im thinking about buying a laptop, and im starting to consider a mac. i thought it might be a good idea since it would let me be more familiar with the mac os, and also might be more compatible with my phone.
of course id still need it to run windows and i know it can do that, but im still not exactly sure if it will be the same as a regular pc...
does anybody have any suggestions or recommend anything? thx.

Of course you know about the Mac Air.. But apple is releasing the updated MacBooks real soon which will have the same new touch pad as the MacAir, so look at those, I know I am.:2cool:

Go with the Mac. The way it works with the iPhone is seamless. If you do need to run Windows on it (I can't even comprehend the thought) Boot Camp has you covered. It'll be a full version of Windows, running on your Mac.

Yup, Windows will run on the Mac just like it does on a PC.
Go Mac, and you'll never go back! :D

Too much bad advice here, so...
1) Decide what you want the laptop for.
2) Decide how much you want to spend.
3) If you use primarily Windows based apps then by a Windows based laptop. There's no point using an emulator if you don't have to.

Emulator? Have you used Boot Camp? Get across the point that it does run Windows, without limitations.

Yeah, it's nearly as good - as you would expect considering Macs have pretty standard Intel architecture these days - but not quite considering the Mac isn't specifically designed to use Vista. I think Mossberg mentions this in his review.
However, if you want to use Vista or XP on a Mac then you're going to have to buy a copy whereas you would get it free with an MSOS based machine so, once again, it comes down to what he wants it for.
Not to hard to understand, is it?

In the sense that they don't think of original ideas, and they don't bring much culture into their product. And you say, well, why is that important? Well, proportionately spaced fonts come from typesetting, and beautiful books. That's where one gets the idea. If it weren't for the Mac, they would never have that in their products. And so I guess I am saddened, not by Microsoft's success. I have no problem with their success. They've earned their success.. for the most part. A Mac's a waste of time for you then. The unit itself is too expensive and you're going to have to cough up at least another few hundred dollars for XP or Vista. If you can stretch to $1,200 get a 2.0Ghz Dell XPS M1330. If not the 1.66GHz goes for $999.

the MB is decent. the air is good, but i dont like that it doesnt have an optical drive. and the MBP might be perfect, but also a little expensive.
decisions, decisions.....:frown:
Unless you absolutely have to have the thinnest portable in the world, I'd personally go for the MacBook Pro as it's only $200 more than the Air. For that extra $200, you'd get a full compliment of ports (USB, ethernet, etc.), more storage space, user replaceable battery, optical drive, bigger screen, stereo speakers, etc.
Then of course if budget is a big concern, the MacBook would be the way to go.

i guess im just stuck deciding between the MB or MBP. besides the price, of course, what are the main differences between the two?
The MBP is a little faster with 2.2GHz in the base model VS. the 2.0GHz on the base model MB. Also, the 15.4" MBP has an LED backlit screen VS. fluorescent on the MB.
Then, of course, there's the backlit keyboard, Firewire 800, Express card slot, better graphics card, MUCH better speakers, bigger hard drive and more RAM included...all significant benefits in the MBP.
I had a MB for about 7 months, but sold it last June when they updated the MBP. I do graphics work for a living though so I needed a faster 'pro' level machine.

I use the MBP, but mainly have it because I do media editing for work. I prefer the design of the the MacBook over it, but the Pro is more.. pro.

Oh, I forgot one thing. In favor of the MB, the hard drive is user-replaceable/upgradeable. This is not the case with the MBP.

