daylight/sunlight readable??

Does anyone have any facts or guesses about the viewability of the color screen outside in the sun??? I haven't seen very many cell phone screens that are easy to see in the sun..I hope the Iphone screen is bright enough.

Good question. My Macbook Pro adjusts based upon the ambient light and so does my Blackberry so I bet the iPhone will as well.

Maybe the newly added glass layer will make it clearer even in daylight.

The iPhone does have an ambient light sensor to make it brighter and make it easier to see in the sunlight. I hope it it doen well, because it would be a shame if that beautiful screen washed out in the sun while you were trying to show iPhone off to all of your friends...

Most phones do wash out somewhat when they're outdoors. Don't expect it to be the same. This was a big negative with the critics of the Moto RAZR when it was released.

I'm saying it will be probably about the same. There's not much you can do when you're in bright sunlight.

Not sure about that. My Blackberry with a crappy plastic screen doesn't get washed out in the sunlight, so I think the iPhone will do just fine.

You are probably right...unfortunately the very bright screens (eg like on fishfinders) use alot of power. Nevertheless I find it a real pain to have to find shade to see my current phone screen outside in the sun.

Some screens are transmissive, ie light from behind. not so good in daylight,

Some are reflective, light from the front (sides) of the screen reflected back. Not as bright and vivid but Good in daylight.

Then there is a third, which combines both of the above which has the best properties of each. Transflective.

Who knows what Apple chose, but their sales pitch is that it will work good in both bright and dark enviroments due to the ambient light sensor. (Like other said)

Speaking of the RAZR, I still can't believe people are complaining about the price of the iPhone when the RAZR was $499.00 when it was released with no insurance and a contract extension...and it has about 1% of the features, and is apeice of crap. They can hardly give the damn things away now...

I paid $600 for my Treo 600, so people complaining seems silly to me.

It's still one of the top selling models. Granted it doesn't even compare to the iPhone, but it was smokin' hot in '04. I paid almost $300 for mine in early '05.

It's not just on eBay. Of course there are seven different versions of the RAZR now, so it's pretty much made for every carrier now.

I hear ya. I paid 500 for my Razr, 400 for my blackjack (just 6 months ago) and now this..... I also had to deal with a dramatic price drop on both of them after about 4-6 months. Which is why I'm planning on waiting a little while to get it. Well thats my plan anyway........

I remember in a blog one person that had a hands on with the iPhone said the screen is very bright.

It kinda depends on the weather too. on a winter's day I can see my phone's screen perfectly, while in summer I need to shade the screen.

This isn't a problem with my iPod's screen when I'm in the menus. I usually have the back light completely off since the sun lights it up fine.

Can you imagine... Years of R&D, a huge expensive marketing push, millions sold and the next morning what??? We all wake up to discover that Apple forgot to take the thing outside to see if the screen was bright enough???
