
Success! By FAR this was way easier than the previous jailbreak methods.

Yes, menu=home (will change the guide, thanks).
As for going back to 1.1.2, yes you can (but you might as well stay with 1.1.3 IMO).

Keep trying. Use the dock if you need to (some people find that easier than using the cable). It took me several tries, but in my case I was originally trying DFU mode.

Less than 5 seconds!
If you can't do that you can try putting it into DFU mode first. If the jailbreak finishes without an Installer icon try it again in regular restore mode.

If it booted up with the Installer icon you are done. Start installing apps!
After going into restore mode it only takes another minute or two to finish the jailbreak--this one is very fast.
Edit: OK I see you wrote "no" Installer icon. If so you'll need to do it again. Make sure you see the iTunes logo with the cable.

DFU mode is what iTunes calls Restore Mode; the phone cannot be used unless it is restored. It is necessary for a few jailbreaks. To enter it, hold the power + home buttons for 10 seconds, then let go of the home button and continue holding the power button.

iBrickr .91 says the same thing (that the iPhone is still in jail). I look at this as a good thing, as it really is jailbroken. Must be that the soft jailbreaks still used parts from 1.1.2.
In any case install BSD subystem, then OpenSSH. Then you can xfer files via SCP.

Yes, Nullriver is overloaded. It took me three tries to get BSD. Don't worry, has nothing to do with the jailbreak itself.

This worked perfectly, thanks Tinman. I have some somewhat off topic questions, but what should I install in order to change the home screen and make use my own or other icons. Is there a good FAQ soemwhere? Also, for the NES emulator, it keeps saying it can't find the host when I go to install, is it just overloaded or is something wrong maybe? Thanks again.

That bit about the home button is going to snag a lot of people. This was my first exposure to that feature (I've always done the 2-button, 20-second, 10-second thing which apparently is wrong?)

What about an unlock? The Ziphone method apparently does it all in just one step. Why the need to have a special method only for a jailbreak? Unless that is all you want.
Just FYI, a friend just tried to do the ziphone method now on a wk1 phone and it apparently bricked it. He's taking it back now. I guess it must have came with 1.1.2 and had an older bootloader. I hope they give him another one!
Also, I have a 1.1.1 OTB version phone that is jailbroken and unlocked with Bootloader 3.9. What would you say is the best way to get it up to 1.1.3 and have it jailbroken and unlocked?

OK... I have a jailbroken 1.1.2 phone. What is meant by step 1 "do a full restore to 1.1.3 via iTunes"?
I want to make sure I don't screw this up. "Full restore" suggest something other than "update", but I'd like to know the exact method of doing this.

No. On a TMobile phone cuz that's who i have service with...
Why would it matter. I basically am interested in a streamlined method to take my existing phone to 1.1.3 without the nerve racking methods out so far that require a chain of things to go right for them to work... i hate sitting there and not having things work.
especially after i saw my buddy brick his phone (which ATT replaced by the way!).

I'm sorry, I was asking if your buddy's phone was an AT&T phone.
Because I got my phone on DAY ONE also. I haven't heard anyone
else saying that they completely bricked there phone without any
way of restoring it back to factory using this new method.

Oh, my bad... Yeah, with ATT. But they said there is something wrong with the phone itself and gave him another one. We kinda saw that as when we put it in restore mode, it did not look right (blank white screen).
He's on his way back now with a new one so we'll see if they gave him a brand new one with 1.1.3 and the new bootloader so we can do it all in one step.
But, I'm still curious to know if the ZiPhone method works or not cuz that seems to be the easiest for a full jailbreak and unlock.

I'm assuming since my phone stopped working that this somehow affected my ability to also install any apps. I tried 10 different ones and it kept saying that it couldn't locate the host.
So after you jailbreak, you telliTunes to restore to a previous version and you should be done right? I did that, and that's where I lost my phone and had that restart problem. I'm back toa normal 1.1.3 phone now with no jailbreak since it forced me to restore.
Looks easy so i might have to give it a try. I have not jailbroken my phone since 1.02 version jailbreak

OK, then via SSH, Mobile Finder, or Terminal rename (or delete) this file:

Thanks Tinman, second try worked with phone functioning. I am new to this so bare with me. I can't seem to download or install any packages. Are they any initial steps I need to as a first time jailbreaker to get this to work? Anything I need on my PC, or should I simply be able to start installing stuff?
i get nada. I restored my phone to 1.1.3 then closed itunes and opened jailbreak.cmd and when it told me to power off phone so i did and took out of dock then i held the home button and placed back on dock and when apple logo appeared i let go home button and phone starts back up but no installer icon and jailbreak.cmd does nada. Tried like 10 times

You have to SSH the iPhone and go into the Plist for the list of programs installed and delete the presence of summerboard, restart, and then you can reinstall it, lemme find the guide. This worked for me :) http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25163&highlight=main+script

Use WinSCP instead (you'll need SSH installed). Just google or search this forum on how to setup and use WinSCP with your iphone.

