Typically, you activate a cellphone in the store when you buy it. Whether you're an existing AT&T customer or a newbie, Apple wants you to activate iPhone and pick your wireless plan at home through iTunes, without having to wait in line.
There's a one-time $36 activation fee, and you must sign up for a two-year service agreement with AT&T.
A series of straightforward setup screens in iTunes walks you through the activation drill.
If you're an AT&T customer, you can replace a handset on your account with iPhone or add a line to an existing account. You can also transfer an existing mobile phone number from another wireless provider.
The process takes only a few minutes, after which you can sync the device with your music, videos, photos, TV shows, calendars, movies, e-mail accounts and Web-browser bookmarks.

I agree 36 is ridiculous. WE are the ones activating the phone so why are we paying an activation fee of 36 bucks? I am excited to be able to take the box home to open it and do my own activation. However i am considering it could be a PITA to activate through itunes when millions of other people are trying to do the same thing; on top of all the other people downloading music, movies, etc.

the activation always has been a normal procedure when activating a new 2yr agreement...if you're upgrdn, it would be $18...but at&t has a whole new policy now...they need to do more briefing of those policies...

I thought this was going to be a retraction for bad information posted from a "AT&T Rep" he talked to.

Activation fees are standard practice in this business, get used to it.
So were looking at this on Friday:
iphone- $599
activation- $36
subtotal- $635
tax (8.25%) $52.39
total $687.39
Roughly $700. Wow. Let me go watch that demo again. I have to keep watching it so that I can realize how cool the thing is and that it's worth it.

thata boy, roughly going to cost me close to 9 hun with $300 deposit
Oh and I forgot about the overdue balance of over $100 that is on the family plan that I'm on. I'm going to make sure that that is cleared before Friday. One time they wouldn't let me upgrade my phone until the balance was clear. So I'm looking at more like close to $800.

the activation fee usually is placed on the first months bill...so you praughly gonna have adjust this price...when you pay for the phone, you're doing just that, paying for the phone...

Yeah, you're right. So $648.52.
Activation fees aren't taxable, are they?
It's utterly pathetic that some people are complaining about $36.
