i hope this downgrading stuff doesn't become a crutch for the hackers.
i mean i don't want to have to downgrade to 1.1.1 and sequentially upgrade to 13.8.9 when it comes out.

It was the only way for me to jailbreak again...thats the breaks.

yeah i know. my point is that the hackers are spending their time using the downgrades to hack instead of looking for ways to hack the current software directly. granted, we get our phones JB-en quicker... but like i said, if i have to do all that to upgrade to 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 and x.x.x, then i probably won't mess with it in the future.

Real quick way to tell if SSH is still installed / working is to just install the Services app. If it shows SSH there and lets you toggle it on/off, who needs a Springboard icon ...

Okay got it, so it shows up in the services, and shows that it is on so I just turned it off.

Cool. Yeah, I always just use Services to keep that toggled off except when I want to do a bit of file transfer etc. And Services seems to be running just fine on 1.1.3

Good question, I haven't tried out Summerboard or themes yet, though have seen some saying it works but with a few glitches - I'm kinda hoping there will be a new version release of it fairly soon ...

The whole downgrading process is a real chore for something that only half works at this point. I know there are a lot of bandaids out to patch the holes, but in the end, do you feel its been worth it?
I haven't really heard anyone touch upon that aspect of all this JBing, so I'm interested to know. I mean if I saw more "It was totally worth the effort" posts compared to "It went without a hitch but X or Y doesn't work" I think I'd be more inclined to jump onboard with yall.
The wait is keeling me

It's been totally worth it. And that's coming from someone who (through my own laziness, my bad) did it the 'not ideal' way (going from 1.1.1 JBed to Nate's method) and did have a lot of issues via that method. But, once I did it from 1.1.2 JBed, it has been well worth it, and almost no issues - the Google Maps Find Me thing needs the Locate Me workaround is about all. Every single 3P app I've tried works sweet and I like 113 quite a bit ...

Thanks for posting, thats definitely good to know. I had read that there seemed to be more things that can go awry if you went from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3, as you've probably already experienced. I'm on 1.1.2 so I don't think I'll run into too much trouble, I hope, heh.
I'll have to look over the "working apps list" for 1.1.3 to see if all my favs are working, but from what I hear it sounds like theres only a few that don't. Argh, I'm tired of waiting for NervGas' JB and I've got a few hours free tonight to game out or jailbreak...

As luck would have it, NerveGas' JB was released and I decided to give that one a go. Worked on the first go without a hitch :)
Finally enjoying 1.1.3, but interestingly the first thing I tried out wasn't any of the new features, but getting my beloved PocketGuitar back on!

Ok I have 1.1.3 JB now but it went, to say the least, not as planned.
On my phone I went to installer and and tried adding the 1.1.3
It started and froze mid way like it should have.
Then my phone crashed.
It said connect to itunes.
Itunes didn't recognize it.
I booted it thru iBrickr.
Phone turns on (1.1.2)
Phone soft resets to version 1.1.3
???
But it is working now and I'm fine with that.

I downgraded from 1.1.3 all the way through a jailbroken 1.1.2, then i did the jailbreak to get to a jailbroken 1.1.3, but none of my contacts or settings were there because i had to set it up as a new phone while i was downgrading. So if you have a OTB 1.1.2 phone with BL 4.6, that is already jailbroken, this process will not work?
Or must it be downgraded to 1.1.1 and the whole jailbreak process done again.
KNK, I am not sure where you started in the process. Did you have a jailbroken phone or did you start from 1.1.3 and had to downgrade to rejailbreak?
So if you have a OTB 1.1.2 phone with BL 4.6, that is already jailbroken, this process will not work?
Or must it be downgraded to 1.1.1 and the whole jailbreak process done again.

I started with a restored phone at 1.1.3 and then went back to 1.1.1 and up.
If your original phone is 1.1.2 obt and you are jailbroken now you can soft upgrade to 1.1.3 JB. Once there you can not go back.
I dont use any address books, i only had my contacts entered into my iphone, so is there any other way i can get my contacts back?
Your contacts are wiped out, tough lesson for not syncing to an address book.:gasp:
I started with a locked unjailbroken 1.1.3 phone. I followed all the downgrade instructions. I successfully got 1.1.1 working. I got as far as upgrading to 1.1.2, and itunes said unable to restore iphone error#1609. I tried to go back to 1.1.1, and got the same message.
I even tried restore and update and got the same message. What do i do now?
That error means your restore .ipsw is bad or corrupted. Delete them and download new ones and make sure ti change the zip file extension to the correct name.
Restore your phone and start again.
Also make sure when you are at the 1.1.2 step 21 make sure you hit Shift-click UPDATE and not restore, that was your problem.