JB'd and Activated in under 3 minutes. I did this on a Mac but with the PC jailbreak. I didn't feel like waiting :)
There's not much to see (youtube resizing it didnt help either), but the video below was my jailbreak. Worked like a charm, just had a quick hiccup when the Mac iTunes launched when the iPhone rebooted itself during the jailbreak process. I just clicked OK when prompted that my iPhone was detected in recovery followed by just closing iTunes and bringing XP back into focus. When you see the Windows camera wizard prompt come up my iPhone just rebooted into 1.1.3 with Installer on the springboard :)
I still had to setup symlinks for some of my emulators, but thats been about it. Synching worked right out of the gate.

I found a way to get iBrickr/Funtastic to work again.
Fast way:
Use SSH (SCP) to rename Services.plist, located here:
/System/Library/Lockdown/Services.plist
Download the attached file (Services.plist.txt). Rename it to Services.plist. Copy it to the iPhone into /System/Library/Lockdown/.
Advanced way:
Edit this file (use SSH/SCP to get it):
/System/Library/Lockdown/Services.plist
Add the following section (in red square, and in bold) right below the not bold text (which you will have):
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/services.png
In either case then restart the iPhone. iBrickr/Funtastic will work!

I have a jailbroken 1.1.2 phone. Tinmans method mentions retoring to 1.1.3. Im assuming I need to first update the phone to 1.1.3 and then run the jailbreak, correct?
Also, would I be better off deleting all my apps before updating?

You should do a full restore (not update) to 1.1.3. A full restore wipes everything so you'll have a clean 1.1.3 with which to jailbreak.
Also, would I be better off deleting all my apps before updating? Not necessary because the full restore will wipe them anyway (whereas an update would leave a lot of stuff behind--but not usable).

I tried to delete summerboard & the apps with no go. I don't understand why there isn't a icon for the summerboard if it show it installed.
I explained what you have to do in my last post: you have to rename that plist. The reason Summerboard is listed as installed is because it happened to be in the plist when the the jailbreak was first compiled. It's not installed, Installer merely thinks it is.
The jailbreak has been updated so that summerboard is no longer in the list of installed apps. If you really can't rename that plist just re-do the jailbreak, making sure to re-download the file listed in step 2.

Hi Tinam, thanks for the guide. Can you tell me a few things. Does this jailbreak makes Maps work the right way on 1.1.3, not using any apps to help it? Do you or anyone know if MobileStack and Dock work on jailbreak 1.1.3? Can i change all the stock icons to my very own, even the signal/carrier/wifi/rest of that top roll? Hi. I am probably being thick here but please bear with me! I have a 1.0.2 which is not on AT&T or any other "Apple designated" carrier. Therefore, I understand that I will not be able to activate the phone if I upgrade to 1.1.3 using the method in this post. I had bought the phone unlocked and workable with any carrier's SIM card. Therefore, if I use the method in this post, can I then "unlock" the phone so that I can use any SIM card on it? Your advice / directions in this regard will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What works:
iTunes movie rentals (didn't work before under either jailbreak method)
BSD subsystem 2.0
OpenSSH
Installer (duh!)
iNewsGroup 1.0.5
Scetches
iBlackjack
iSolitaire
FiveDice
iPhysics
Snake
Mobile Finder
Mobile Preview
Mobile TextEdit
Still checking... but pretty much everything that worked before still works.
What doesn't:
TuneWiki (didn't work before either--needs an update for mobile user)
Issues:
Restore mode:
Some people have trouble getting into restore mode. If so keep trying and make sure you turn the iPhone completely off first. Then, while holding down the Home button, connect the iPhone's USB cable. When the iTunes logo appears let go of the Home button.
If you still have trouble getting restore to work try DFU mode. Get into DFU (while connected via USB) by holding down Home and Sleep till the Apple logo appears. Then release Sleep and hold Home till the iTunes logo appears.
iBrickr/Funtastic act like the iPhone is still jailbroken and they can't be used to transfer files:
This is due to afc2 not being started. It can be fixed by editing a single plist. See here:

