how many times have you tried it? if it happens repeatedly, your best bet may be to restore it.
remove the USB cable from the PC and reboot the PC. When it's back up, plug the cable into a different USB port, launch iTunes, and then connect the iPhone.
If the iPhone is showing in iTunes, but you still have problems syncing, change the cable out with another one. My dual dock has a bad connection in it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I generally just charge off of it now.

found this on another forum i pasted it below, and it works. just disable your internet connection and it will sync.
I believe that the when the iPhone syncs, a process called MDCrashReportToo grabs a list of crash logs off your iPhone and attempts to send them to the Apple Servers at HQ. I believe that these servers were offline this afternoon, and that meant MDCrashReportToo couldn't proceed correctly. Thus, disabling your connection to the net meant that MDCrashReportToo never tried to contact Apple HQ in the first place. The servers now seem to be online and all syncing problems have been fixed.

I have the same problem but what I have done is disabled automatic sync, and then if I have new music to sync, unchecked the 'sync music' option, and applied, and then checked it again to sync all new things. I apply this to anything new such as contacts, bookmarks etc.
Also, could this problem be anything due to the recent security update?

Thanks nygemini thats sorted it now :D
But I still have to disable airport before I can sync, does anyone know when this will be fixed? Possibly, when the next update is available?

Man, you want to talk about almost having a complete meltdown. I was going crazy wondering what I installed that made my iPhone not want to update. Just had to turn off Airport and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the info....wew!

lol well my dad was going crazy at me; saying that I had been on a dodgy website when he'd told me not to go on porn on it lmao (I hadn't)
So it was great to tell him that it was Apple's fault lol

lmao I used to get it off my dad when we were running windows, but now we've fully switched over to macs, there's no problems with viruses and addware and spyware and all that anymore :D
I'm still having to disable airport before I can sync :s I thought nygemini said that it was fixed? I'm in no rush I'm just wondering.
Thanks,
Arran
Check your firewall settings.

for the first time since I got my phone (iDay+1), I was unable to sync. I restarted the phone, restarted the computer...nothing.
Then I found this thread and disconnected my internet. VOILA!
Great Tip!
I had a similar problem when my firewall was blocking one of the iTunes sub programs.
Added it back to my trusted list and I sync fine now. Double-check both your windows firewall (if in XP or higher) settings, and your router settings (if you are using one) and if you have McAfee or Nortons installed, check those too.

I've tried every single thing on this thread and my phone still won't sync to my computer. Yet my 30gb ipod will. So I must do everything iphone related on my brothers computer. In about to reload windows anyway because its so cluttered so hopefully it'll work then.

i had the same prob with itunes 7.5 and Vista, couldn't sync my Nano, iPhone or 60GB ipod.
fixed the prob deleting the apple device (might be under USB mass storage device) in device manager. Vista reinstalled it again and problem solved (for me anyhow!).

like I said my iPod works fine. When I plug in my iphone absolutely nothing shows up in iTunes. Doesn't even try. I've done it all.

Are you using the USB cable that came with the iPhone? Or are you using the cable that came with your iPod?

The phone cable. I also tried the iPod cable but that didn't help
At this point I would look at trying to download something like iPhonebrowser or iBrickr and just seeing if those programs can see your phone. If not, then it's possible that the port on the bottom of the phone is bad and you might need to take it in for a replacement.
PS I wouldn't mention those programs to the Genius, as they would think that the phone is mod'd and your warranty is voided. If your phone IS mod'd, then before you take it in, hold the sleep and home buttons till you get the connect to itunes logo. you might not be able to restore it, but at least you'll be able to keep them from knowing that it's hacked.

port is good. It syncs on my brothers computer. I think its just my computer. I've been meaning to reload windows anyway so maybe that'll do it. And its not modded at all.
hmmmm....
Have you tried copying over your profile info to your PC from your Brothers?
there are several files that have to be copied, some directly in whatever login profile you were on when you synced, and also some in the program folder as well.
You would also need to copy over all media as well.

I'll give that a try. Although I dont really know how to or what exactly you're talking about. Haha. Mind giving me some hints?
What type of PC and Operating System?

if you've been meaning to restore your OS anyway, I'd just do that. then there is NO reason it shouldn't work.
still, to keep his config and back-ups, he needs to get those files off his bro's PC.

his contacts and whatnot won't sync to his computer when it starts working?
no, because it sounds like he's already authorized the account on his brothers PC, since he stated that he can sync on it fine, just not on his own.

ok I'm due to reload windows anyway so I'm gonna do that. And regardless of what conputer I activated it on I should be able to sync to any computer right?
Not really. I cannot sync on my work PC because the last time I tried, it wiped out all my music and everything. I cannot remember if I lost my contacts and calander info or not...
*Edit* -It did keep my contacts and calander entries, just not notes, or anything else.

that kinda sucks. so do i have to do all my updating and music transfers on my brothers computer now since that is where i originally activated it?

yeah, that's what i was talking about. The contacts are the important things. As long as he has music on his computer, he should be ok to re-sync. Unless he really values his notes and youtube bookmarks...

Just a thought mind you. What about the Authorize and De-Authorize of a computer machine. You are allowed 5 machines and apple monitors that. Try and de-athorize the brothers, and authorize yours. Also are you and your brother using the same iTunes ACCOUNT name and password??

These problems have been sorted with the new update (either iTunes 7.6 or iPhone 1.1.3 not sure). :D
