One reason is because of the network specific enhancments, like visual voicemail.

But also, given the US cell market, it's possible that non of the major carriers were willing to give in to some of their demands, and to make it a flagship phone, unless Apple agreed to an exclusivity agreement.

Thats what I thought. Why not just sell it to all as an independent phone maker. Maybe they got a TON of cash for the 5 year blanket.