There is no icon when installing openssh... if you need to see an icon you can install 'services' or 'bosspref' from installer. i believe they each have an icon that controls on/off for ssh
you use winscp on your pc if you want to ssh to your phone

Alright, I've had more time to fiddle around with this and I've hit a few snags along the way. I've posted what I've done to fix these small issues for those who may run into similar problems.
Mail Application Doesn't Launch
Problem: Launching the Mail application shows you a white screen and then closes.
Solution: Change the owner of /var/mobile/Library/Mail from "root" to "mobile"
Enter in Terminal: chown -R mobile /var/mobile/Library/Mail
NES, GBA, SNES, PSX Emulators cannot find Roms
Problem: Emulator cannot find Roms when launched.
Solution: Move roms to /var/mobile/Media/ROMs and change the owner of /var/mobile/Media/ROMs to "mobile." Lastly, add a ROMs symlink to /var/root/Media
Enter in Terminal: mv /var/root/Media/ROMs /var/mobile/Media/ROMs
Enter in Terminal: chown -R mobile /var/mobile/Media/ROMs
Enter in Terminal: ln -s /var/mobile/Media/ROMs /var/root/Media/ROMs
BeatPhone cannot find Samples
Problem: BeatPhone states it cannot find any samples when launched
Solution: Move /var/root/Media/BeatPhone to /var/mobile/Media/BeatPhone and change the folder owner to "mobile."
Enter in Terminal: mv /var/root/Media/BeatPhone /var/mobile/Media/BeatPhone
Enter in Terminal: chown -R mobile /var/mobile/Media/BeatPhone
Enter in Terminal: ln -s /var/mobile/Media/BeatPhone /var/root/Media/BeatPhone

That is normal. I also don't think iTunes is accurate as before I synced any iTunes media to my iPhone I checked free space via SSH. The media partition had only 4 MB (and that was due to the camera roll) even though iTunes claimed there was 195 MB of Other.
"Other" BTW is supposed to be anything on the media partition that iTunes can't recognize. FWIW I've had issues with Other even before ever jailbreaking--under 1.0.0.

Cool, thanx. I don't remember it being that much before 113. Went from jb112 to 113 to jb113. If it's normal, that's fine, it's just that I've got a 4gig and every byte counts!!

Be sure you can access your photos.
The only time Mail didn't work right for me is when I didn't get the jailbreak to work the first time through (no Installer icon), and then tried it again without doing a restore first.
Anyway I could be wrong but when that happened I think Photos didn't work either.
My point, and I might update the guide to reflect this, is that the jailbreak seemed much cleaner if it worked the first time through (after a fresh restore). So if this does apply to you, you might consider doing it again in one shot.

Type this at an SSH/terminal prompt:
df -h
That'll give you the real space on each partition.
Here's what mine looks like now (have already moved Applications to the Media partition via BossTool):

Meanwhile iTunes says I only have 877 MB free. Might try to fill the whole thing up to see if I really can't use all of the space.

It shouldn't need to be owned by mobile, and in fact none of my OEM apps are owned by mobile. The mobile user only needs permissions to execute it (0755), or write to it (0777) if it's a setting or whatnot.
I don't think, if the jailbreak went correctly, that you should have to do anything to Mail. This jailbreak doesn't set any permissions on its own--it merely replaces/alters fstab to free the iPhone from jail (and be able to execute on the media partition). My concern would be "what else didn't go right?"
The symlink for NES, etc., is to be expected as it's a problem on the app-side.
Actually, I'm impressed it's only down to a handful of apps that have issues now. I happen to use iNewsgroup a lot and really missed it when moving to 1.1.3. The author released a version he thought would work with 1.1.3 but it didn't (1.0.4--he hadn't moved up to 1.1.3 for a proper test). So I wrote him and within an hour I was testing 1.0.5--and it worked.

