If i'm not mistaken you should always have edge. Its wifi you may be without most of the time.

Here in the UK there isn't EDGE coverage everywhere. I think EDGE is 2.5g and I think where there is no EDGE coverage there is only 2g.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong?
Update: EDGE is 2.75g and GPRS is 2.5g. So when there is no EDGE coverage, there is only GPRS. You should be able to make calls with either of these, as long as your network has between 1 and 5 bars.

well to update this I've been going round and round with apple and at&t. Apple says its a network problem with at&t and transfers me, they say it may be a problem with the phone, also they want me to call them from another phone when i'm in an area without edge and sit there while they try and troubleshoot it.

I haven't seen this come up on my iPhone, but I have seen it come up on my AT&T Blackberry. Whenever I lose EDGE, my Blackberry reverts to GPRS. The EDGE indicator either becomes all lower case or is replaced by GPRS. I can still make calls when GPRS shows, but my Blackberry becomes a useless brick when the little edge indicator appears.
Not sure if the same applies to my iPhone. In some parts of my house, where the signal is weakest, I've seen no signal bars, yet the EDGE "E" is still present. I can tell you that when this occurs, I can't make any calls or receive any messages.

You should be able to makes calls with out edge. Your "E" will disappear when you receive and make a call. Edge does not allow you to use the internet and makes calls at the same time anyways.
When the Iphone switches to GPRS the E disappears and you will only see the blue box
good luck on trying to resolve your problem
