You should be able to upgrade, unless your phone in unlocked.
Most jailbroken phone are running 1.1.2. A smaller percentage of them have 1.1.1. And very few still have 1.0.2.
1.1.1 Advantages - By visiting jailbreakme.com, you can jailbreak your iPhone via a website. No computers necessary. Easiest jailbreak, hands down. 1.1.1 also includes features such as double tapping the Home button and Mobile iTunes.
1.1.2 Advantages - It's the latest firmware. It is the most secure firmware. And there are a lot of apps out there that will only run on either 1.1.1 or 1.1.2.
However, I'm sure that there are still several unlocked iPhones on 1.0.2. If you're jailbroken only, it's wise to update.

I am still on 1.0.2 and plan on staying there till Apple actually offers one of two things or both things. I want to see an ebook reader that works without having to Jailbreak, and I don't mean the webapp, I want a native ebook like booksapp. The other thing that would make me switch is is some real updates in the OS on the phone like built in IM or MMS.
Aside from that 1.0.2 works well for me, this is the first phone that I've owned that I've not thought about getting rid of on a daily basis.

Effects on unlocks and Third-party applications
The update breaks AnySim's unlocks. Logically, you can't unlock this update using AnySim (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/exclusive/iphone-dev-team-to-open-source-free-unlock-software-328846.php) and there's no alternative to iTunes for activation. If you want to activate, it will only work using iTunes and a standard AT&T account. Nate says, "that is the only way we have been able to activate so far." Nate tried to upgrade an AnySim 1.2u iPhone and it failed. Even while he was able to force it to boot, the phone refused to activate even with a normal AT&T SIM card. "I suspect it's due to the fact that the baseband could not be upgraded to the 1.1.3 'required' version", he says.
Other updates remain untested, like iPhone Sim Free (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/iphone-unlock/video-of-iphone-sim-free-unbricking-and-unlocking-verdict-it-works-309744.php) or any of the hardware-based ones, like TurboSIM (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/breaking/iphone-100-unlocked-using-turbo-sim-card-289148.php). In theory, these should work (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/iphone/bricked-iphones-now-working-calls-with-iphonesimfree-and-turbosim-305253.php) just fine, but jailbreak (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/breaking/iphone-dev-teams-working-111-jailbreak-reopens-door-to-apps-and-unlocks-309447.php) and activation would be absolutely impossible for the time being. We would have to wait until the update gets released in the open to try new alternative activation methods (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/iphone/unbricked-iphones-now-fully-working-calls-included-305253.php).
Your favorite (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/iphone-gaming/native-lucasarts-games-emulation-makes-iphone-absolutely-perfect-326257.php) third-party apps will be gone too, with no possibility of return for now. The update fixes the bugs which allowed "the jailbreak method we were using for 1.1.2, locking us out again, as expected."

i still use 1.0.2. i havent updated cuz im just lazy i guess. but if the rumors about 1.1.3 r true then once its cracked ill prolly update to that.
I'm still running the good 'ol 1.0.2 with no plans to really upgrading - I'm quite happy with mine.

The bad thing by not updating is all the bug fixes which make the phone better to operate.

I've been on tmobile in chicago for about a year and I'm jailbroken. Recently I moved out east in western PA and the data speed sucks.
If cingular is better out here then I may switch. In that case I would update Otherwise I'm stuck with 1.0.2 on tmob. If I was just going to jailbreak then I'd update to 1.1.2 for sure.

I'm still rocking 1.0.2 mainly because I went to upgrade to 1.1.1 and had a really bad experience due to user error (my own) and I just never felt like trying again.
Still on 1.0.2,not upgrading any soon maybe if 1.1.4 introduces something groundbreaking.

The only problem is with the sound? Lordy, its a phone/ipod, the sound is everything. Thats like saying the only problem with my plasma tv is the picture quality.
You peeps are missing out on improved sound quality with the updates,
and less safari crashes, and more security patches, and smoother transitions from app to app, its just a much improved functioning phone with the updates. Kinda like updating your computer with a snappier os.

the sound problem rarely happens, i can live with it, proably need to reboot anyways.. but i can't live with out 3rd party apps, i heard you can't use some apps with 1.1.1, & apple keeps putin up walls with every new FW release to block them. have u seen 1.1.3?

Hey guy's im still on 1.0.2 !!! and no, i have not unlocked my phone..:laugh2:
i just think it it is the best choice, i mean 99.9% of the 3rd party apps work with 1.0.2 and besides, i can't find any usefull features in the 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 updates that will benifit me.
sometimes i'm however tempted to update but the last time i tried, itunes gave me to many errors (or maybe i just missed a step or something)...
plus i have made a beatiful theme for my iphone that i just cant rid off.
and im always using ibrickr to install wallpaper, ringtones, icons and other goodies...
one question....does iDemocracy 2.0.1 (http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1434) works just like ibrickr??
if it does i will definately update.....
please help...
just updated to 1.1.1 today.
i figured why not.
upgrade took 10mins
all my contacts are still there too.

I dunno are there any benefits over 1.1.1?
I wanted the itunes icon and the doubleclick feature is pretty cool to have too.

exactly!! thats what i did, i thought that 1.0.2 was great till i upgraded to 1.1.1 and then to 1.1.2. It soo much smoother now. alot faster and the sound is much much better. and as for the apps, all the apps i had on 1.0.2. work on 1.1.2. and even have new ones that wouldnt work on 1.0.2...i personally suggest you upgrade. As for 1.1.3. ..im sure a hack will be found for it once its out!

Yes, what ever you do, those that have jailbroken DO NOT UPDATE when the new 1.1.3 or whatever comes out, just wait till you get the okay from TinMan :gasp:
ya im jailbroken and unlocked..so ill wait a while before updating..just to make sure i wont brick the phone or anything, ill wait till alot of reviews have been posted and judge from theyre luck.
so what are the benefits of getting 1.1.2 over 1.1.1

Oh man I definitely noticed the speed increase.
I can browse webpages faster now on edge.
I am very happy that I made the move.

I folded, I updated to 1.1.2 last night . I was holding out for something amazing and didnt want to update cause of the books app. I recently got an Asus Eee PC and its become my hacking toy. I read on it now as opposed to using my iPhone . My iPhone has the default firmware and that's it . Maybe if an ebook app comes out for iPhone after the sdk I will do that again .

Me too! Still with my unlocked iphone on 1.0.2 and quite happy. Although i did start a thread for updating from 1.0.2 to 1.1.3 using Ziphone. Got a lot of helpful replies but hav'nt mustered up the courage yet to go thru with it. Maybe if someone else is successful then i'll give it a shot :)
