I updated fine with a MBP from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3. Everything is working fine. Apps went away but installer stayed and the apps were still there but I had to uninstall all of them. That is why people have so much other. Uninstall all your apps before you upgrade including BSD subsystems and Open SSH. Leave nothing but installer.

In fact its a good idea to downgrade to 1.1.1 then upgrade to 1.1.3 with a fresh jailbreak.

I have an OTB 1.1.2

Jailbroke to 1.1.3, but there is no point - i restored abck to 1.1.1 and jailbroke 1.1.2 again.

I see no point in having 1.1.3 if the google locate me doesnt work, my 1.1.2 jailbroken does more than 1.1.3 jailbroken

Process went smooth, but could not get any sound when the phone was "ringing".
Tried everything I could think of. restoring now.

The Locate Me feature doesn't work because the baseband needs to be upgraded in order to do so. This Jailbreak is just a software update, it doesn't affect the baseband, and therefore Googlemaps doesn't work properly.

To get the Maps working you need to upgrade to 1.1.3, then downgrade turning your iphone into an itouch for a little while because the 1.1.3 baseband doesn't work on the 1.1.2 software :P

After that, Jailbreak 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 (whatever you downgraded to) then upgrade back up to 1.1.3 using Nate's jailbreak. You'll now have a JB'd OS and a BB that works with Locate Me.

I don't know if Unlockers can do the BaseBand upgrade because doing so locks them back onto the ATT network :(

Yeah, all my ringtones are silent and no pinpointing from Google maps. Probably should have waited. I was really looking forward to the pinpointing feature.

Also, iTunes store has problems previewing songs.

And this is a big one ... iPod music is silent too. Videos are okay though.

YouTube seems alright.

Ugh.

Hmmm, I have the same issue with the iPod app - all songs will not play, some won't even respond to the Play button (i.e. it does not change to a Pause button), others appear to be playing, but no sound. Sound works on YouTube vids and even Podcasts via the iPod app.
Locate me just spins forever right now (it used to work on 113 pre-jailbreak).
Just about all apps I've tried work - Services, SysInfo, Screenshot, iBlackjack, Chess, Caissa, iSpit etc.

I took the plunge and jailbroke 1.1.3. At first, everything seemed fine. Installed several apps -- BSD, SSH, etc. However, after a few mins of playing with the phone, it suddenly froze up. I did a hard reboot, but it became stuck at the Apple logo. No matter many times I rebooted, it remained stuck. Ended up restoring to a fresh copy of 1.1.3. I'll either downgrade and try again tomorrow, or just wait until there's a more stable way of jailbreaking.

Aw man, I feel for you guys. It's no fun being the guinea pig when things go sour. Thanks for trying it out for everyone though. I'm sure some will consider the disadvantages worth it!

Update here with no apparent issues. Well, there was an apparent issue while installing "1.1.3 soft upgrade." It ran for about 45 minutes and I noticed the iPhone's clock had stopped 20 minutes or so prior. So at the one hour mark I forced the iPhone off, thinking it was toast. But if fired back up to my passcode entry box and all was fine.

Google Maps locate function works (and that is without updating the BB). So do Mobile Finder, Term-vt100, FiveDice, iBlackjack... things are looking good!

Hey, 999, good to see you again.

As for Google Maps I got its locate feature to work on my non-BB updated iPhone (BB 04.02.13_G).

This seemed to get the locate function to work:
1.) Install LocateMe via Installer (might have to uninstall first, if it was previously installed before jailbreaking 1.1.3).

2.) Run LocateMe and have it locate you in Google Maps.

3.) While still in Maps tap the locate icon.

Update:
OpenSSH works--most everything I've tried so far works. Haven't bothered with Customize since I only used it to rearrange the springboard. Don't need it for that anymore.

Regarding Google Maps locate function for 04.02.13 BB I have found that while LocateMe (or Navizon) cause it to work it will stop again after a full restart. Ditto for turning Airplane Mode on, then off. This is fixed again by running LocateMe/Navizon.

Excellent find Mike!

Question, do you think they'll release a soft patch to fix this issue like they've already done for the Null email password error and such? (I think there are 2 soft patches floating on Installer so far)

I suppose so, though it's hard to say since I'm not sure how LocateMe "nudges" Google Maps into action.

Which is the null password error - the issues with Gmail password not sticking? The only patch I see right now is an 'OpenSSH Fix' - are you seeing others?