I am very impressed with the quality of the MBP in terms of the display and the speed. This is my first Mac that I have actually owned. It is well worth the $$ so far.
another rumor today on the impending MBP's that many of us are waiting on
http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/30/evidence-for-new-macbook-pros/
The current MacBook Pros which were released in June (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/05/apple-releases-new-macbook-pros-with-santa-rosa/) carry a system identifier label of "MacBookPro3,1". One reader notes that an application called MiniBatteryLogger (http://www.macrumors.com/c.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.emeraldion.it%2Fsoftware% 2Fmacosx%2Fminibatterylogger.html&t=1201808715) provides public battery tracking logs, and recently revealed (http://www.macrumors.com/c.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fburgos.emeraldion.it%2Fmbl%2F entry%2F5cba8768214db05dd629188bd1ded708&t=1201808715) an entry with an identifier of "MacBookPro4,1". "MacBookPro4,1" is presumably the identifier for the unreleased MacBook Pro revisions. The author of the application states that the identifier is obtained automatically from the system, though there are no guarantees that it wasn't faked.
However, this same new "MacBookPro4,1" identifier has also been found in the latest developer seeds of Mac OS X 10.5.2 from Apple. In contrast, the public version of Mac OS X 10.5.1 does not contain the "4,1" identifier.
In many ways, all this does is verify what we have presumed to be true... that MacBook Pro revisions are coming, and soon enough that the Mac OS X 10.5.2 will support them, but it's still somewhat reassuring for those waiting patiently (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=412084) for the new MacBook Pros.

I've been a windows user for the last 20+ yrs and taking the plunge to something different has been a contemplation for a long time. Every time I decided to buy a Mac, I ended up just getting a new windows laptop instead.
Price wasnt an option in making my decision~ I just felt the MBP offered a little more than I needed. The backlit keyboard of the MPB wasnt something I had to have considering I am usually in well lit areas or at home.
I've only been using my MB (white) for the past 4 hours; so I cant add anything to this thread other than to say again that I am pleased with my purchase. Should have done it a long time ago.

John, your comment is so very interesting and actually made me think of the unveiling of each Apple product I've purchased: iPod (80GB), iPhone (8GB), and now MB.
I'm sitting here laughing about how careful I was opening each and just marveling before finally removing from the box.
I've NEVER experienced greater heights of ewwws & ahhhs opening anything else. I'm convinced that Apple's R&D put a lot of thought into presentation and style. I'm not sure if it's the sleek factor that sets them above par or not; but we gotta admit, Apple's stuff just looks fantastic.

LOL, I am really surprised by how much thought must be put into the packaging and display of each Apple product. I think I could have fit two MBP boxes into my HP laptop box. Makes you wonder if it really means that other companies don't spend any time at all thinking about those things. Of course, I guess we end up paying for it too, in the end.

Apple has just added a how to and tips section of their website for folks moving from Windows
http://www.apple.com/findouthow/macosx/
Apple has launched a subsection of its site that offers dozens of how-to videos to try to sway Windows users and to help new Mac customers get started.
Called "Find out how," the site offers video on the use of the Mac OS X and separate sections on how to create and manage photos, movies, Web content, music and documents. For Windows users thinking of taking the plunge, the site offers video on how to move data from a Windows PC to a Mac.
The videos are short, lasting only a few minutes at most. Along with the videos, the site offers text tutorials in all the categories. In the "move to Mac" video, Apple first tells visitors that workers at an Apple store will move data from a PC to a Mac for them. It also gives instructions on how to move data from an external hard drive to the Mac.
Other videos include how to run Windows on the Mac using Apple Boot Camp. It also suggests buying virtualization software from Parallels or VMware, if the Mac user wants to be able to run simultaneously separate windows for each OS. Boot Camp requires the Mac to be restarted when switching from Windows back to OS X.
People who want to take the videos with them can download them to Apple iTunes. From there, the files can be transferred to an iPhone, iPod, or Apple TV.
The launch date of the site was not listed, but it appears to be fairly new. Apple is currently on a roll in selling the Mac. The company last week reported shipping 44% more Mac computers during the fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 29 than in the same period in 2006. In shipping 2.3 million Macs during the quarter, the company took in 47% more revenue than the year before.

edit: I never should have sold my LC.
:) me too, just chekced -- I thought my original 512 box from '85 was back there but it was the SE-30 (what a hot Mac that was) box from later '80's. The 512 box is home in the garage I think. Great boxes -- so sturdy, great for packing, moving etc. Many of the others are still around also -- even spotted an ole Power Computing box back there for the one time I bought non Apple. And of course the littl ole Mini box back there as most recent, well no the iPhone box more recent. Who would ahve thunk in the '80's that I would be taking a picutre of the '80's box with a camera in a tiny Apple product :) :) cool......

