the iphone requires special headphones, and the only adapter available is the belkin? (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/review/belkin-headphone-adapter-for-iphone/) don't they make smaller adapters? isnt that too big to put in your pocket with the iphone already big enough?

It is a "REAL" headphone jack, its just recessed. Just make sure if you have aftermarket headphones that the jack end isn't very large.

ok i just went to apple.com and it says "3.5-mm stereo headphone minijack" so its 3.5mm like a real headphone jack but why does it say "minijack"

Thats what a 3.5mm headphone jack is called. Its nothing different, just recessed. So if the plastic around a headphone jack is to fat, it won't fully seat, thats all, nothing too extravagent here. The "adapter" that belkin sells is just 3.5mm , 3.5mm out, with the one end being skinny enough to fit. I have a headphone with a very normal sized jack oin the end, I'm interested to see if it fits without the adapter myself.

That's what I did, mine are very expensive, but it works perfectly. Hopefully they don't crap out on me for doing it tho :)
cut where? The plastic? I too was disappointed because I have some very expensive shures so ????

I just shaved the plastic around where it connects to the metal jack on the Shure's; just narrow it up enough to fit in the headphone jack on the iPhone. Works fine.

That's not bad at all actually. Just wish they litterally make just the piece at the end so you can stick on your headphones and forget about it. Heard Shure are making iPhone specific ones, so that's the next move.

I just went to the apple store for the first time today. Awesome! (I do not own any Mac's, but I own 6 Dells. Perhaps the next may be a mac.) At any rate, I just bought the Belkin adapter at the store for $9.95. It is large, but I'd rather not cut my expensive headphones. Works fine. Anyone know when they will make a fm transmitter the car for it? Just wondering.

I tried my Apple in ear headphones and they work fine, but I have to make sure I put them in carefully. I also trimmed my Monster splitter and now it works in my iPhone jack too. I took a really sharp knife and was REALLY careful. Then I got brave and trimmed my Shure headphones to fit in the recess; now they work fine too. Granted, they aren't as smooth looking around the connection, but you can't tell unless you look carefully. I am sure I can find some type of modeling putty that will dry to smooth it out if the appearance starts to bother me. I am really picky and it's not too bad I am sure if Shure comes out with headphones that are made to answer the iPhone I will upgrade, but I don't have to do it as quickly now. :)

Don't trim your expensive headphones bone up $10 and buy the belkin or buy a less expensive one off ebay (it's white and smaller for $8)

Ok, I have already given Apple so much money with the iphone plus a couple of different cases I bought along with it that I do not want to give them one more penny (for now) so I would rather not get the adapter.
The hard plastic earphones that came with the iphone hurt compared to my comfy, soft, expensive ones.
I got them for my ipod so I just didn't care and just got sharp scissors and trimmed the plastic. It works perfect!!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!:laugh2:

Go to Amazon and buy a Sport Case for the iPod Shuffle. It includes a tiny headphone adapter and I found the case for 98 cents from a vendor there.

I don't really like the belkin adapters as they look really dorky and put too much stress on the headphone port if they get bumped into.

There's tons of them on eBay for cheap too. Got mine for $.89 and $2.90 for shipping.

If you have a plastic ring around your headphone plug that's preventing the headphone from seating properly, just take an Xacto knife and trim it back. I did this with my Quiet Comfort 2 & 3 headphones and it worked perfectly.
Now no dorky two inch connector sticking out of the top of my iPhone...

I saw a video on engadget regarding Headphones for IPhone, If I can locate again I will post it. Anyways you can take the headphones that came with your IPhone dismantle the earbuds soilder off the wires and re soilder any earbuds of your choice.
I have never soildered before and accomplished this in about ten minuted its easy, and you get to keep all functions of click button on IPhone wires.

I bought that same adapter, looks better. but i also trimmed some of the plastic on other plugs i have (like car radio plug). Also, my old iPod headphones do not fit either.

The SuperFI 5 Pro's were also listed as not compatible. After I got them I used the airplane adaptor they came with but that still wasn't optimum. Radio Shack had nothing and then I took a closer look at the base of the plug.
There was plastic around the base beyond the curve and I took a very sharp knife and cut around it, probably removing a circular piece not even a millimeter wide.
It works just fine now and there's no concern about negative impact to the headphones which sound excellent with the iPhone.

Just did this, works great. Now I have nice inner-earbuds with the iPhone cord. I still have all the controls of the original earbuds, with better sound and earbuds for jogging!

A friend tod me that he didn't like their sound at all. Just looking for other opinions/ideas.

I got a wire type adapter, its about 3 inches long from www.radtech.com (http://www.radtech.com), works great and is easy to carry in my pocket as compared to the stiff belkin adapter that apple stores carry.

May I just humbly say that you people who hack your phones, add ringtones, change your earbuds on the originals, you guys just impress the heck out of me. I am not brave enough to do any of these things but I am totally impressed by some of you that come up with the "how to". My hats off to you guys. I am just not that brave or "techy" to try these things. But wow, I am amazed on what your guys can do. I am truly impressed and fascinated by reading some of this stuff.

Changing the earbuds was easy, hacking into the iphone is too risky IMO. Better to wait for updates and such.

I used the following ones from Philips - did it the day after I got my iPhone. I don't write howtos but was impressed to see others have done it too and posted videos and such on how to.

Does anyone know if headphone jacks can be replaced at an electronic store or by your neighborhood electrician? I tried to shave the black plastic awayh on my Sony headphones to make them fit the phone and I somehow messed up the steel on the plug and they won't work now in my laptop.
Does Radio Shack have plugs and can these plug wires be spliced and attached to new plugs and work fine?
Thanks!
