so what about some of the minor things ive read people complain about. does the volume on the speaker bother anyone? the lack of a strong vibration when on silent? trying to think of other things...someone mentioned copy and paste...

Yeah I would. I've had more fun with this thing than any other device in my life (battery powered or otherwise...). The thing that tipped the scales was the jailbreaking/hacks. Even tho I've had to restore once. Love the apps, love the games. Even the process of hacking, messing it up, restoring it, and rehacking it had me giggling with delight. Is that wrong?
I've got multiple recipient sms now. Would like MMS (probably coming soon...) and I miss voice dialing. But honestly this thing is soooo much more than just a phone it's difficult to compare and those missing things are nothing compared to what else I can do with it. Hell, my beloved RPN Hewlett-Packard calculators have even been resurrected on it, and brilliantly! That's enough right there!

well i didnt buy it in the first place, i got it for free but if i had the money i would buy it again, dispite what its missing (video is top on my list). moding this thing is just so much fun. The real question is will i be able to save enough cash by time the next gen iPhone is released, then my girl can have this one cuse shes real jealous (always draining my battery playing mario bros. 3)

there's no question that God himself is disapponted about the lack of cut and paste. Speaker volume stinks too but if you mod your phone you can make it louder and add loud ringtones. This is my biggest issue. Vibrate is great though.. I usually miss the ringer but the vibrate catches me...
These are all minor inconviences compared to the incredible amount of FUN this little thing offers up.. This phone makes every other phone out on the market look like a fisher-price toy in comparison.
Your intelligence now obligates you to buy an iPhone.

Kidding..
Yes, I would buy the iPhone again. I would buy as many as my salary allows. It is, by far, the best purchase I've ever made.

Would I buy it again? Nope. I didnt have a need for the iPhone; it was just the newest play thing to have. Now that I have it, I'm bored with it.
Ok, dont stone me yet....
The display alone is breathtaking, but the lack of the most basic things found in other, sometimes much cheaper phones, is not cute to me at all.
Modding has been fun; but since there are no firmware upgrades past 1.1.2 yet, there's nothing to do that hasnt already been done i.e jailbreak.
And no... I'm not complaining- just answering the thread
Now, ask this again when V2 comes around. I might change my mind... :2cool:

I previously didn't use my smartphone (didn't have the data plan with my razr cuz the web browser wasn't worth it in my opinion and the screen was pretty small), but this has been just an awesome device for me, even though I'm stuck on edge most of the time outside my house. Still - even with edge, I can keep up with email, browse the web, use google maps, check the weather almost instantly, etc... and I haven't hacked my phone. Sure I wish Apple would get some cool updates out there (mms, copy/paste, horizontal viewing/typing of email, flash & realplayer support so I could stream audio, itunes store over edge - come on you tube can play over edge - surely the itunes store could ...). Still, even with all those things missing - it's just awesome to use - i have home movies, garage-band created music I created, handbrake-ripped movies, podscasts, custom ringtones on it, and that's just the ipod portion of it! I have a ton of iphoto albums on it so when I run into people I can show them the latest pics of the kids, the dog, etc.. and of course - it works great as a cell phone.. Now if apple would just fix that ridiculous headphone jack in version 2 ... :-).
Looking forward to the 3rd party official support as I've been unwilling to go the jail-breaked route :-)

How do I not know what I am missing out on? I own an iPhone. I just wouldn't have ever paid for it. If I was to buy any phone I would probably pick up a Blackberry Curve. Email support for the Blackberry is leaps and bounds better than the iPhone. The only thing I like about the iPhone is the web browser.

