Home button or sleep/wake button?

I just got my iPhone and I was confused on 2 things. What is the difference between the main round button on the front vs the Sleep/Wake button all the way up on the top? When I want to acces my iPhone generally which one should be pressed or is it just common preference?

I push the home button and do the slide because I want to see the wallpaper I change everyday. It is just your own pref.

I'm a bit ham-fisted and I find in the dark I can't locate the home button so I usually use the sleep button to wake the phone in pitchblackness, and the home button at other times.

I do the same, but minus the ham-fisted part.

The way I take the phone out of my pocket already puts my left index finger right on the sleep/wake button, so I just use that.