I do have my share of Apple boxes going back to '93, which is when I bought my first computer. It (a Quadra 605 with a 160MB HD and 4MB of memory) remained untouched on a table for a year until I found the guts to try to figure it out. I was computerphobic till then. Things change. All my Halloween and Xmas decorations are stuffed in Apple boxes in the basement. About 2 dozens of them.

I think I may be making that switch soon to. I'd just be looking at the base model MacBook, though, as my budget is a little tighter. A MBP is just out of the question altogether, but I'd really like to make the switch. My Vista laptop is just getting worse, what with things just breaking completely and stuff failing more and more often now. I'm currently running a 1.6ghz AMD Turion X2, 2gb RAM, and only the Nvidia GeForce Go 6150, so the base MB is already a step up, except in HDD space. I've also seen a 2.16ghz MB on the refurbished section of the Apple Store. Is that the "older" version or something? I just thought it'd be a great deal since it was $1050 and had a 120GB HDD and the superdrive.

Hey, I believe the refurbished Macbook would be ok. I have seen some of them on youtube as they are packed and such. I went to our local Computers plus store as they sell Apple computers. I have to agree with this. My first Apple experience was in May of last year when I bought an 80GB iPod, I was amazed at the detail and presentation of the packaging. Then I got an iPhone on iDay. Again, Amazed. I foolishly sold my iPhone in November to get a Tilt, and then an N95-3. I came back to the iPHone a couple weeks ago, and even though I'd had an iPhone before it was like a whole new and exciting experience. And then last weekend I got my Macbook and again, I was so excited opening it up and getting it set up. I'm also very pleased with how seamless the iPhone works with it. I'm willing to bet that was part of Apple's strategy with the iPhone. Get people hooked on the iPhone and then get them wanting a Mac. I'm sure there are others like me that have completely converted to Mac in just a few months.

Of course you know about the Mac Air.. But apple is releasing the updated MacBooks real soon which will have the same new touch pad as the MacAir, so look at those, I know I am.:2cool:
Any idea when they are updating the macbooks?

I've heard of them possibly updating the touchpad to the same abilities of the Air's and an update to the processors. Something about "Penryn."

i was trying this out, Go Home (http://www.apple.com/findouthow/macosx/#customize-gohome), and in attempting to place my 'house' icon in the dock, it disappeared. Can someone tell me how to get it back because the "How To" didnt cover that.
Hate to bump- but if anyone "JOHN" could answer this question, I'd be extremely grateful.

I've had my black MacBook for 2 weeks and love it. However it collects more smudges and grease than the iPhone. Be sure to clean it often.

You could just access your work pc through gotomypc.com and not have to run windows on your mac at all. That's the way I do it. Just bought my first mac 10 days ago and I refuse to put windows on it.
I like to impress my partners! They have no clue how I do those things.
Also, I found several PC programs that I had to have for work and they have to run natively because the incredible security needed. GotomyPC wouldn't work.

nah, i dont think anything like that would bother me too much. i think it would be more annoying having the white one and getting it dirty and being more noticable. :tounge:

yeah the white one didn't do much for me (no offense to the white macbook owners). I opted for the Black with 2GB RAM and 160 GB hard drive. Whats funny is, if you customize a white macbook online and up it to the 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive the price comes to $1,524.00. vs. $1,649.00 for the Black. I didn't notice this till after I purchased my Black one in the store and then went online and started configuring all the models, but I paid $125 more just to have a black MacBook over a white one.

If I had the MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro, I would have the black one. I think it's just a bit more Apple-ish.

Color is all about preference. Every PC/laptop I've ever had has been black; this time, I wanted something different. Also, sit down at Starbucks with the white one and watch how many people wanna be your friend.
I got the 2.2GHz - 160GB hard drive for $1100 :laugh2: :tounge: :laugh2:
Dont ask me how... I'm not telling.

hmm is it a Core 2 Duo or Core Duo?
at $1100 I'd have taken a white one and put a black skin on it. I hate just about everything in white but thats a crazy good price.