Nevermind - after adding sleepers.net source, now see a Mail Fix patch - anyone know if there is a 'sounds / iPod' fix in the works anywhere, for those of us who have all ringtones silent and Ipod playing podcasts OK, but songs / music no-go?

1. I have locate me working per the workaround listed.
2. Trying to transfer a rented movie. Didn't go through the first time because it said I wasn't connected to the internet, but I was. Tried again. Same thing. Anybody have success with rented movies?
3. Sync Je does not appear to work. Gives me a message stating something like "alert could not be executed." Tried uninstalling the plist associated with it and all folders so I had a clean install, but no dice.
4. Most games etc. appear to work. For those that haven't seen it, there's a new version of NES for 1.1.3 on the developer's site (zdiarski or something).
5. Now I have questions. When trying to uninstall (meaning those apps in root, but not appearing on the springboard), customize, extended preferences, HP calc etc., I get the main execution error message. Anybody know a way around it? And if the apps are on there but not in the new directory structure, does it hurt anything, other than the space it takes up?

EDIT - Found the answer to number 5 in the other thread. Thanks tm.

For anyone having the 'Mail password won't stick' sort of issue, where you set the Gmail (or other mail providers possibly) password under Mail > Settings and as soon as you back out of Settings it is not retained (and hence mail is buggered) - the 1.1.3 Mailfix from the Big Boss source (In the Tweaks 1.1.3 section) has fixed that for me this morning - password stays and Gmail plays nice ...

Number of people were getting it I think - Gmail password just refused to stick as soon as you backed out of Settings

My experience on 3rd party apps is (like yours) very good so far - all I've tried have worked - iRadio a little flaky in response and SyncJe works but doesn't like syncing much so far.

One other odd (not broken) thing I've noticed is if I turn off WiFi, Edge works and I can browse etc., but i no longer see the ugly and demoralizing little 'E' symbol next to the carrier name - kinda miss the little bugger now.

Still have not seen anyone talk about a silent ringtones / iTunes music fix yet, and several are reporting it at Macrumors forums as well. I am assuming / hoping a fix for this will also emerge as I really don't fancy having to mess with downgrading again and running through Nate's process again ...

I want to do the same thing. I bought a 1.1.2 OTB,jailbroke that which was great, then yesterday I went to 1.1.3, now I have no summerboard, no dock, and worst of all, when I try to open SMS, it just goes back to homescreen. So now I wanna go back to 1.1.2. I still have the 1.1.1 file saved from the original jailbreak, but how do I get back to 1.1.2? Please help! I am fieeeending here!

I think there are fixes out for the missing EDGE indicator (though oddly enough I don't have that issue either).

My ringtones seem to work. They seem louder but that's probably due to the speaker surgery.

Gonna try a movie rental next...

Glad yours went so smooth, not bitter and envious about that at all, much
One difference (I think) between us is that both my efforts at the 113 jailbreak (original and after downgrade process last night) started at 1.1.1 jailbroken at the outset of Nate's process. I think you were probably 1.1.2 jailbroken. I also got some script errors at the end of 1.1.3 Soft Upgrade routine, which I ignored pretty much because the phone still booted into 113 jailbroken.

I'll try one of the Edge prefs fixes in a while probably.

You reckon it's a good bet someone will fix the ringtones / sounds issue?

I would imagine so.

OTOH, you are correct that I was running 1.1.2 before I ran iBrickr. I don't think I'd be comfortable going from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3, at least not via iBrickr. I have a hunch 1.1.1 is the common denominator for 1.1.3 jailbreak issues.

I just finished jailbreak my iPhone.
I bought mine on launching day, and I had problem before 1.1.3 jailbreak method released but after 1.1.3 firmware came out.
Therefore, I had to restore my iphone and I had 1.1.3 iphone.

I did downgrade to 1.1.2 which you can find the instruction here.
http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25695

And follow 1.1.3 jailbreak instruction.
Everything goes fine and I finally got the jailbroken 1.1.3 iphone.

For me..
Ringtone thing is not happen.
I can get a call with exact same ringtone that I select on the contact menu.
So no problem with ringtone for me.

Locate Me on Google Map is not working.
However, I prefer to use Navizon which you can install from Installer.
Because, I think Navizon is more accurate for me.
It could be different depends on the location.