And thanks Tinman, I was waiting for you to post a guide like this for 1.1.3. You're posts are always dead on and very helpful. I used your method for 1.1.2 without any issues.
OK, if you agree to update the iPhone will update to 1.1.3. The issue is that you will have remnants left behind.
You can update to 1.1.3 (doesn't take long) and then immediately restore so that you get a clean 1.1.3.
Not sure what happens if you haven't downloaded 1.1.3 yet and go right to restore. But for sure you can use shift-restore to restore to 1.1.3 directly, without going through an update.

What's the downside of just running the jailbreak with a 1.1.3 iPhone? I restored it to 1.1.3 a few weeks ago and don't feel like restoring it and having to copy 8GB of crap all over again. Any issues with this?

Ok cool. I might try this if I get bored...I had a jailbroken iPhone since 1.0.2 or whatever but I quickly realized I hardly ever used any of the apps at all. I'm half tempted to just wait until hopefully the SDK is released and we get official apps that have companies behind them to do proper testing/optimization, etc. IMHO most of the current apps are (with some exceptions) are half-assed attempts or just never fully realized...
Only app I used a lot was scummVM and I can live without it....

I've now got most of my apps back on and most work fine including Customize. It actually found some of my previous settings for sliders, etc.
The following work:
BossPrefs, Customize, Poof, SMB, SSH, HP-12C, VNotes, Sketches, Books, Converter, Pushr, iCountdown, weDict, SysInfo, Squid, iCrossword, iBlackjack, iSolitare, Garf, Frotz, Soduku, Backgammon, Mines & Marble.
The apps that don't work for me yet are iRadio and iFlix. iRadio just opens to a blank screen and closes, and iFlix opes to a blank screen, sits about 30 seconds and closes.
Is this also a owner issue or a rights issue?

The OSX version is back, they say, and I read some comments on Zibri's blog (http://zibree.blogspot.com/2008/02/ziphone-updated.html), and people were having problems. (bus error)
They say you may have to use MobileDevice.framework for it to work on OSX.

I'd like to hear from a Guru as well. I'm still green when it comes to Macs, and would like to know whats up with this Mac version of the JB. From everything I've read it seems pretty flaky. I didn't find one post of a Mac user getting it to work outside VMware/Parallels when I checked lastnight, unfortunately.
To other Mac users out there, the current Jailbreak for PC works flawlessly under VMware.

Do you have 1.1.3 on it already? If not, you will need to restore it to 1.1.3, cleanly. Either way, you can restore to 1.1.3 on your Mac or PC, then just use your Windoze machine to jailbreak. You can then resync everything back on your Mac. Am I right?

Restore to 1.1.3 on the Mac, let it activate and restore settings. Then do the jailbreak on the Windows box (it will stay activated).

I have an OOTB 1.0.2 Jailbroken and unlocked, not sure what method was used to unlock (most likely anysim 1.0.2 which i believe messes up with the baseband), does it matters at this stage still?
Can I just Restore the whole thing to 1.1.3 and then run Ziphone method to jailbrake and unlock? (does it erases all and replaces the old baseband and bootloader withe the new 1.1.3 included baseband and bootloader?)
Or will I get abrick while trying to restore to 1.1.3? will I have to virginize on 1.0.2 first? How can I do it?

Well guys I give up. The jailbreak works fine, installer runs and I can browse all the packages. But whenever I try to download and install anything I get a "download failed" message every time. I have a very strong Wi-Fi connection so it can't be that.
I am new to the whole jailbreak process, but I understand part of this is installing Open SSH on the phone via Installer and then WinSCP on the PC in order to access and drop/move files. Do I have to have WinSCP running and be connected to my phone first in order to downlaod anything off installer?

I'm not sure why you would want another way. You have to be connected to WiFi to use SSH, and getting your IP from your iPhone WiFi settings is certainly the easiest. I guess you could log into your WiFi Access Point and check the DHCP assignments and get it that way, but checking on the iPhone is much easier.

No, you really don't need SSH and WinSCP right away after JB. It simply allows an easy way to connect to and manipulate the file system on your iPhone.
The first thing you should try after JB is run Installer and install the BSD Subsystem and Open SSH (for the future). Do you get an error no matter what applications you try to install?

Yeah that was the problem, I tried BSD first and then SSH, and I got the error just as quickly as when I tried other programs like NES and whatnot. I am at work doing this, and I have a Wi-Fi connection at home that only I use. Should I maybe re-jailbreak, and them wait until I get home? I live alone and have a secure connection so I am literally the only person that uses that one. Would that be worth trying?