Dont let the price I paid fool you. In this (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/193618-post28.html) thread, you said you got the "middle" level; which, according to the price I paid would make you think we have the same one; we dont. I have the "high" end at a "low" end price.
The only difference in mine and what's on Apple's website for the high end is that its black; mine is white.
I'm glad you're loving the one you got; I still am too.
WOW, I ask the question above, check digg a couple of hours later and looky here -- info that MBP's availability is drying up which is usually a good sign of impending release.
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/02/15/macbook_pros_running_dry_in_the_channel_ahead_of_r efreshes.html
Inventory of MacBook Pros has become severely constrained over the past three weeks, with some reseller now reflecting backorder status on the soon-to-be refreshed Apple professional notebooks.
Apple retail partner and online reseller Best Buy has recently run out of 15-inch models (http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-1989299-10474050?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbestbuy.rdr.channelintel ligence.com%2Fgo.asp%3FfVhzOGNRAAQIASNiE1tYShloF3Q 4YRlOAgRKZmRZUxdDXWwQcnB8HwIACBdnaF9UUUYRfn5pQ0w3M CMXHR9HTyh8DQYYB0MrXW0nPEAdQ1lNOn0ADxgDQDlabS4gXQ1 DWkUWNlJbWEoZaAwTGVA6NDYQQkJfUSoxG0UCFxxvFXR9axoFA gMOaWNZRRkWR2MMemI-QlENAAZ5IR0ACBxFOwJHVk0ceDBBW1VeTDY2QF1NEFEwRywgNh AOU1xQPDkGB0RN%26nAID%3D11138&cjsku=8398637), and lists on its online store wait times of one to two weeks for availability.
Meanwhile, other large Apple resellers have managed to maintain availability of the Intel-based Core 2 Duo notebooks, but have informed AppleInsider that their flow of incoming and forward looking orders has decreased significantly over the past month, ahead of a product refresh.
"With each passing week, [MacBook Pros] are becoming harder and harder to come by," said one source, who spoke under the condition of anonymity. "Orders are still trickling in, but in quantities half those of December."
AppleInsider reported last month that Apple had delayed (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/21/next_gen_apple_macbook_pros_to_gain_multi_touch_tr ackpad.html) the planned MacBook Pro refresh by approximately four weeks in the months and weeks approaching Macworld Expo, but that the new models were still due to arrive shortly.
Among the enhancements (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/21/next_gen_apple_macbook_pros_to_gain_multi_touch_tr ackpad.html) expected as part of the impending release are processor upgrades to Intel's recently introduced 45-nanometer "Penryn" Core 2 Duo processors (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/12/05/intel_to_launch_penryn_mobile_chips_ahead_of_macwo rld.html) at speeds of up to 2.6GHz and the addition of multi-touch trackpads (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/21/next_gen_apple_macbook_pros_to_gain_multi_touch_tr ackpad.html) across the entire product line.

Amazon offering rebates on MBPs
http://switchtoamac.com/site/new-macbook-pro-models-on-tuesday-february-19th.html
Internet retailer Amazon is currently offering a $150 rebate on current MacBook Pro models. Of note is that the rebate is only effective on purchases made up to and including Monday February 18, 2008.
Perhaps this is a clue that the online retailer is aware that new MacBook Pro models are to be released on Tuesday February 19th? Speculation has been high surrounding potential MacBook Pro updates for the past several weeks. The Amazon rebate (dates listed below) offers a compelling argument that current MacBook Pro models may be phased out in the near future as the retailer has often provided rebates on Mac models prior to the end of their lifecycle.
The MacBook Pro received its last major revision in June 2007 (http://switchtoamac.com/site/apple-releases-new-macbook-pro-models-with-santa-rosa-based-processors-led-displays-faster-graphics-and-more-memory.html) followed by an incremental processor upgrade (http://switchtoamac.com/site/apple-bumps-macbooks-to-santa-rosa-new-26ghz-macbook-pro-option.html) option in November 2007.