And~!!!!
I have another problem.
I read every post on this thread, but I couldn't see the same problem like me.
The problem is Visual Voice Mail.
It keep asking me the password.
I put the right password but it is saying incorrect.
So, I changed the password but it still says wrong.
Any body has same problem?

Ah! One more thing.
The Gmail setting does not save the password either.
I tried the setting on the "gmail" menu directly and "other" menu, too.
However, Both are does not save the password.

Any body has solution for these two problems?

Sorry, Visual Voice Mail is working now..
I probably had the wrong password.
Sorry again.

But Gmail setting is still not save the password

I had the Gmail issue and the 1.1.3 Mailfix resolved it for me. To get this, add the Big Boss Installer source if you don't already have it - go to Sources tab, hit Edit, hit Add, type in (after http://) (http://%29)sleepers.net/iphonerepo (http://sleepers.net/iphonerepo)
Once you add that source, you should see the 1.1.3 Mailfix under the Tweaks (1.1.3) category ...

Yeah, I have a feeling 1.1.1 may be the thing too. I thought about that last night when I had done the downgrade, and thought about upgrading to 1.1.2 before going back to Nate's process, and then laziness won the day and I just barged ahead :frown:

One thing I have noticed is that there are now two preference folders in /var:
Preferences
preferences

The one capitalized has modified dates as of the time I jailbroke, yesterday. The other folder seems to be the preferences folder actually in use (it's been updated today).

Within each of those folders there is a folder named SystemConfiguration. But in "Preferences" this folder is symlinked to /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration. Ditto for the file csidata.

Can anyone else check to see if they have those two folders? (You can check via SSH, iBrickr .91, or via Mobile Finder.)

I suspect "Preferences" was supposed to be named "preferences" and since it was not a new folder was created instead. Ergo the preferences in var/root/Library aren't in place.

Ideas?

Another thing... Nervegas posted this about Nate's JB release:

"Actually he's got a donations page up and is making some money on it. He also wanted the fame, like GeoHot, of being the first to post. Unfortunately, for his users, his jailbreak is incomplete and a lot of stuff that we never shared with him is causing things like mail passwords and such to break. Our release is nearly complete and we hope to have it out tomorrow sometime."

That was written yesterday... we'll see if a new JB appears today or not. If not my respect for Nate will have increased (and to be frank I appreciate him for it).

I have the two preferences folders. I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the capitalized preferences folder was from my previous installation of extended preferences, but I guess that only applied to the plist files. The reason I thought this is that there's a backup file in one of the preferences folder. Anyway, I have them.

Did you have any luck with rentals?

I also (knock on wood) have not had the email problem with passwords not saving nor the edge preferences problem.

I am now certain it was reading from var/root/Library/Preferences via the symlink. Don't think this was due to an app since I have a backup copy of everything on my iPhone and even back in October those files were located in /var/root...

I would imagine it changed due to the root user not being used anymore in (non jailbroken) 1.1.3. I noticed that /var/mobile is symlinked to /var/root so that's apparently how this jailbreak deals with the mobile user Vs. root user issue.

I have a feeling that this jailbreak was supposed to also symlink the contents of /var/preferences to /var/root/Library/Preferences but mistakingly used "Preferences" instead of "preferences."

This would explain why some of my settings were lost: csidata holds the status of airplane mode and whether or not the iPhone is to get the time from the network. Mine had been set to not receive network time (since I always seem to pick up CA cell towers here in AZ, and that throws off the time). After jailbreaking that setting was back to on (which is the default).

Did you have any luck with rentals?Downloading one now (Simpsons Movie). I tried one last week but was not able to get it onto the iPhone. I would assume it will now allow that but it's not done downloading so I don't know for sure.

Here's part of this jaibreak's script that does the symlinking:

mkdir -p /var/db/timezone
ln -s /var/db/localtime /var/db/timezone/localtime
ln -s /var/root/Library/Keychains /var/Keychains
chmod a+rwx /var/root/Library/Keychains
mkdir -p /var/Preferences
ln -s /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration /var/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
ln -s /var/root/Library/Preferences/csidata /var/Preferences/csidata
rm -rf /var/mobile
ln -s /var/root /var/mobile

(Emphasis added.)

It could be a simple mistake since var/root/Library/Preferences is capitalized (in keeping with that folder's naming convention).

I'm probably gonna post a note on Nate True's blog.

EDIT: I figured it had to be a typo in the script so I renamed preferences to preferences.new and renamed Preferences to preferences. Rebooted and all is well.

