I know this has been said in a few post but Come On Apple!! Do I love my iPhone? YES!!!! But in showing it off to all that dont have one. And trust me I show this baby off every time I get. I dont need my entire text message or even who is texting me to come up in the middle of a demo or if someone is taking a look at my phone. I would like to know if anyone knows if there are any plans for privacy. Or a 3rd party app that would fix this?
Am I the only one that is having a problem with this?

Airplane mode?

it should be an option really. Personally I'd have it set to 'always display SMS'

Airplane mode?
That is one choice but then you miss calls and all. You also cant show them YouTube and Safari in airplane mode.

That would be so simple display SMS or not display SMS on delivery. What an easy update? Apple could "Wow" a lot of users with that simple update.
I would hope they read these message boards.

I think they also need a password to get into your texts. I hate it how you have noisy friends and they starts reading your text.

I can't quite understand this problem. Its my iPhone - full of private stuff, and it lives in my pocket. I don't hand my American Express card or Rolex around for people to admire either. Hi - You like my car? Here's the keys why don't you.
If you want to play with an iPhone - get your own, that's what I say

don't hand your phone out and then they can't read your business or take your calls...
Seems pretty simple to me. Are you really passing your iPhone around SO MUCH that you're concerned about this..?

Exactly what I have to say.
Unless you'd like to do a Restore so there's no data on there at all, deal with it.

Maybe the OP has 2 girlfriends (or boyfriends) and the texts from one may be seen from another? (BTW-I am just guessing. I am in no one accusing anyone of anything. I am just trying to think of a reason I would want to hide texts).
All my texts are so boring no one would want to read them. lol!

The best "text privacy" is not leaving your phone where prying eyes can have a field day with it.
The intensity of the title of this post- "Need Privacy For Text Messages! Now !!!!" tells me you got busted. Guess the explanation you offered regarding the text that was seen didnt get you out of hot water- Next time, be more careful! :tounge:

What EXACTLY are people texting you (about 4 average words at best) that is SO private that nobody else can see it? I'm bored. I want to know.

No no no I dont have a problem getting busted at all. I would like to not have it always display. Recently I bought a kenwood radio that allows me to use my iPhone in the car, take calls, and use maps. I dont need everyone to know when sweetie might have or not have on as we are driving.
I also have found it useful to look up things for customers as I am showing them results on safari I hate for my messages to just pop up, its not professional.
I do show off my iPhone a lot its not a credit card or a rolex. Its one of the coolest gadgets ever I would just like to see this update.

Nobody touches my iPhone but me. Want to see it, I'll hold it and show you the features. Want to see more? Head over to the Apple Store or AT&T. Sounds harsh but just my opinion.

OK I have to agree with the original poster on this. I've been busted a few times with SMS's popping up at inappropriate times. You see I'm going through a divorce and I have a young daughter I also have a girlfriend who we communicate mostly through texting. I keep my parenting and my dating life separate. So anytime I'm with my daughter I have to put my phone on airplane because a 9 year old is always very curious.
I've also been out with friends and since the damn phones ringer is so low (another problem) I usually keep it out so I can get phone calls. You would be amazed how many people will sneak a look at anything that pops up on your iPhone. First it attracts people, then it is an OPEN flat phone so its all exposed and third people are by nature curious. Ive taken to flipping the phone over which has lead to a minor scratch on the glass :(
I would It would be nice if there were a simple way to make the SMS not pop up and just have the counter in the SMS icon like there is and like email.
OK rant over.

The phone is an extension of the hand and when expecting calls or chatting with friends its in my hand or on the table. I don't put the phone back into my pocket when chatting a lot. Anyone sitting nearby can see the beginning of a message clearly and who it is from.
I see this as a problem for single people more than anyone else. If you have female friends or casual relationships, this feature is THE BIGGEST nightmare ever. I constantly have to hide my phone, turn it off, lock it, put it upside down when charging. All because of the text message preview problem. I could be out with Suzie and suddenly Tracy sends a provocative message that pops up...quick hide the phone, remove that message.
and when one of these friends or girls asks to browse something on Safari -- I'm not going to say.."No, get your own phone." They browse it and I start to sweat in agony every time. please no one text me now, please no one text me now.
I once was showing off the phone to my VP who asked about it and my buddy sent me a profane text message right at that moment. Wonderful! Thank you Apple. I know all these Apple employees must be in Cupertino having the same problem when they are sitting in meetings or using it at work.
If I was a teenager it would be a big problem too. Parents able to see messages you don't want them to see while phone is sitting out charging, etc....
Where is the next update to change this? Its software, so easy to change.

I feel the same way. There should be a security code for each area (if one elects to have their phone that secure). I am not even really hiding anything, but, still, I'd like the option of reading my texts when I want to, vs having them pop up at random.
Not sure what Airplane mode would accomplish? Doesn't that make the phone inoperable except for ipod use?
I read your posts and you really bring up valid situations that could result into problems. And at this point I don't see a solution.
When you had your old phones, did you have the same social situation with girlfriends? Did your old phone allow you to turn off texting?
I would really like to know this.

I'm using a solution that was suggested in another thread. Set up a pin code in the settings and set it up for 4 hours. If you are like me you don't go more than 4 hours without playing with the phone. The only time I have to input the code is in the morning when I wake up.

I know this is an older thread, but since I don't have an iphone, I am very surprised by this. Most phones that do have the auto-read feature have settings where you can change it. Hopefully the next iphone has a solution to this..... Many people don't have good phone etiquette. I have known people to pick up my phone and start looking through my pictures without asking. People do things like this more when they are drinking too....

Go in to General, go in to passcode lock enter a passcode (if not done already), confirm the passcode a second time. This will bring you to passcode lock screen to setup the time but also at the very bottom you can turn the SMS preview off. You can then turn off the passcode if you like or keep it on, either way the SMS preview will stay off until you turn it back on.
Explore the inner workings of the IPhone young one and you will find the answer. Actually this had come up before on EIC forums and I hope this helps.

What? You can actually do this? I'm syncing stuff now, but I'm gonna try it soon. I don't have multiple women that are looking at my phone but sometimes me and the woman will have some, less-than-family friendly SMS texts going back and forth, you know...to keep the relationship spicy! And well, I wouldn't want one of those popping up when a friend wants to play with my phone. And comon guys, this is the freakin iPhone, not a Nokia. When people see it, they wanna play with it or better yet, I wanna show it off. Anyway, thanks for this. I'm gonna try this now.

Tried it and it still pops up the SMS message. Maybe you HAVE to have security lock on. I turned it off after following your steps.

this option only works when the phone is sleep or locked. If its open surfing, watching a movie, or messing around with the phone in general the SMS still pops up
I had not tested it out so thanks. You can turn the sound off and use the no preview in passcode when it is a sleep or locked. The only way (after going thru the new 130 page IPhone pdf guide) that I can see is to put your Iphone in airplane mode though you will not be able to do the following:
 Make phone calls
 Send or receive email
 Browse the Internet
 Send or receive text messages
 Stream YouTube videos
 Get stock quotes
 Get maps locations
 Get weather reports
