Ok here is how I create Ring tones by using Itunes only.
1. Select song frong fron itunes library that is a mp3.
2. Right click and convert selection to ACC
3. Right click new acc file in itunes and "Get Info"
4. Choose Options tab and change start and stop times to 0 and 30 seconds. (check boxes)
5. Right click and convert selection to ACC again (new song is created but only 30 sec)
6. Right click new acc song and select "show in Windows Explorer"
7. Seclect properties and change .m4a to .m4r

and probably a known fact, but you can set the times in the song to anywhere you want...not necessarily 0 and 30 seconds..I have some that start a minute into the song

Also worth noting, though I haven't tried it myself, is that apparently there is no real need to limit it to 30 seconds. Others have reported successfully creating and syncing longer ringtones.

It doesn't actually have to be an MP3. Basically, if it's in your iTunes library at all, you can convert it to AAC. It could be a WAV, AIFF, etc. no difference.

Ok tried that and now can't find where to change from .m4a to m4r. Files in Windoes say mpeg 4. Told you I'm new.....

Follow the steps carefully. Assuming you've made your ~30sec clip, you have to convert the clip into AAC first in Itunes, then right-click THE NEW FILE that iTunes created (right click it IN iTunes) and select "show in Windows Explorer". THEN you rename THIS file (in Explorer) ... It should be an *.m4a file... change it to *.m4r and double click it right there. It should be added to your ringtone folder (in iTunes).

Great post! Thanks. One question though.
Is there a way to change the aac bitrate higher? When i play back the aac version, the volume comes out lower than the original... :(
I think I just need to change the bitrate.

I think I just need to change the bitrate.
Open itunes, Go to edit -> prefrences then go to the advanced tab then the important tab then look for setting and scroll to customize.

That's because you're right-clicking on the source file. After you convert to AAC in Itunes, there will be another file with the exact same name as the original in the Itunes list, use THAT.

I was only able to make the ringtones a max of 43 seconds long. Not sure if iTunes only allows a certain size or a certain length.
Anyone have any idea?

Use Audacity. It's free and easy to use:

I encode to 64 Kbps mono for ringtones. It makes tiny files and higher rez really doesn't sound much better through the built-in speakers anyway. I haven't tested yet, but I'm willing to bet the varying reports for ringtone length means it has more to do with fie size. I'll test it out a bit later.

Make sure you're using Itunes 7.5 with a version 1.1.2 Iphone.

You have to go into Itunes preferences, Advanced, Importing tab... select the AAC encoder at whatever bitrate you want. After that, you will see the AAC option when you right click a file.
Someone really needs to make a comprehensive FAQ sticky for this topic...

OK, I followed the above instructions, but how do you change *.m4a file... to *.m4r? I right clicked properties in explorer and now what do I do. I did not see the option to change.
Thanks,

aazar, similar to renaming a file. just right click, and rename. at the end, it'll say .m4a at the end, just change that to .m4r.

OK, I followed all the steps for making the ringtone. I made the song within 30 seconds or whatever and now I'm having trouble converting it into a .m4r file. I RENAMED it songtitle.m4r and it's not showing up in my ringtone folder. I have iTunes 7.6. Does that have anything to do with it?

You can use some sort of editing software to whittle the song down to the clip you want before converting it to AAC. I use MPT, but you might want to try audacity.

I've been trying to test this out too. I use WavePad to edit my songs and change their bitrate and such. It allows me to choose: stereo, joint, force, or mono. I tried mono like you said and it shows up in itunes fine but my iphone won't show it. I can only get it to work on the other three. What is the best recommened bit rate and channel?

What's the big deal with upgrading to a newer firmware? For a while there wasn't even an option of any kind to add custom ringtones with standard firmware. It was the same way with early RAZR phones. When Cingular first introduced them in the US, they didn't come from the factory with video recording. The phone had to be completely hacked to add that feature up until T-Mobile started selling them 10 months later. Finally, Cingular added the feature when they saw the firmware for the T-moBILE VERSIONS.

When I bought my iPhone it had SW version 1.1.3(if that matters),I created about eight ringtones using the same procedure you are talking about, but when I dragged them to my ringtone folder on my phone through iTunes it showed one of the eight tones on my phone eight times,in short I can only put one home made ringtone on my phone at a time. WTF!
ColsTiger

I double checked this procedure and it works fine with 1.1.4. If you just follow the steps correctly, you should not have any problem.
