Okay, so there are several different guides and tutorials out there on jailbreaking 1.13. I threw some of them together, and ended up with this, a guide for jailbreaking 1.1.3 on the Mac.
Update: (2/12/08) There is now a much easier way (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/how-to-easily-jailbreak-1-1-3-with-the-full-jailbreak-windows-mac-22696.html) to jailbreak 1.13, without all of the complicated downgrading and updating. There is currently on a Windows method. If you have a Mac, you must still use this guide.
Prerequisites:
First download what you'll need:
iNdependence (http://independence.googlecode.com/files/iNdependence_v1.3.2_beta.dmg) (if using a Mac)
iBrickr (http://devices.natetrue.com/iphone/ibrickr-jb113.zip) (if using Windows)
Dev Team 1.12 Jailbreak Software (http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/1.1.2-jailbreak.zip)
Firmware 1.11 (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3883.20070927.In76t/iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw)
Firmware 1.12 (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4037.20071107.5Bghn/iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw)
Uncheck 'Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected' in iTunes.
In Settings > General > Auto Lock> ensure that 'Never' is selected.
You MUST be on a jailbroken version of firmware 1.12 before you jailbreak 1.13.
This method uses the Dev Team's version of the jailbreak, not Nate True's.

Downgrading from 1.13
If you are on an unjailbroken iPhone running firmware 1.13, you will need to downgrade first. To do so, follow these steps:
1) Dock the iPhone and sync the iPhone. Then put it in DFU mode by pressing and holding both the Power button and the Home Button. After 10 seconds, the iPhone's screen will go black; let go of the power button, and continue holding the home button until iTunes displays a pop up. Click OK.
2) Press Option + Restore if using Mac, Shift + Restore if using Windows. In the file browser that appears, locate the Firmware 1.11 (not 1.1.2) and click Open.
3) Allow the iPhone to Restore. When it is done, you should receive Error 1015. The iPhone's screen will not show the USB cord pointing towards the iTunes icon. Another pop will appear; click OK, then eject the iphone from iTunes (leave it in the dock) and quit iTunes.
4) Open iNdependence (Mac) or iBirckr (Windows) and wait for it to boot your iPhone from recovery.
5) Once the iPhone is booted, it should be at the 'Activate iPhone' screen. Slide for Emergency. Input *#307# on the keypad. Press call. Then the phone will ring. At the top of the screen, press the X and delete all of the characters you have entered. Now enter 0 and press call again. Then press answer, then hold, then decline.
6) You should now be at the phone's main keypad in the Phone application. Press the contacts button. Press the + in the top corner. Press the 'First Last' field. In the first name field, input A. Press Save. Now press the Add New URL button. Input prefs: then press Save. Press the Add New URL button again. This time, input http://jailbreakme.com and press Save. Press Save again.
7) Now press the prefs: button. This will take you to the Preferences Menu. Go to General > AutoLock > and press Never. Return to the main Settings Menu. Press Wi-Fi, and select your network, entering a password if necessary.
8) Press the Home button. You will be returned to the 'Activate iPhone' screen. Slide for Emergency. Enter 0, then press call, then answer, then hold, then decline, which will return you to the contacts screen. Press the A button. Press the http://jailbreakme.com button.
9) You are now on the jailbreakme site. Scroll to the bottom and press 'Install AppSnapp'. When Safari crashes, you will be returned to the 'Activate iPhone' screen. Wait for a few seconds until it freezes, and the phone reboots. When it has, Slide to Unlock, and you will have access to the SpringBoard with Installer on it.
Now Restore again to 1.11. When that is done, jailbreak again via jailbreakme.com.
Congratulations, you have successfully downgraded from 1.13.
__________________________________________________ ________
Upgrading to 1.12
You will now need to send your jailbroken 1.11 iPhone to 1.12.
1) You should now have a jailbroken 1.11 iPhone. Go into Installer and find OktoPrep. Install it.
2) Dock the iPhone and open iTunes. Click Option + Update (Mac) or Shift + Update (Windows) and navigate to the 1.12 firmware (not 1.11) and click Open. Wait for the process to complete. Eject the iPhone from iTunes when it is done, and then quit iTunes.
3) Now open the folder that contains the Dev Team's 1.12 jailbreak. Open 'jailbreak.jar' (Mac) or 'windows.bat' (Windows). If, for some reason, your iPhone is now in recovery mode, click 'Boot from Recovery'. When your iPhone is ready, click 'Jailbreak!' and wait for the process to complete. The phone will then reboot a few times.
__________________________________________________ ________
Jailbreaking 1.13
Now that you are a jailbroken iPhone running 1.12, you are ready to jailbreak 1.13.
The method you are going to use is the one provided by the Dev Team, not Nate True's. The first method for the Dev Team's was done via SSH, however you are going to di the whole thing via Installer.
Make sure that Auto Lock is set to NEVER and that you have Wi-Fi enabled.
Go into Installer and find Official 1.1.3 Upgrader, the source being Conceited Software. Install it and then let the phone respring. There will now be an app called Upgrade on your SpringBoard. Open it and say yes to Hacktivation (Even if you are with AT&T) and yes to the Restore. Then let the process run.
You're done!