And rather than host the file yourself on RapidShare, you should provide a link to the original file: http://iphone-elite.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ZiPhone.zip
It is most likely to be updated and less likely to go dead. A RapidShare file could be a 'backup' offer.
Renaming it doesn't help consistency either :) It should be ZiPhone.zip

You're right, he did in that post and on his blog, as is proper. But this is a completely separate post and the very foundation for this guide is a release made by someone else. Most likely this post will get a lot of attention and a lot of people will be reading it. It is only fair to Zibri who created and released this jailbreak to get full credit for it in the original post.
I made a simple, polite - even friendly - request, it is that simple.

Hi guys, don't mean to interupt. So I had asked if I should re-jailbreak and then try ti install SSh and BSD from my home Wi-Fi. I went ahead re-broke and will try this. My last question for now is this. Is it okay if I do my jailbreaking using WinSCP and whatnot from a PC that does NOT have my iTunes account on it now that I have successfully jailbroke, or does it have to be the same PC?
Reason I am asking is that my Wi-Fi at work may be the problem with me getting download errors in installer, but my iTunes is also here at work. If I can successfully install those apps at home, can I just use my home PC for WInSCP and any other jailbreak related stuff I may want to do (install roms, themes, etc.) without iTunes installed there? Thanks in advance, and BTW, Tinman and other helped me a bunch in this thread, so I don't see the need to start all this drama.

Mike,
I am a newbie when it comes to this type of stuff on my iphone, so please bear with me. i have read the entire thread and just want to clarify my questions...
First, I have an AT&T iphone that has never been jailbroken and is running 1.13 and I use my Mac to sync.
Since I am already on 1.13, must I restore? If not, can I just download the jailbreak file and run it on my windows box (if this is correct i am supposing that i would be at step 4 of your guide)
#5 states that I will have Installer and springboard, as I have never jailbroken before, are these installed during the jailbreak?
Lastly, once JBed, can I then sync with my Mac as I used to?
Thanks in advance, soory for the long post.

The elepant in the room is that Zibri has been accused of stealing this jb. And has been pointed out already this guide is an off-shoot of of the thread regrarding the original announcement.
That said that wasn't the reason for my reply: it was the BS about modifying the distro. All I did was add a few batch files to make it easier for everyone to use and I get grief over it.

Musicmanmu,
I had the post directly above yours and was wondering if you did this on a non-jailbroken phone?
so i have a jailbroken 8gb...using the method the dev team released beforehand. Whats the advantage of doing this? Are they all going to work when sdk comes out? If i need to use ifuntastic to edit should i not restore and rejailbreak with this method.
Basically is this just an easier way to accomplish what the other jailbreaks did and to restore is pointless, or restoring and using this method puts you in a better position for the future?
Is it working for macs yet? Where can we look to see when it is working for macs?
How do you make sure that there is a backup of your contacts and such so that after you jailbreak you can reboot it? Last time i did it, it said the file was corrupt...

you can install what ever you'd like. The first main two are "summerboard" and "customize". Packages are made for those two applications. Then it's up to whatever you want. I personally jailbroke in order to get themes to customize, i don't use a lot of the apps. Games are always fun too. Just click on install in the upper right hand corner :)

Yes, under "install" there are packages labeled "themes (Ucstomize)" anything in there with the green star on the package is available for download. Each package doesnt fulfill everything is the customize program though. But once you download one of those, it will show up in customize. After that, i am having trouble myself by getting it to actually show up on my phone. I dont think you can run customize and summerboard.

I've encountered one problem so far: the Mail application no longer works. It just crashes. Does anyone else have the same problem?

I also wanted to express thanks to Tinman for posting this thread. I have been wanting to jailbreak for a long while (pretty much since I got my iphone in September) but the process always seemed so tedious and difficult.
This process was extremely simple. Again, thanks Tinman.

I really like the iClarified Tutorials (http://www.iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=11). They have a ZiPhone (Mac) Tutorial (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=664) for unlocking the phone. Keep an eye on it for updates. Some have reported it works, some ran into problems. Let me know!
Also, I found a few that say iRadio works fine on their 1.1.3, other say it doesn't. Wonder what the variable is. I'm going to update soon. I haven't touched my phone since 1.0.1. I just hope the new firmware doesn't screw us over. iPhoneAlley reports a possible "unbreakable" firmware (http://www.iphonealley.com/news/unbreakable-firmware-flash-support-coming-alongside-iphone-sdk?). Yeah RIGHT!

