neither here nor macrumors has a thread about this (im almost positive), but itunes 7.6 or iPhone v 1.1.3 added the ability to drag and drop everything! im so excited! i HATE checking every song i want and i dont want a sstupid playlist either. the check box for it is in the same place it has always been (for ipods and what not)
I haven't read this anywhere but if its true that would be better than checking because that is such a hassle and takes too darn long ugh

Very cool.
It's a function of iTunes 7.6, not the iPhone update. I updated the iPhone first, and the functionality wasn't there, but after updating iTunes, it was.
I've been hoping they'd get to this sooner than later. This update is looking better every minute...

Wait. I'm confused here. What does this mean?
I searched for it in the new iTunes help file and got this:
"You might want to manage songs on your iPod manually if you want to use your iPod with more than one computer, or if your iTunes library contains more music than your iPod can hold."
I want to be able to drag and drop mixes from work onto my iPhone to listen to in my car and still be able to sync to my library at home. Does this option give me that ability?

It's a function of iTunes 7.6 and it's exactly the same thing as if you were to manually manage the songs with an iPod. You can drag and drop songs on to the iPhone from any computer you connect it to. It enables you to put music on the device from multiple computers without erasing the current songs on there. The syncing at home will wipe out the music you manually put on there however. You have to manually manage on all computers.

You can't do this with any podcasts though.

If you're still syncing other information (contacts, calendars, etc.) the manual management function only seems to work with the computer you're syncing to.
Here's specifically what I'm encountering...
1. I currently sync contacts with home computer. If I check the box that says "Manually manage music and videos," I am able to drag and drop media into the iPhone and delete media from the iPhone without syncing. It works the same way as my iPods that I manually manage.
2. If I plug my iPhone into my work computer and check the box that says "Manually manage music and videos" and click "Apply," it tells me the following:
"The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase the iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."
Apparently if you're syncing anything to your iPhone through a particular computer, then that's the only computer you can manually manage your media through. There's still some value, but it's not nearly as attractive as I thought at first. With my iPod, I can plug it into any computer and drag and drop music onto it. It doesn't look like the iPhone is going to let us do that unless we elect to sync NOTHING. Unfortunately, that isn't an option for me until Apple allows us to sync contacts over the air through MS Exchange just like I've done with my three previous smartphones.

Hello All
I ran into an annoying iTunes 7.6 behavior with my 1.1.1 jailbroken phone...
I thought I'd have a look at the new "manually manage media" feature for my phone and checked the "manually manage music and videos" box and unchecked the "sync only checked songs and videos box"...looked around...thought "hey that's neat"...unchecked the "manually manage..." box and re-checked the "sync only..." box...
Now iTunes 7.6 pops up the dreaded "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone...Go the the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings." box. Not only that but all the iPod content (music and videos) on my phone is gone.
Funny though, when I use the SwapTunes app to flip between the media I sync with my work and home computers and it's on the secondary media sync, iTunes can recognize my phone just fine and my iPod content is still there.
When I look at my Media sub-directories using WinSCP, I can still see all music and videos in the iTune_Control sub-directory even though its not visible in the iPod app.
So what could be the issue? Is it just a control file that's corrupted? Up to now I've had pretty good luck navigating away from issues but this gotcha is a little annoying.
I have WinSCP and terminal access to the phone.
And ideas for minor surgery to restore visibility of my music and video database in the iPod app?