Will this work on a 1.1.2 OTB?
Wondering the same... I have a jailbroken 1.1.2 OTB (also am an ATT customer, so no need to unlock), but I keep reading of issues those of us w/ 1.1.2 OTB are having w/ losing phone functions & such. I'd like to have full Maps functionality (i.e. native locate me & hybrid view), but I've read that updating to 1.1.3 baseband from a 1.1.2 OTB phone can cause a mess...there's so much inconsistent info out there, that I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger, and I'm a guy who has hacked Motos using hex editors & the whole 9 yards until only a couple years ago!!

This I do not know. I did it on an original iPhone bought in July.
I would hold if if you have a 1.12 OOTB. Wait until somebody confirms that one has been 1.13 jailbroken, if so, then this method will work.

Thanks John. I really don't care so much about jailbreaking as much as I do the ability to go back to 1.1.2 sometime if I want to.

Whenever I enter
"cd /usr/bin
restorebb "
In terminal I get
No Such Process

The first line you get should say No Such Process, but then it should take off.
Are you sure you installed Repair Baseband and 1.13 --> 1.02 Downgrader (in that order) first? If not, there's your problem.

Yes, I even turned it off uninstalled everything, and re-installed in that order. I will keep trying I guess. and I do not get "No Such Process".
Instead I get
zsh: no such file or directory:cd/usr/bin

How many people have successfully used this method?
Are all the references to 1.11, 1.12, and 1.13 actually 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3?
If i have a JB 1.1.1, which step do I have to begin at?
Thanks!

I was at my sister's house lastnight and she dropped her phone in the rain. The screen stopped working and we had to take it in. It was JB'd etc. Anyway, she got a new phone but its not JB'd obviously, and is 1.1.3 ootb.
First question is, I can downgrade that using DFU/recovery right?
Second, what if I don't want to downgrade the baseband? I'm going to be taking her phone back to 1.1.3, which should mean her google maps locate feature should work natively in that case. Can I skip that step or is it necessary for some reason?
I understand I won't be able to use the phone until its back on 1.1.3, but I'm not sure if the JB breaks that feature in lieu of 1.1.2 and 1.1.1 BBs.

Okay, I restarted the entire process all over and restored back to 1.1.1 and I am about to run the commands after this is done. I hope this fixes the problem.

You're talking about this DFU recovery (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/ibrickr-21805.html#post183098) thing, right? If so, yes. You should follow this tutorial on how to keep the 1.1.3 baseband when you downgrade:
http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?p=195983#post195983
I used this tutorial and it works great. Google Locator works natively and Hybrid view works too. Btw, I used Nate's JB instead of the Dev Team's. No issues so far at all.

