WIFI yes. AT&T EDGE network NO. Because AT&T blocks VOip packets on their EDGE network.

here is the 'article'
Internet Brands Developer Blog suggests that the Apple iPhone could make unlimited free calls over WiFi/IP to people in the Address Book.
The site suggests using a SIP address, which looks just like an email address, to make calls over the internet rather than the cellular network.
<snip>
Yes, it will happen eventually. Probably a few years away before the carriers allow it though. Besides for iPhone you would need a VoIP client that runs in java. Does anyone know of one?

I really hope this happens sooner rather than later. Why does the iPhone need a VoIP client written in Java? I don't think this is years away.

Right, not the wireless carriers, but while on WiFi. I neglected to make that clarification myself. :smile:

How else are you going to get the client into the phone? The only way I know of right now would be a java client hosted on a web page. There is no other way to install or even write software for the iPhone.
I got another $20 that says that Apple/AT&T have somewhow blocked this feature from working. Don't expect VoIP calls anytime soon. Talk about killing your business model.

The iPhone doesn't have Java.

I missed that you were talking about 3rd party. Apple could do this. I also suspect 3rd party will soon be able to create non-web apps.

Not if a big portion of the business model is $40/mo for 2 years. I don't think they care what you do as long as they get their portion.

Right. He's talking about server-side Java from a web page.