As you know I said I would wait a few days before jailbreaking the 1.1.3 so I waited until last night. I used this howto which was excellant. (http://planet-iphones.com/forums/index.php?topic=663.0) I originally saw it on MMI but that place is either so slow or is down, so I found the same poster "Sidetalker" at the site ref there.
I started with a restored phone at 1.1.3 I clicked off all my music, movies etc, till there was nothing on the phone but about 211 mb of other. So it is important to go back to 1.1.1 then to 1.1.2 jailbroken because it prepares the phone for the soft update to 1.1.3. I used this howto for the nates (http://planet-iphones.com/forums/index.php?topic=663.0)update which was better than his.
The downgrade to 1.1.1 then to 1.1.2 took me 70 minutes this morning without a hic cup. (Just a NOTE I only had 21mb of Other at this point)
The soft update took about 30 minutes of mostly waiting and great sucess:gasp::2cool:
After I got back to 1.1.3 my contacts were there and I had to enter all my password settings etc. I synced back my music etc. All plays well, all sounds well, my custom ringtones work and sound we.
When I jailbroke at 1.1.2 I had my Installer icon, the BSB icon and SSH, but after the 1.1.3 the Installer was there updated to 3.0 but the BSB & SSH were gone. I installed the SSH but it does not show on my springboard??
My locate button works great in maps with Tinman's work-a-round.
I don't know if there is a work-a-round for the summerboard etc yet?
That is about it, if you needs help using my methods above then post them here.
i dont have no phone reception i lost it when i did the downgrade how do i get it back

It should have been activated at 1.1.2 I don't understand why you need winscp to activate.
You need to add the BSD Baseband and the open SSH and services to maintain that. I do not know what all you have done.

For the record, if you upgrade your phone through iTunes to 1.1.3, it flashes your baseband to new settings. These new settings are not compatible with 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, and as a result, you will receive a SIM warning from the phone, and not have connectivity to your network until the OS software has gone back up to 1.1.3.
I have read that there are ways to revirginize your baseband, however it requires that your iPhone fall within certain manufacturing specs that I'm unaware of at the moment.
John's thread on Jailbreaking on Mac has a section about the baseband and downgrading it. You may want to check it out if this is your problem and you wish to stay on 1.1.2.
If this is not your problem, then you need to place a stock Lockdownd file back on your phone, this is from another thread:
13. Transfer lockdownd chmod 777
• Install WinSCP to your PC and launch it. Or CyberDuck on Mac.
• Go into your settings app on your phone and find out your phones IP address.
• For Mac Users, in CyberDuck press the Bookmarks button, followed by the + button to add a new bookmark. Name the Bookmark, for Protocol select SFTP (SSH) from the pulldown menu. Enter your iPhone's IP for the Server, set username to root, and use alpine as the password when prompted.
• For PC Users, in WinSCP click on NEW, type in your phones IP in the Hostname box, username is root, password is alpine. You can then click on the advanced options and connections and set the timeout to 60 seconds. Click Save. Click Login.
• After about 30-45 seconds or so you'll be prompted with a message, just hit OK. You should now be looking at your phones file system.
• For PC Users, in WinSCP, on the left side, navigate to the directory where you downloaded the lockdownd file. On the right side of the window, navigate to /usr/libexec.
• For Mac Users, browse to /usr/libexec in CyberDuck, in Finder browse to where you saved the lockdownd file
• Rename the phone version of lockdownd to lockdownd_old. Drag your new lockdownd file into this directory.
• Right click on the new file you just transfered over to your phone (right side window), goto properties (Get Info on Mac) and set the permissions to 0777, or just click all the check boxes in the first, second, and third columns. Hit OK, and then verify this just incase.
• Disconnect your phone, close iTunes, Reboot your phone.
• Open iTunes and then connect your phone. iTunes should instantly activate your phone.