I would! I have to say though, I went through iHell in the beginning, I bought the 4g two weeks and one day before they slashed the price, so I missed getting the price difference by one day, then my 4g started crashing, they sent me a loaner, and I sent mine in, only to have them tell me they never received it, then they sent me an 8g, and when I sent the loaner back (I told them I was nervous about using fedex since the first one I sent back never arrived, wanted to just return the loaner to an Apple store, they said it didn't work that way) sent the loaner in, low and behold they said they didnt receive that either, charged my card 432 dollars! Then the remeoved the charge, and now that the dust has settled I absolutley love the iPhone! The only thing I really wish it could do is take video and send it. I feel like in the future either in a different model, or update it will.

This by far has been my favorite phone. I would absolutly buy it again in a heartbeat. I have had it for 5 months and still love it as if I got it yesterday. It remains my obsession. The volume problems, etc. have not bothered me either since modding and making my own ringtones (itunes ringtones suck, you can't hear them as well, waste of money). The ringtones I've made through Iphoneringmaker are great, The vibration is fine.
I would like MMS though, that is my only complaint. I hope that comes one day soon in an update.
But yes, go out and buy this phone, it is like no other!!!!!!!!!!

You know, there's just something about the iPhone that's appealing to all the 5 senses. It looks (sight) and feels (touch) great, the iPod (hearing) part is the best ever. Ok, so we've 3 senses, what about smell and taste? Well, do a search in this forum and you'll find more than a few people who would swear they've had those experiences too with their iPhone!
One golden rule every provider of goods and services soon learns is that if the product is good, consumers are insatiable - they will always "oliver twist". Put wheels on the product and they'll grumble it doesn't have wings - but would buy it anyway. That is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it's exactly that "give me more" attitude about consumers that helps a provider know what it needs to do to sustain or better its market share.
So what does a savvy provider do? Put all the goodies in its very first foray into the (cell/smart phone) market? Well, that would get it a lot of first time buyers, but nothing for an encore. First time buyers are great but it's the repeat customers that get your bottomline in the black. A savvy producer/provider will ekk out the goodies. Consumers will always ask for more, make them ask for more and they will buy more! Once you have an aesthetically appealing product, the rest is gravy.
So what's the nutshell of all this rambling? Yes, I will buy the v1 iPhone again. Yes, I'm a bit disappointed this version didn't come with all the basics. Yes, I totally understand why it didn't. Yes, I would be a repeat customer/consumer of the v2 iPhone.

How many of you have modded (jailbroken)? If you have not done so - are you still thrilled with it?
I just bought two (for me and the wifey) for Christmas. I am leaving behind my not-so-trusty Treo 650 on Verizon, which would be the baddest phone in the world if it did not hang occasionally, did not ignore button presses from time to time, did not crash sometimes, and all the other weird quirky things that make me want to toss it into the lake.

I continue to resist the temptation to mod my iPhone trusting that the release of its SDK in February will spur a plethora of legimate native applications as it did for the Archos PMA. That said, I am still thrilled with the iPhone "as is".

It took me about 1 month to mod my iphone and I would never go back to "as is". When I had to replace my iphone because my first one had water damage, I was bummed that it had the 1.1.2 version. I was considering leaving it "as is" because thought the downgrade/upgrade process was just too much but after 24 hours I couldn't stand it anymore and went through the process to mod again. I am happy again with my custom iphone just the way I like it.
Oh, and I gave my husband an ipod touch earlier this month and he finally let me mod that too. He is now much happier with his new 3rd party apps. He can't beleive how much more he could do with it and is very happy he let me mod it.:tounge:
after 24 hours I couldn't stand it anymore and went through the process to mod again. Can you be specific? What app or apps could you not do without?
I am debating whether or not jailbreaking will get me anything significant. I had customized the ROMs of our Treo 650s to afford 8GB SDHC cards, but there's no such thing with iPhone. My wife is addicted to solitaire on her 650, and I see there is a post-jailbreak resident solitaire game she may have to have.
I think it is really unfortunate that Apple chose to so completely hobble this thing. It has such potential. I hope the rumors of the upcoming SDK are well founded. Come on February! :2cool:

