WOW.

I am about to test it now, but basically, put your phone up to music, and it will identify it!
Edit - it's on installer already
I can guarantee that 99% of the music I listen to wont be able to be identified. This kinda thing is only good for the mainstream stuff.

Still cool. Worked for me the first time on some obscure maxwell song...

Worked for me with about 7 out 10 songs I randomly played on the radio. Kind of cool. I guess if there is a song playing somewhere and you want to know the name of it you can get it through your iphone. Kind of like that phone comercial Verizon had a couple of months ago on one of their phones that has this music recognition. Not much use for me personally but kind of cool to mess around with.

Oh yeah? How about "Cronus," part of Bill Chase's "Ennea?" That's not exactly mainstream. This app has identified practically every odd tune I've thrown at it, and I've gone out of my way to trip it up.

How long does it take for recognition. Every time I have tried, it gets stuck on Contacting info server.
Thanks,

Takes about 5-10 seconds.

Hmm....How loud is the music when it is being recorded? Also, has anyone else run into this problem of getting stuck on the contacting info server screen. If so, any fixes, or suggestions how to?

Yes, seems to happen to me quite a bit. I "think" it helps if you don't hold the iPhone too close to a speaker. Hard to tell without any input from the app, but after holding the iPhone further away I was able to get it to work (well, at least 50% of the time).
I give it no more then 10-15 seconds and if it's still at Connecting I start it again, hopefully while the song is still playing.

I've also seen slightly better luck with phone farther from speakers. And Erica' site confirms that if it doesn't contact the ID server in 30 seconds, just restart the app (there are no real status message changes until it succeeds) - I've had some songs hit after several restarts of the app ...

There is a program similar to this on the blackjack, and at&t charges $6 a month for it, or 99 cents every time you use it.

It works for me every single time when on wi-fi, but never works over edge.

Good to know. Maybe there was too much background noise in the car.

She's released two new betas of it today - one just for internationalization / characters support - but they haven't made it to Installer yet last I looked ...

Installer has an update for this Listen app. There is now a button to start recording. Overall it looks more polished. I think it still needs an option to record another song, rather than having to exit and come back.

It gives you the option to sample another if it succeeds in identifying one, just forces you to exit and restart if it fails to find song. Also has slight status bar change to show you when it's done sampling and trying to contact the server ...

Another update released: Beta06. Now it will give you the option to sample another song even if it fails the first time.

An option to save what you've pulled up would be nice.

I was soooo excited to see this on the iPhone. This was the main reason why I wanted the Sony Ericsson w580i because it had the capability. I was going to get it for my second upgrade phone that I've been eligible to receive at a discount since August (I still need to get that stinker to offset the cost of getting the iPhone on iday).
I was really hoping to use this to identify the songs they play at the dance clubs that I go to. Unfortunately, the songs I'm interested in are salsa. What do you think the chances are that a non-mainstream non-english song are going to be in the database? So far, I haven't had much luck, but it identifies most songs I hear on the radio, even Christian songs, which aren't really mainstream, unfortunately.

I would recommend you try it again using a different stereo or radio. Maybe you are picking up some kind of interference or static that is garbling the sampling so much that it cannot find a match.

Worked every time for me and over WiFi and EDGE. An option to connect to the iTunes store would be cool.

It doesn't yet have another error message to display when it can't contact the server - so it seems that you can see 'song not found' a lot when it is really a different issue - and from what I can gather the server it's trying to hit is pretty erratic, at least this week ...

Beta 6 will display a different message if it can't connect to the server. Not sure it's on Installer yet, but it can be downloaded and updated manually from here:
http://ericasadun.com/ftp/Applications/Listen/
My main issue is still that it fails to recognize songs. And without any feedback on the recording level, or the ability to "hear" what is being sent, I have no idea if it's distortion from being too close, low volume from being too far away, or just not being recognized due to not being in the song database. I would imagine these issues will be addresses in time (hopefully).

Yeah, while I was typing that I was thinking I'd seen on Erica's site that new error message was included in 6 - but in playing with it last night, never saw a new one. So ... guess I'm in that same boat with you, on not being sure why it fails when it does. I've had it work quite well when just letting it sit across the room from stereo / speakers, and fail when right next to them, and vice-versa - so no rhyme or reason that I've spotted yet ...
