sorry for hte newie question
i'm purchasing a ringtone and i want to know how long the iphone actaully rings until the caller is redirected to the voicemail.
it seems longer than 15 seconds, but i need to know the exact time so i can take advantage of my ringtone fully.
please help

I'm not sure but if you have a land line you can call your phone and time the ringer.

well if i feel like screening someones call. i might aswell listen to the song i've chosen for its full purpose of easy pleasurable listening..

Why would you want anyone to wait 5 seconds? Why would you want anyone to wait 2 minutes?

Even if the ringtone is 5 seconds, it will loop for the 15 sec.
You say you are buying a ringtone. Are you expecting the caller to hear the ringtone? If so that is called an AnswerTone. That is something different. You can order answertones on AT&T which costs $3 per month, but that is their selection of music.