I am having so much problems with this.
I followed all of the instructions..even resored 3x to 1.1.1 and Installed Oktoprep and I got up to 1.1.2 but then it said Oktoprep was gone so I went back down to 1.1.1 and tried it a 4th time and I got error 1602? so now I am restoring to 1.1.2 again hoping it works.

Well, the oddest of things just happened. I decided to look for some webclips to put on my springboard and started watching videos on dailymotion. Next thing I know, the screen started slowing down as I was tapping to zoom in to full screen.
Blammo, the screen went black. Stuck in a loop at the Apple screen and the Connect to iTunes picture. I fired up Independence and got my phone out of the loop, but for whatever reason that happened it didn't sit well with me. What if that happened away from my computer and when I was in an emergency situation? Bleh... I'm restoring to 1.1.3 and going back to jail right now. I reckon starting fresh, and having a 1.1.3 baseband is worth the extra effort to jailbreak this time around.
I'm going to use this tutorial up to the bit with downgrading the bb, I'm going to stay at 1.1.3 and report back on google map's find me feature working natively or not.
Update 11:55
Just got done installing 1.1.3, now I'm downgrading to 1.1.1 to turn my iPhone into an ipod Touch.
This is all so exciting! It's like gambling, except you know the odds are in your favor :)
Update 11:58
Just got my first 1.1.1 error. Restoring again to get it stuck in the connect to iTunes screen.
Update 12:05
Went through the bit where you get into the iphone by having it call itself. That was sweet, I felt like a hacker for a moment. Hello? Angelina?
Update 12:11
Oktoprep installed, updating to 1.1.2
Update 12:17
Ran Jailbreak.jar trying to boot from Recovery
Update 12:19
Jailbreak.jar wouldnt boot from Recovery, but Independence did. Ran Jailbreak.jar again and now its reading the flash image :)
Update 12:23
I think it finished JBing 1.1.2. I can't tell its at the Connect to iTunes screen rebooting. The JB said its going to do that a couple times before it gets things sorted. Gonna let it reboot a couple more times before I launch independence again to get it out of recovery.
Update 12:26
Independence saves the day again! In 1.1.2 prepping for 1.1.3 upgrade :D
Update 12:33
Installing BSD Subsystem 2.0 and updating Installer. I'm going to do the Installer soft update to 1.1.3 :)
Update 12:37
"Here we go. Running Install Script - have a sandwich" well I'm on my way to 1.1.3 :)
Update 1:01
iPhone just reboot, lets see where I end up, connect to itunes, or Springboard...
Update 1:03
Springboard just launched with the 1.1.3 homescreen update prompt. Installer is onscreen.
Checking Google Maps Find me. Locate Me or Navizon are not installed.
SUCCESS!! Google Maps works Natively :)
Now time to get my phone working like a phone again!
Update 1:09
OpenSSH is installed, time to move over that lockd file.
Update 1:15
Copied over the default lockdownd file, connecting to iTunes to get activated.
Update 1:16
Waiting for Activation. This may take a moment.
Activated.
1.1.3, Google Maps working natively, and back on the AT&T network.
I'm going to restore my files and call it a night.
Update 1:29
Just got done restoring my contacts and media while I read this post over. I realized I tried Find Me in Google Maps while on Wifi, which doesn't touch the baseband. I just tried it now with Wifi turned off and I'm happy to report it works. I've rebooted a few times since I last tried on Wifi so nothing was cached.

Yeah I don't know why the other methods weren't working for me. I forgot to mention that I had first tried to get out of recovery with Nate's new jailbreak, but no dice.
Additionally, after more testing, I believe I'm using the latest jailbreak which solved the sync issues. I noticed my Address book on my desktop had synced the contact I made with the web addresses prefs: and jailbreakme.com.
I have not really done anything post upgrade that was really necessary other than symlinking files to recover space.

I jailbroke the same way x666x did, retaining the 1.1.3 baseband. iTunes rentals STILL do not work, unfortunately. I get the same "cannot connect to iTunes" error at the end of the transfer.

