AFAIK, midi is essentially data that triggers an instrument of sound. Think of it as music notes written on paper. You need a guitar to play those notes. The iPhone does not have a "guitar" or something for the midi to "play."

No that's not going to work. The file must be in m4r for a ringtone and .caf for system sounds....you could just convert your file to these formats....Try searching around and you'll find hundreds of threads about how to do this....