From everything i've read, customize doesn't work on 1.1.3 yet.
I did read something about a modified version that works but i didn't try it cause i thought it better to wait for the original.
There was also people saying that it works for them but they ran the nate true version of jailbreak.

i dont claim to be of any knowledge about this but i would say that it all depends on how much work the developer wants to put in before the new sdk is released. some developers might be playing the waiting game.

Looks like there is a stable version of the 1.1.3 Jailbreak for Macs now. I just ran it on mine and worked fine. It's easy, but requires some use of the Terminal application.
Read more about it and download the file here:
http://despreiphone.wordpress.com/2008/02/12/111-oob-to-113-jailbreak-activate-and-unlock/
Note:
Don't worry about the 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 title, start from fresh restored 1.1.3 and go from there (just like in Tinman's guide) ---> Thanks Tinman
I unplugged my iPhone before powering it off (not sure if order matters)
I ran ....ziphone -j first to jailbreak, and then had to run .....ziphone -a to activate.
Good luck.

I've just jailbroke 2 phones using this method, a 3rd later this evening. I did not see a blue screen on the first two at all, are you sure you got into the recovery mode correctly?
I'm sure you've done it plenty of times by now, but just to recap, remove phone from dock, hold the power button, then slide to power off when prompted. Press and hold the Home button and place the phone into the dock. In no more than 5 seconds your iphone will show a connect to iTunes screen, and the jailbreak should take over from there.

What works:
iTunes movie rentals (didn't work before under either jailbreak method)
Then release Sleep and hold Home till the iTunes logo appears.
iBrickr/Funtastic act like the iPhone is still not jailbroken and they can't be used to transfer files:
This is due to afc2 not being started. It can be fixed by editing a single plist. See here:

Hi guys, I really just need to know a couple things. Can I install and run WinSCP on a PC that doesn't have iTunes? Also, once I install BSD and SSH, I can then install the other programs I need to start moving files (themes, ROMS, icons) over via WInSCP right? Finally, if I want to create my own themes and icons, is there particular format and size they need to be? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
so i have a jailbroken 8gb...using the method the dev team released beforehand. Whats the advantage of doing this? Are they all going to work when sdk comes out?
Basically is this just an easier way to accomplish what the other jailbreaks did and to restore is pointless, or restoring and using this method puts you in a better position for the future?
Is it working for macs yet? Where can we look to see when it is working for macs?
How do you make sure that there is a backup of your contacts and such so that after you jailbreak you can reboot it? Last time i did it, it said the file was corrupt...
Thanks in advance

wow, first let me say thanks in advance. seems like a great and friendly forum. i am going to attempt this on my 1.1.3 iphone (it was 1.1.2 ootb when i bought it) which has never had anything done to it. it's never been jailbroken or unlocked.
i get a little confused about this though:
1.) Perform a full restore to 1.1.3 via iTunes. You want to be on freshly restored 1.1.3.
i am at 1.1.3 right now (i upgraded to it the same day i bought my iphone). is it OK to start from this point? i've had the phone about two weeks.
and, do i have to worry about losing my contacts or anything when i do this? i notice on iClarified, they talk about the different commands like -j -u and such, but really, all i want to do is jailbreak the phone, not unlock it.
and, let's say worst case scenario, i mess this up...can i just go back to my virginized 1.1.3?
thanks in advance! can't wait to try this!

--
Mike
Yeah, I read the IRC chat logs for this distro, I'm sincerely torn between who to trust with these jailbreak methods. I have no problem flashing my phone and accepting the risks that come with it, but I do prefer that the software I'm flashing doesn't always come wrapped in a cloud of drama, which has consistently been the case with these jailbreaks. Whats the deal, I mean are Mac and PC hackers working together like putting Cat and Dog people into a tiny box and shaking it up to see what happens?
In any case, the "transparent" additions you've included in the repackage are really the glue that holds this "easy" redistribution together. It's a very nice time saver to double click a CMD file instead of launching a dos box through a run command, then browsing to your JB folder before you can finally execute the jailbreak and pass a flag along with that. It's also a HUGE TIME SAVER for people don't even know what DOS is, how to launch a dos box, or even know the basic DOS commands to navigate their hard drives... I completely understand your reasoning for repackaging, why teach people DOS when you don't have to?