Will do, my Raising Arizona expired before I could even watch it with the lady friend so I'll have to rent it again. 1 day really isn't enough, I don't know many "thirty somethings" that actually watch movie rentals the whole way through on their first night. I think the only movies I ever watch start to end are in the theatres.
I hope they work, but I can't do much other than cross my fingers. I know Nikita is broken on purpose right now, but what I don't know is how that ties into rentals aside from sdk apps. NerveGas said he had a secret he'd unveil around SDK time, I hope its not just a solution for Apps being installed through iTunes via the newly discovered encryption key -- which I have a hunch is the "secret method" he mentions on his blog.
So does that mean when SDK apps hit, Rentals will work again on activated phones? Not sure, we'll find out at least part of this riddle once I get home and try another rental.
Edit --
Thanks for saving me some time Enigmanic!
Sorry to hear the news, but we may get them back once the SDK is released and Nikita is once again enabled! /crosses fingers
Aside from that, you gotta admit, Find Me working natively as well as hybrid mode (I'm told this doesn't work for some on 1.1.2 bbs) is better than being 0 for 3. I mean I sure as heck didn't go through all this just for jiggly buttons!

I think the instructions could use a little tweaking. I did things a tad differently which I think help speed up the process. I logged all my actions in a post further up, total process was a little under 2 hours.
I used the soft update through installer as my final step, which I think is a pretty nice way to wind down after all the docking/syncing/idependence-ing that takes place prior to getting back on to 1.1.3.

Omg... sounds like a total pain in the ass. Can't they come up with an easier solution for jailbreaking? Like a prog that does it all for you. I've never jailbroken before, I've had the phone since day 1 and I just never upgraded my firmware. I had app.tapp/installer.app up until a week ago then I upgraded to 1.1.3 to check it out. I want my 3rd party stuff back now though. Is this the only way to installer.app or will it become any easier in the upcoming weeks?

There will most likely be an easier version out. But in all honesty, this isn't all that hard. A 12 year old did it. No joke.

The 12 year old is currently enrolled at Harvard and has been asked to teach at MIT once he graduates at 15.
Just kidding.
Really, its not that difficult, it just seems daunting because its something new.
I'm going to JB my sisters OOTB 1.1.3 iphone tonight when she comes over. I'm going to snap some shots of a few of the error messages and post them, I think it helps to see them so you're not worried you did something wrong.

It says "Extracting" in iTunes and then give me an error (error code 1, not the good error im looking for) and doesnt restore the iPhone. Where did you download it from? Did you download it on a mac or pc? On my mac i had to tell safari to download the file as a zip first. It kept unpacking the file to just a folder. It would unzip it automatically, then unzip the ipsw, lol.
Once I told it to save as a Zip, i just removed the .zip and left the .ipsw.
I don't know if thats your problem, but I definitely remember running into that problem last night.
I would retry downloading the firmware. It sounds like nothing has been applied to your iphone yet, so you're still in the clear. Make sure the file has the ipsw extension, and that it has an icon when you view it.
Edit -
With the exception of the 1.1.2 Jailbreak and 1.1.3 Jailbreak, I used everything from John's tutorial.

OK, i have tried this method now 6 times, and everytime a new error comes up, my the one i seem to be stuck on now is the running of the dev team software jailbreak.jar. when i run the program everything goes smooth, but then when it finishes it puts my iphone into recovery or dfu mode and it dosent take it out, the program says it will restart my phone several times before it completes, but after an hour of waiting, and no restart, i assume its not working.
any sugguestions??
any help would be greatly appreciated, my aim sn is paintdude257 or feel free to pm me.