Hey Mike
If you have a moment, could you let me know the flaws in the following not very cunning plan. I still don't see any fixes for all ringtones being silent and iPod player hobbled. So, I'm thinking I will try to fix and test the 1.1.1 being cause of troubles theory by doing the following:
-- Uninstall all my 3P apps now while I'm in jailbroken 113
-- Restore via iTunes to a 'clean' 113
-- Follow the HackThatPhone downgrade method to get back to 1.1.1 as I did last night
-- Then take the extra step of going up to 1.1.2 jailbroken
-- Then run Nate's process again
Let me know where that is f***ed up if you can.
If you've not got time, no worries - I'll probably just give this a whirl anyway

That sounds like a good plan, though I wouldn't bother uninstalling apps if you are going to do a full restore (unless your Applications folder is symlinked to the media partition, which I doubt you got around to doing yet).

BTW: I'm starting to hear reports that others who went from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 are still at 1.1.1's processor and bus speeds. Really sounds like doing that gives you some sort of FrankenPhone or similar.

Did you then end up with one preferences file?

And as for the rental, it downloaded and even appeared to be syncing. When it got to the end, said it couldn't be copied because I wasn't connected to the internet. If yours works, then I'll have some sniffing around to do.

Thanks. Won't bother with wiping apps then. Frankenphone = nice  It is a gray, rainy day in Austin, so might as well give this a shot ...

Interesting; I'll be patient a little longer and see if an easier-to-accomplish, more comprehensive jailbreak is made available.

Did you then end up with one preferences file?
Well, one preferences folder in /var (the other is currently renamed in case it doesn't work out). Seems fine, and I suspect is what was intended.

And as for the rental, it downloaded and even appeared to be syncing. When it got to the end, said it couldn't be copied because I wasn't connected to the internet. If yours works, then I'll have some sniffing around to do.
Copying to the iPhone right now. I suspect it might fail due to space (I don't have enough free space to fit it, and I was surprised iTunes just went ahead and started syncing).

OK, it failed with the same iTunes Store message. Wonder what the heck is up with that? Were you perhaps running short on space too? I was keeping tabs on free space via SSH and the media partition was down to only 50 MB free when I finally got that error message. So that has me wondering if it was actually a free space issue.

BTW: iTunes was showing only 870 MB of free space. But via SSH (df -h) I could see 1 GB free (movie is 967 MB). I suspect this is due to some phantom "Other" stuff that isn't actually there.

If you've not got time, no worries - I'll probably just give this a whirl anyway
so is it possible to take a jailbroke 1.1.2otb that was recently upgraded to 1.1.3, and go back to 1.1.2 by starting from scratch?

Before I tried the sync, I deleted two films I had, so for media per Itunes, I had over 2GB free. So it should have worked, because I chose a movie that was just 1GB. Even if there was some "stuff" it wouldn't take up another gig. On the apps side, I had about 18MB free, but that's more than I had with my 1.1.2 souped up phone. I SSH'ed in to look around, but as I'm not as tech savvy as yourself, I really didn't see anything weird that should be taking up that much space.

That said, prior to the jailbreak, I had about 400MB free (or something close to that) per Itunes. After, I had 29MB free, with "other" shooting up over 600MB. What in the jailbreak process specifically causes that? I saw another post where "other" swelled to 900MB for a user. Perhaps that's it.

I have 1.1.3 working perfect, except for Google maps, which in my opinion is because I am from india. Other than that Summerboard works without dock, and a few other apps work too.. its not that bad.

"Other" in theory is stuff in the media partition not synced to iTunes. This jailbreak process alone leaves a half a gig of leftover stuff in /var/root/Media/softupgrade (that entire folder can be deleted).

Then there are in-camera photos, game ROMs, app data in /var/root/Library, and in cases where the original Applications folder was symlinked to the media partition, all applications. I freed up 750 MB by getting rid of the old applications folder and /var/root/Media/softupgrade. You will only have the "extra" applications folder if you previously had symlinked it.

That said sometimes "Other" gets confused and shows space being used that isn't. There's a fix for this I'm gonna search around for as mine is showing 200 MB extra space in other than it should be.

FWIW, over on Hackint0sh, NerveGas (part of the elite dev team, I believe) has announced that they plan to release their version of a 1.1.3 jailbreak...sounds like it could be released as early as Saturday, 1/26/08. Not sure if it will address your requirement for "an easier-to-accomplish, more comprehensive jailbreak" though...

