Recent Banishments; Holiday Crackdown

Wow, I've noticed several Bans on regular posters here yesterday evening... What in the world is going on?

What's even more amazing is that I somehow squeaked by untouched in all this madness... Some of the reactions and responses I illicit, I woulda' thought I was next!

The admin was band happy? *shrugs* I got band once for calling someone a dooshbag only to see someone else call someone one and didnt get band. So far as I see it, if your not one of the admins favs then crap on ya. Its his house but with out us its an big waste of space, not like it isnt hard to toss up a php forum and play the red queen to your guests :laugh2:

Ive not been posting much, basically because their is not much NEW or updated on the iPhone. :rolleyes:

However I've always noticed a heavy hand with the administrator. I belong to a few sailing forums and well lets just say it can get a little salty and the language can sound like a bunch of sailors on shore leave. Occasionally there are brawls, but its only an internet forum so no one gets really hurt ;)

It's a shame that people get banned on this forum for what I would call minor infractions.

Well, from what I can tell, two of the people banned were logging the same IP address, which apparently is against the rules - and I completely understand that. There are mitigating circumstances, and I am sure that it's being looked at, so it will eventually work itself out.
I will say one thing though, I did notice that 2 particular accounts that were banned, they were posting in the same threads, at almost the same time. I can only assume that they were the 2 accounts from the same IP.

There is a small problem with that particular rule though. Here at my office, there are roughly 700 people that all pass through our firewall with the same IP address. And at home, my wife and I are on a home network that only has 1 IP address to the web. She doesn't have an iPhone so there is no worry about her registering here, but if someone from work registers here and there are 2 or more accounts showing to be posting from the same IP, does that mean I would get banned too?

We don't ban people for "minor infractions". The warning system is used for that purpose and works well. Additionally, the policy and administration hasn't changed since I started running forums. When you see a banned member, remember there is always more to the story. When two people, who share the same IP mysteriously join around the same time and conduct a conversation, the flags go up. In some cases, the edited portion includes some sort of product endorsement. If left on the forums, a member could think this "endorsement" comes from two regular iPhone users. IMHO, that's one of the worst offenses.

The recent ban that is making waves was done for an assortment of offenses including:
Conversations started and continued between what I deemed the same member (IP, writing style, etc.)
Insulting a established and helpful member (MacManPro
Running up postsCertain members ran to their defense. Oddly, some of these members were guilty of abusing the forum (7 posts and 70 thank yous).

And yes it is the Internet, but that doesn't mean it's not possible to have an intelligent, knowledgeable group of members without the use of foul language.

Please don't take my post as derogatory. I moderate a paintball forum, and we keep the same rules there as well. I was just pointing out that there can be problems with 2 or more legitimate accounts coming through the same IP. However, I did look at Chris716's last couple of posts, and the other banned account was right there posting within minutes (and sometimes seconds) of each other. A bit to coincidental for me, especially when they appear to be "strokin" each others comments.
Personally, I never had a problem with them, but I am just one little fish in a big pond.

alright people many of you know that I chris716 was banned yesterday. I would like to to everyone the whole story behind this this weekend my little brother came over he had just got his iPhone and was wanting to know what sites I go to about my phone so I showed him this one he created an account ussing my CPU he didnt even start to post on his account until last night after he went back to his house but the account was created on my CPU which made it look like I have 2 usernames which I don't. I don't see why chris can't just delete the second name and just allow him to create another account from his house. Ive emailed chris several times and I've got no response at all. Also if there were comments to any users that were rude from my name chris716 I'm sorry about them as I didnt do that either it would have been my little brother whom done that I'd been a member for about a month and nothing bad has ever happened till this weekend when he came over so chris can you allow me to come back to the site please.....