Assuming that itunes 7.6 is the current version then yes, my itunes is current. I have downloaded the ipsw again (well...its got a minute left on it)
EDIT - wow...i think apple shut down their site...my download just stopped and i cant get back to it to download it again...lame
If you don't have it when I get back, I'll send you a private link to the files I used.
I just tried to download the files again, and they are working fine for me.
This begs the question, is your internet connection okay? If you're on a wireless rig I highly recommend keeping your iPhone away from it. It causes some really nasty interference with my wifi router and pc next to it. My connection drops every time it pings edge to look for email :( (i leave my wifi off sometimes when i get home from work by mistake)

Read my Log post farther up. You'll see I run into the same problem of an infinite loop after the Dev team JB for 1.1.2. I had to soft reset it and then let Independence "wake it up" from recovery mode. In every instance that the iPhone needs to be taken out of recovery mode, replace the older and now depricated method with either Independence on mac, or iBrickr special edition on PC. Those will do the trick or at least give you an error log why it didnt work.
Update 12:17
Ran Jailbreak.jar trying to boot from Recovery
Update 12:19
Jailbreak.jar wouldnt boot from Recovery, but Independence did. Ran Jailbreak.jar again and now its reading the flash image
In 1.1.2 prepping for 1.1.3 upgrade

Ok this is the third time ive donloaded the ipsw files...i get the feeling it just isnt gonna work for me...im going to try restarting my computer...i dunno what else to do
EDIT - I quit...i keep getting an error and the restore fails miserably so i just give up
EDIT 2 - I couldnt even get Nate's iPhuc/WTF method to work, in which you use iphuc to put the phone in recovery mode and force the WTF file over before doing the restore
EDIT 3 - AHA! i forgot i have a week 51 iPhone because they had to recently replace mine since the speaker stopped working!!! this might be why im having a problem huh? Wrong bootloader maybe??

What error is iTunes giving you exactly? It would help us understand what the problem is.
Also, can you use the phone normally? I.E. as a phone, like make calls? If not, you haven't done the Lockdownd step.

I'm not an unlocker, I have no need to get my baseband back to 1.1.2 for AnySim etc. If you are the same, than that means you can JB any iPhone without having to flash the baseband and revirginize it.
I have heard you cannot revirginize certain basebands, however I have no experience in the matter so I really have nothing to offer if thats your case.
If you're just looking to JB 1.1.3 then what week your iPhone is doesn't matter.

Well neither of the two methods worked..it just doesnt want anything to do with 1.1.1....i have tried downloading the firmware many times so i know its not that...unless im not putting it into recovery mode properly or something...but i highly doubt that too since i tried three different ways (plugging it in and doing the sleep/home button, turning it off and holding the home button and plugging it in, and forcing it into recovery with iPHUC) so i dunno what the problem is...i dont need to unlock it...i just want it jailbroken so i can run installer.app...thats all i care about
EDIT - x666x, if you can pm me the links to the files you used it would be greatly appreciated. Every time i try to restore from the firmware it gives me error 1 "the iphone 'iphone' cannot be restored because of an unknown failure"

To keep things from getting convoluted I've posted an alternate 1.1.3 JB tutorial which I also used when I JB'd mine recently. It was written for PC which I ended up doing on a Mac anyway, lol. I just edited it for Mac.

What baseline will you be running at the end of the JB 04.03.13_G or 04.02.13_G?
Okay, so there are several different guides and tutorials out there on jailbreaking 1.13. I threw some of them together, and ended up with this, a guide for jailbreaking 1.1.3 on the Mac.
Prerequisites:
First download what you'll need:
iNdependence (http://independence.googlecode.com/files/iNdependence_v1.3.2_beta.dmg)(if using a Mac)
iBrickr (http://devices.natetrue.com/iphone/ibrickr-jb113.zip) (if using Windows)
Dev Team 1.12 Jailbreak Software (http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/1.1.2-jailbreak.zip)
Firmware 1.11 (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3883.20070927.In76t/iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw)
Firmware 1.12 (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4037.20071107.5Bghn/iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw)
The Dev Team's 1.13 Jailbreak Software (http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?p=163549)