Easier or not, it's from NervGas and I've got little reason to doubt his software. I've not had much luck with Nate's personally. I mean it works, and I guess thats a blessing in itself, but I'm not exactly comfortable with everything that I've read and seen the hoops people have had to jump through.

Having had an iPhone already self heal while I was on the road, I don't want to ever run into that problem again. I had this very problem the last time I jumped on to an early release of the 1.1.1 Jailbreak.

I'm crossing my fingers NervGas' release will at the least, solve the problems currently plaguing Nate's version. I don't expect it will be easy to implement, but I do expect it to be a lot cleaner on the back end.

OK, this took me a *LONG* time - partly interruptions, partly my phone did *not* want to restore to 1.1.1 - failed miserably a bunch of times (though it loves restoring to 113). Anyway, eventually got done with things as above - basically getting to where I ran Nate's JB process from a 1.1.2 jailbroken phone rather than a 1.1.1 jailbroken phone. Results so far are better. Final 113 Soft Upgrade install still got a 'main script execution failed' error just over halfway through - Nate's FAQ indicates this is ignorable and phone should still reboot itself after 10-15 minutes. I gave it 25 and it didn't reboot itself, so I helped it:smile: After that reboot I again have a 1.1.3 jailbroken phone.

Main issue - no sound on songs on iPod app and silent ringtones - no longer there - sound is there and all good.

Gmail password not sticking issue persisted, but that was easily fixable again via Big Boss' 1.1.3 Mailfix. Google Maps Find Me thing just as Mike, others have seen - did not work initially, works after installing and using the Locate Me app.

Around 318mb of 'Other' space showing in iTunes after JB process. There is now a 1.1.3 Soft Upg. Cleaner app that is meant to clear out the approx. 300mb image file from Nate's process - ran this and good to its word - Other went down from 318.6mb to 19.4mb. Nice.

Apps install and run fine so far as well, as they had before. I'd say 1.1.2 to Nate's process has worked much better than 1.1.1 to Nate's ...

apparently the real jailbreak 1.1.3 will be released today by the development team and not this leaked method by nate.

i'm resotring until then. it's not worth not having an edge icon, stock ringtones rendered useless, and passwordd not storing and no google maps locator.

Yea, just like they were gonna do yesterday.

The only reason an updated jb might be better is because Nate released what he had and there is now a wealth of feedback. I for one have no real issues; it was a painless jailbreak.

OTOH the dev team is acting more like a dev "teen."

I used the method outlined at HackThatPhone here (http://www.hackthatphone.com/113/iphone_downgrade_113_3.html) - scroll to the bottom of the page and there are links for Mac OSX and Windows methods, going from 1.1.1 JB to 1.1.2 with OktoPrep etc. - you can ignore all the Unlock part of course, just follow it up to where you are jailbbroken in 1.1.2 and then you can start on Nate's 1.1.3 JB process ...

I think Nate was the scapegoat for this JB since he's got such a fan base with TTR/Dock etc, that he could "take the hit" so to speak.

This way the Dev team could test the waters with Apple's reaction to this new JB, as well as clearing the names of those involved who are actively seeking Apple sanctioned employment.

Just a guess, I mean I don't think theres been one break through on the iPhone that wasn't surrounded in controversy. Honestly, think about that one, every time there was a "first" on the iphone, there was someone with a story to tell, and then someone else with their side of that same story...

iPhone Atlas has a report (http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/01/26/warning-current-iphone-113-jailbreak-may-prevent-official-third-party-apps/) up now saying that apparently Nate's method may prevent installation of 'official' 3rd party apps once SDK is released:

"We’ve received word that the method may prevent installation of official third-party applications that will be created by the forthcoming iPhone SDK (software development kit) from Apple. The reason: this jailbreak method breaks “Nikita,” a component that is responsible for installing signed software. It appears that the current process is reversible, but almost certainly won’t be able to co-exist with official third-party apps."

I'm pretty sure issues with SMS order have been widely reported on non-jailbroken 1.1.3 phones.
Ringtones issue = there is a fix in Installer for this now, from the Big Boss source (http://sleepers.net/iphonerepo) - I haven't tried it as I haven't needed it this time round, but have used his Mailfix with great success ...

Used the Dev Team Jailbreak and the guide posted on here. Took me 2 hours, and a few tries, but it works like it came from the factory! Locate me works, and have not had any issues at all!