How many of you have modded (jailbroken)? If you have not done so - are you still thrilled with it?
now, THAT is the question.
I have modded out the wazoo since week 2 of owning my phone.
Do you suppose it will ever be the case that a new Apple firmware upgrade will not be loadable onto a modded phone? In other words, is there a significant downside to modding?
Each new firmware update will revert a phone back to a "factory" state, and there will most likely be at least some measure in it to prevent modification again.
The 1.1.1 update Bricked some phones that were mod'd, but mostly only the unlocked phones.
To answer the OP's question, Yes I would buy it again, as I am in love with the design and interface of the iPhone. But, would probably still be in the same place about Apple and the updates. The updates are nothing more than little patches so far, and the iPhone is still missing some basic smartphone features some 6 months later. 1.1.1 might be the closest thing to a true update, but I think I can speak for a large numer of people that are expecting a UPDATE like Apple hints at everytime someone asks them about missing features like copy/paste, MMS, or multiple TEXT.

there will always be avenues to "virginize" (restore your phone to factory state) before updating if you're worried about your mods screwing with things.
And also keep in mind that apple can never FORCE update your phone. You will be perfectly fine if you just never press those "update" or "restore" buttons in iTunes.

I have had mine since the first day and I do have the phone modded. I however would not buy it again if I was faced with the situation. The reality is that it is not a good phone as far as reception goes. Maybe I have a bad phone, but I can say with 100% certainty that having full signal strength means jack as far as reliability goes. I am astounded at how many calls drop or one of us cannot hear the other (I will quickly check and see that I have full signal strength).

It breaks my heart to say this, but I would NOT buy it again given the chance.
I have been on Vodafone in the UK for nearly a decade and I didn't realise how good their reception coverage is, because It simply always had a reception. With my iPhone, on 02 I cant get a reception in my own house, nor in my office. And while driving around town it's crackly and cuts in and out at random. The 02 coverage here is absolutely shocking and I'm going to have to buy a PAYG phone to carry around with me because of this.
WiFi is hopeless too, I can hardly ever get a connection which isn't password protected, and trying to browse the web on EDGE makes me want to punch myself in the f'king neck.
They would have been better just leaving off the camera as it's useless.
Not being able to receive MMS messages is ridiculous on a modern phone like this. My sister sent a video clip of my new born nephew to all our family, and I was the only one who couldn't view it! Most of them are on decrepit old phones that cost them nothing, while I'm trying to show off my new £300 super gadget.
WTF are they playing at not making it Flash enabled??
No "back" button - If I arse something up as I'm flicking through apps and pages why do I have to go all the way back to the home page and start from scratch?
No Hotmail option? Come on guys, I know Microsoft are bell ends, but lots of us still use Hotmail.
Is copy and paste such a difficult thing to program in?
Why can't I send a Merry Christmas message to 15 of my friends at once?
However, the overall feel of the phone is excellent, and I believe over time it will become the perfect hand held device, I just wish I'd waited.

wow all the complainers... It might be geographic, however. My edge in Savannah is excellent. AT&T coverage is excellent. All the AT&T customer service people speak English, thank God. I lovemodding the phone.... Haven't been able to mod a phone this much since the Ipaq.
I guess the rest of you need a Jitterbug since the iPhone seems to be too much for you...
Must be a Georgia thing, because I too get great reception here in the ATL. But I also take my phone everywhere, and haven't had a problem in NYC (a little weak in Long Island inside where I was staying, but in NYC it was 100%)
I can say that in general, AT&T has superb coverage. I've been to the metro areas of the following and I think of all the places I've been, I've only lost signal once.
Connecticut - the whole state.
Mass- Springfield and Wilbraham (one of the oldest towns in America, and where I grew up)
Washington DC metro area
San Fransico
Oakland
San Diego
Chicago
Tampa
Orlando
and for everything in between cities located in the SE.
Like I said, there has only been one time I can recall that I lost a call due to poor coverage, and I think that was about an hour south of Oakland.