Wait for a few seconds until it freezes,a nd the phone reboots. When it has, Slide to Unlock, and you will have access to the SpringBoard with Installer on it.
10) Now we fix the baseband. Launch Installer and install or update Community Sources. Install BSD Subsystem. When that is done, install Term-vt100. Now press the Sources icon. Press Edit, then Add. Input hackthatphone.com/1.xml , press OK, then let the Sources Refresh, then press Done. Press Refresh. Hack that phone tools should now be in your Sources list.
11) Press the Install icon. Scroll down to the Hack that phone tools folder and press it. Inside, find the program called Repair Baseband and install it. Then go back the Sources pane, and add sleepers.net/iphonerepo to your sources list.
12) Press the Install icon. Find the Unlock that iPhone folder, and install 1.1.3 --> 1.0.2 Downgrader. NOTE: You are not unlocking your phone, this is just the name of the folder.
13) Open Term-vt100 on the iPhone. Enter the following:
cd /usr/bin
restorebb
The terminal will now display several lines of code, and should finish in about 3 minutes. When the bottom line in the Terminal is Done, the process in complete.
14) Now, open the Terminal again, and input the following:
cd /usr/bin
virginize
Wait for the process to complete. It should take about as long as the previous process.
15) Put the iPhone into DFU mode again. Option + Restore (Mac) or Shift + Restore (Windows) in iTunes, and restore to 1.1.1 again. After that, jailbreak again via jailbreakme.com.
Congratulations, you have successfully downgraded from 1.13.
__________________________________________________ ________
Upgrading to 1.12
You will now need to send your jailbroken 1.11 iPhone to 1.12.
1) After you Restored to 1.11 again, you should have jailbroken. Now go into Installer and find OktoPrep.

Are you on a Mac or PC? It's kinda easier on a PC because you can hear tones when XP detects USB activity.
There are 2 ways basically, I used the first method:
1) Hold the Power and Home button while your iPhone is Docked, and then slide the red slider to power off. Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button and tap it again to turn the phone on. Continue holding the Home button. iTunes will detect a phone in recovery mode.
2) Power the phone down. Press and hold the Home button and place it into the dock holding down the home button, and continue to hold it until the phone boots up and iTunes detects a phone in recovery mode.

Mess around with DFU mode. It took me awhile to find the way that worked for me; you should get after a while of butting pressing and chirping.

If I'm already on a JB 1.1.2, is this the only step I need to do? Or do I have to first upgrade to 1.1.3, then do the downgrade steps because of the new file system?
Also, is there a list of which 3rd party apps still work with this JB upgrade? I'm primarily concerned about still having Lockbox.
Thanks.

Make sure the iPhone is activated. Connect to iTunes and see if you are asked to restore from a backup. If so,f ind your backup and use it. Also try to connect to iNdependence (Mac) or iBrickr (Windows) and see if that solves the issue.

Hmm. Have you eve unlocked your phone, or was it when you did this jailbreak? If so, there's your problem. I've never messed around with the unlocking/activation stuff, so I'm not sure. Anybody else have answers?

If you're desperate, then Restore. Restoring will put you on a stock 1.13 iPhone. If you want, you can re-try the jailbreak after you Restore, or you can stay un-jailbroken.

Yes, it will most likely re-activate your iPhone. Before you Restore, try to make a call on the iPhone. If you succeed, leave it alone; the phone is activated.

ok, I'm back to square 1 on apples 1.1.3. And totally kicking myself for deleting that back up. So I'm gonna try it again, but I have 2 questions:
1. If I system restore on my of to before I jailbroke, will the back up be back?
2. Should I make a backup before jailbreaking while it shows my activated phone, so of it shows no phone like before, I can just backup?
Thank you john so much for all of this. It was sooo nice to see that installer icon again( even if it wasn't for long)

Just let the iPhone sync with iTunes. It automatically creates the backup when the iPhone is synced.