Hey Mike, Question. My phone was working fine, but now there's no sound. meaning i can't hear when people call or they can't hear me. I did a full restore and nothing.
The same thing happened to me. The solution is funny: take your iPhone headphones, stick them in the jack, and out, and in (I know) just to clean out the headphone jack. The phone, due to dust or something, thinks there are headphones in, so speaker and earpiece are off.
I had the same problem, did this, and they worked immediately. If this doesn't work, take it to an Apple Store, with a fresh 1.1.3 firmware, no sign of jailbreak. :)

1) Is OpenSSH verified as installed when you view your "uninstall" tab in Installer?
2) I don't use Term-v100 myself, I do it through Leopard's Terminal in the Utilities folder

Does this come up every time you try to connect? I would think once it acquired a new key it would stop doing this, but you're saying it doesn't?
Gonna go back to the basics, but how many times have you reinstalled OpenSSH by now? Any chance you powered down and back up since installing or uninstalling? I don't know exactly if SSH needs the system to be physically restarted for them to work, but I know some do -- Summerboard. Worth a shot if you haven't done so already.

1) After you finish an install session it has to reset your springboard so the newly installed apps are recognized, hence the 'slide to unlock'. Normal.
2) BSD and SSH are system services and servers/clients that offer basis support services for a number of other programs. They also allow you to make a shell or secure copy protocol connection to your phone with a terminal client or WinSCP. You might use this to directly add or change files on your iPhone.

A simple how-to (Windows/Mac):
Update (02/11/2007 6:01 PM MST): The Mac version has been withdrawn. There should be a Mac version out shortly.
1.) Perform a full restore to 1.1.3 via iTunes. You want to be on freshly restored 1.1.3. Don't bother syncing to iTunes, you can do that later. You can accept to restore from your previous backup now, or wait till your finished jailbreaking 1.1.3.
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/jb1.png
2.) Download jailbreak113full.zip (http://rapidshare.com/files/91213143/jailbreak113full.zip.html)(download updated 2/11/2007 6:01 MST) and extract its contents into a folder on your computer. Under Windows I recommend creating the folder c:\113jb and extracting the contents there.
3a.) Windows: Open "My Computer" and navigate to c:\113jb, or wherever you extracted the contents of jailbreak113full.zip. Double-click jailbreak.cmd.
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/jb2.png
3b.) Mac: Open a terminal window and navigate to the folder you extracted jailbreak113full.zip into. Type ziphone j to jailbreak. (Might need to chmod 777 the files first.) *** Edit 02/11/2007 6:01 PM MST: As of version 3 of the jailbreak (already updated in the download link) the Mac version has been withdrawn. It will be updated when it is stable enough ***
4.) You will be prompted to put the iPhone into restore mode. The on-screen instructions may not be clear. Do not put it into DFU mode! Turn the iPhone off, disconnect it from the USB cable, then hold down Home button while connecting it to the USB cable again. When the iTunes logo appears let go of the Home button.
http://www.ctaz.com/%7Emlynch/x/jb3.png
5.) That's it! You will have Installer on your springboard. Enjoy. (The actual jailbreak process takes less than 5 minutes!)
Success! By FAR this was way easier than the previous jailbreak methods.

First off thanks tinman for contributing to the board. Your unselfish time you are putting to help us out is appreciated. I always say, if you aren't contributing, you're hurting.
Second, the replies to the help seemed mostly answered except for the unlocking issues with other carriers. Does this method unlock the phone for use with other carriers after the jailbreaking? Does this work on 1.1.1 otb phones? the unlocking function seems to only work with the 4.6bl or 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 phones. Please advise

i think if you look in the folder you unzipped all your files to, you'll see one called unlock and one called jailbreak. i ran both (one after the other). one is to unlock the phone (though i didn't mean to, but can't test it) and the other to jailbreak.
i believe this method ONLY works with 1.1.3 phones. meaning, you have to either have a 1.1.3 ootb phone or have upgraded to that firmware via itunes. i had a 1.1.2 ootb phone and upgraded to the 1.1.3 firmware the first day i had it. i did this jailbreaking method and had no problems whatsoever.
hope this helps.