In my experience you would have been banned on day two. Having been a moderator on other forums (with Hawk) I have seen the post padding attention whore posters that will come onboard and drive themselves into the center of attention and learn a few of the key things on the forum and assist a bunch of the newbs with the same old questions that the veterans are over answering. That in and of itself can be considered helpful to some degree. But then the same post padding attention whore poster starts to respond to every single thread in the forum with stuff like "Yhea thats cool" and "Man I feel for ya" and other such worthless drivel. You having an average post count of 52 per day are without a doubt a post padding attention whore and should have been banned. THEN, the addition of the multiple accounts without a doubt you would never be allowed back if I was the moderator in charge of your case. And just as Chris has, I have heard every single excuse as to why someone has multiple accounts or is listed as having multiple accounts. It does not take much to determine if accounts "compliment" each other to a degree that simply is not right. And then to add insult to injury you start a bash thread on MacManPro, do dice bud, hit the skids.

At this point, I would tell you to drop it. All you are doing is adding more reason to keep both of you off the forums.
And as far as you and Chris716 showing the same IP, chris the Admin stated that his NEW account was showing the same IP as you.

I've been board-hopping with him since the old days of PocketPCs, and I have to tell you it was a very reassuring moment for me when I had stumbled upon his posts here. It validated my iphone purchase because I wasn't sure it was worth the plunge, but knowing Tinman's history I knew he wouldn't leap blindly without careful investigation first.

I get home, come to EIC and see this! I realized all the madness was going on, but this is.. wow.

I would like to thank Chris for naming Tinman and I "helpful members" in more than one post. I try to help those in need as much as I can and I try not to post for the sake of posting. I'd also like to thank him for putting up with all this mess and dealing with it in the right way: bans.

I'd also like to recommend that none of the bans be reconsidered. The members that were banned were certainly banned for a good reason, and should not be given the right to return.

There are tow things I'd like somebody to clear up for me. First, I want to know why x99x was banned. He's certainly a very helpful member and I haven't seen any offenses from him. Perhaps there's one in a recent thread I haven't come across yet. Also, there was some talk of "banned avatars' in the thread? What's up with that?

I just went to take a look at the site Chris716 was advertising in his signature. When you go to the link he was advertising, you get a big page full of ads that has a link to the forums. There there a bunch of posts copied from EIC. The "admins" over there are trashing everyone here from me to Chris. The site has a awful layout, and I suggest that nobody registers on the site.

I started with the 1st post of this thread, all the way to the last. And all I could think was how ridiculous the whole thing is.

All forums that I am a member of have guideline and policies. Not everyone thinks those G & P's refer to them- but you're mistaken.

The banning of Chris716 may be a blessing or a curse. Right now, IMO, it feels like a blessing. While we wait for the next iPhone update, how many more threads will be dedicated to reinstating Chris716? Personally, this one wore me out. I mean seriously, he may have helped some members in the past, but his present hasnt been all that impressive at all.

How many more people are going to create user names to help plead Chris's case? Or even better, copy someone else's name and try to cause problems that way.

There is no way in Satan's paradise that I would reinstate any of the recently banned. How does one go from wanting their account DELETED to a BEGGING frenzy like this.

My goodness, when does enough really become enough? I understand that Chris (Admin) cant spend all his time banning accounts, but this entire thread has gone way out of control.

At this point, I dont know if it was Chris, his brother, or Santa Clause with multiple account coming from the same IP. All I do know is that at one time, Chris716 actually helped people....and that seems so long ago.

You know they were waiting for me to chime in before locking the post :). So here goes. I see that some people, have much to much free time. The chris716 guy, The Ghost of Sheeb or whomever he may be, just totally validated this site, while he was trying to disrupt it. All of his post's, his name switches and so forth just showed how great this site really is. (I.E.,) It's almost like the hackers that attack Microsoft because MS is so large, and the hacker will get attention. The hacker leaves the little OS maker alone, because he gains no notoriety from attacking the "Little Guy". I guess Chris716 (possibly The Ghost of Sheeb), knew he had a big audience here. He knew this is the #1 site for iPhone discussion, that is why he chose to disrupt it.

However I've always noticed a heavy hand with the administrator. I belong to a few sailing forums and well lets just say it can get a little salty and the language can sound like a bunch of sailors on shore leave.