They both are very similar. There's basically one process, it's just they way we put it together.
I haven't tried x666x's method. I wrote my method as I did it, so it works. Just go with which ever one you prefer to go with it.

ok, so i tried it again this morning, making sure there was a backup with phone number included. everytime i have followed this process, there were little things that happened. it kept showing, "incorrect sim card", everytime i downgrade to 1.1.1, and then go to ibrickr, it would show up green, so i would have to do 1.1.1 again, to make it show up red. this time i made sure that it wouldnt sync until the end. is there another process under "upgrade" after "writing image"? i went to restore backup(which listed my phone #) it syncd, and then syncd again.. and now, no phone, no nothing... I AM SOOOOOO CLOOOOOSE! somethings gotta give!!!! help me obi wan kenobi, your my only hope.

I don't know. I think that you should wait for a more simple version of the jailbreak to come out, as it seems you just aren't having luck with this one. It is difficult and tedious. Give it a few more tries if you want to, but I think you should hold tight.

- John
John: This step in restoring 1.1.1 says the screen will "not" show the USB cord pointing towards teh iTunes icon. Is this correct? Or, should it say the screen will "now" show the USB cord....?
I've tried the restore several times and it always shows the USB cord pointing towards the iTunes icon.
EDIT: UPDATE: I proceeded and it was going ok until step 12. After adding the sleeper.net/iphonerepo source, I don't get what step 12 says I should have "Unlock that iPhone folder". When I look at sleeper.net/iphonerepo via a browser, it says it's an old link. Is there some missing updated info on this?
Thanks.

Moding these iPhones has got to be the hardest thing ever done we have been spending 3 days trying to jailbreak 2 1.3 iPhones. But I love when you modders go very simple LOL
Seriously my girlfriend jailbroke her phone when it was 1.1 no problem. When some of her mods needed to be 1.3 she upgraded and spent 2 days trying to break her 1.3 iPhone finally got it to take. Now she's spent most of today trying to break mine.

When you're at this terminal section:
cd /usr/bin
restorebb
You need to be sure you have a space between cd and /usr/bin - then hit enter after that command
Then enter the restorebb command on your new command line

I now have a new problem. I can no longer get my phone into the DFU restore mode. I hold both buttons, the screen goes blank, I release the power button, then nothing. No beeps, or anything. It simply turns off. iTunes shows no indication of being in restore mode. If I hold the power button again, it turns on and boots really slow, but to a function 1.1.3.
Has anyone else experienced this after trying to JB a lot of times? What can I try?
Thanks.

To be frank that step should not be there (well, steps 11 through 14). There is no need to downgrade the baseband and in fact if you do you give up Google Maps locate feature. Why go through more work to get less features, and have yet another point-of-failure?
I only jb 1.1.3 with bb 4.03.03 now.

Hey I just tried to do this a couple times and I always run into error 1 when trying to restore to version 1.1.1. It always says there is an unexpected error, I keep having the cord connecting towards the itunes sign, and I just have to restore it in itunes to a new 1.1.3 or just use ibrickr to get back to how it was before i started. Am I using the wrong 1.1.1 file? Or what?

When you restore 1.1.1, you'll get the error, restore 1.1.1 again. You will still get the error, then continue with the next step in the tutorial. Some tutorials say to do the second restore, some don't. But I believe most say to continue even though you get the error.

I know, but apparently im getting the wrong error or something because when I use ibrickr to get out of recovery mode, its jsut back where i started, not at the activation screen.

When I try to upgrade my 1.1.1 jailbroken iphone to 1.1.2, it rejects..
After that point^.. the update does not go through, and then i have to RESTORE my iphone to 1.1.3, and follow the WHOLE downgrade process again.. :(((((

ok ive read through this entire post and am slightly confused. i think my iphone is a 1.1.2 OTB, ive no idea what OTB stands for but i bought it in the december so i believe that is the time period for that. It is jailbroken too and i did that as soon as i bought it. i want to upgrade it to 1.1.3 but i still want it jailbroken. i saw in the installer program that there is the "official 1.1.3-3 upgrader" do i need to do anything besides just download that program and run it? does it work? are there known bugs with it? also i dont want to loose all my contacts, that would be a living hell to type them all back in.