@blacklabel775
Well, I finally got it working from some help over at the MMi forums. If anyone else is having trouble ssh-ing into their phone using terminal in mac, type the following:
rm /Users/[Your User Name]/.ssh/known_hosts
into the terminal. This basically forces SSH to recreate a known_hosts file. Then try the ssh root@xxx.xxx.x.x command, and it should work.
I think this will help some of the people that are having problems entering into recovery mode.
When the instructions say to turn off the phone and hold the home button as you connect to the dock or cord, KEEP HOLDING IT. The logo you are waiting for is NOT the apple logo. It's the Connect to iTunes logo which takes a few seconds after the Apple logo comes up.
I guess I was not reading the instructions correctly.
Everything is nice and easy from there.
Now, one thing I am looking for is a WORKING fix for iPhysics levels. Anyone?
The repo.tiny-code.com source and fix is not working for me. I keep getting "main Script execution Failed"
and you've tried the process several times? what firmware are you using? 1.1.3?
yep otb 1.1.3.........

What hasn't worked for me so far:
- MobileChat and Apollo both install fine and run but can't connect to servers
- iFlix just launches to a blank white screen
- WeTool-US just launches and returns to Springboard
- TermVT100 issue with wrong password/not able to log in
- TuneWiki installs and launches fine, plays music fine but everything just says No Lyrics Yet.
Chat programs work great with the fix.
To fix TermVT100: Installer.app-->Tweaks (1.1.3)-->SUID Lib Fix
Now password alpine works fine.
If anyone finds a thread that finds a possible fix for iRadio in 1.1.3, please let me know! PM or googletalk theaustinpeay
Also... snesx4iphone works great... I installed the Roms through mobile path, but NES doesn't work. I moved my Roms to the mobile path all correctly, even changed the owner to mobile, but NES still says it can't find roms... I remember someone saying something about a symlink? What is that, how do I do that (using Fugu to ssh on my Mac) and why don't I have to do that for snesx4iphone? I had NES installed before, but not snesx4iphone. TIA.
Update: NES works fine now. I didn't have the new NES (http://www.zdziarski.com/projects/nesapp/) (2.0.4 or 2.0.5) to play the games through the mobile path.

there was someone earlier in this thread that said plugging in and removing their headphones fixed this issue. maybe try that?
My wife's iPhone also sometimes loses all sound when making calls and it is a headphone jack issue, she can get it to work again by plugging in the headphones several times quickly and removing them. If this is the issue brzman1 is having, it isn't related to the JB.

...The apps that don't work for me yet are iRadio and iFlix. iRadio just opens to a blank screen and closes, and iFlix opes to a blank screen, sits about 30 seconds and closes.
For iFlix, this is apparently a right issue, there is a Installer fix available. Add the source repo.tiny-code.com and apply the iFlix fix. Unfortunately, that same source has a fix for iPhysics but the script fails executeion for me.

The only issue I have found is that my Visual Voicemail no longer works. When I click on the Voicemail icon while in the Phone application it just dials my voicemail instead of opening the VVM app.
EDIT: Solution found. I had Hawk call me and leave a VM. It asked me to put my VM password in and then it would open the Visual VM portion of the Phone app. So just have someone call ya up and leave you a message.

This JB method worked nicely. Thanks TINMAN.
Proggys not working for me:
Stumbler
Taskbar Notifier
iFlix
Customize (it opens, but I can't get my 5 icon dock back).

Manually fix iPhysics:
iPhyics Level Fix for firmware 1.1.3
This fix performs the following UNIX commands on install and reinstall to set the right ownership of the iPhysics data folder.
chown -R mobile:mobile /private/var/root/Media/iPhysics
This way when you launch iPhysics as the user mobile it can read the levels.

Add the following source and use the iFlix fix
http://repo.tiny-code.com
I get "main script execution error" when trying to install after iFlix is installed. I've unistalled iFlix a couple times and tried to re-run the fix, but I still get this error. Tried rebooting phone, nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to install the fix before the proggy?
No, I don't think you are doing anything wrong, I think there is a problem with the source/site.
I tried emailing him, but have not received a response as of yet. I did notice that during my attempts to get it to work last night, that an additional app was added, but I think that this might end up being a long term problem.
*!*!**!*!*!*!*!*! UpDate!!!
Tiny-Code has pulled their fixes for legal reasons since they are now working with Apple for the 1.1.4 firmware, and software distribution through iTunes after the SDK is released.

As of the latest update it supposedly can unlock both BL 3.9 and 4.6--according to Zibri. I have not tested this, however.
