it seems like its difficult to get it in and out of the port in the ipod, because there are no little things you push to make the metal spikes on the side go in.

Am I missing something? Or is it just hard to get it out and in?

no its kinda hard to get in and out.... A solid fit. Just pull on it straight in line with the phone's jack...I mean don't bend the pins... Line it up

Mine works fine, but you could use an iPod Nano cable...those have the buttons on the sides.

I quit using the dock. Seems like half the time the battery will not charge.

Are you sure the plug is going in the right way. Always have the symbol on the connector facing out on the side the screen is on, it can't go in the other way. I have no problem plugging in my USB thing so, if it isn't facing the wrong way, maybe something is in your phone's socket.
