Picture= 2mb
Song= 5mb
Movie= 1gb
TV Shows (30min)= 250mb
But all of that varies based on encoding and other factors. I think those numbers are fairly acurate for buying from iTunes.

if you can afford it get the 8GB.
A lot will depend on how you encode the files. You can have a picture at 200K if you save it as a low quality jpeg. If you take the same picture as raw format right out of your camera it may be 5 or 10MB big. Same with MP3s a song encoded at 64 bit will be a hell of a lot smaller than one at 128bit.

There is no definite answer that can be provided for this question. The # of factors involved in this, go far beyond whether or not the file is a "Song or Picture".

i'm not sure if this has been addressed, but does anyone know how much memory the OS and included apps are going to eat up? is it possible that a 4GB iphone would actually only have 3GB of storage?

It may not be a great answer, but it is true. I have some songs that are 20 minutes long, so I can't just go by the term "song". Generally Apple says a 1 Gig Shuffle holds 250 songs, so you can sort of go from there as far as music.

if you were actually laughing out loud at your desk in your cubicle somewhere while you typed that, thats kinda sad.
and btw, i specifically said, and even titled the post, "typical file sizes"... so i was looking for a simple, general answer. i expected that anyone with any common sense who read the post would assume that i knew there were other factors that come into play.
just lighten up.

Thx for the backup. I think you need to have a basic understanding of file formats, MP3 encoding parameters, file length, etc.
And that's just for the audio.
If you wanna talk video, take all the above, and add another 3 or 4 parameters to understand and decipher.
You give us some of this basic info, and then we can give you a breakdown on the # of "pictures", "songs", "movies" and "shows" you can store on your iPhone.

Once again, typical is not typical for everyone. You want a typical answer? Use the iPod nano for your measurements. 4g = 1000 songs. 8g = 2000 songs.
I have songs that are 29 minutes long, in my collection. I encode all my MP3s at 312kbps/sec.
Do you?

A 2MB picture? You're a fool if you put a 2MB picture on your iPhone.

2 Megs for a picture?
Why would you want a 3,000 x 3,000 pixel picture on the iphone screen?
Sure you could zoom in.. But 2megs...
Forgot where, but it was stated that the OS takes up less than 500 megs.
But with the rest of the apps and whatnot.. I'm shooting at 700megs.

The real question is how quickly do you want to run out of space... 6 months down the road or 8? ;)

Hey Lenny,
Keep in mind when making your decision that there is no way to add or upgrade, so which ever unit you purchase you will be stuck with until you purchase a whole new unit. Plus the fact that the iPhone OSX is utilizing a portion of your flash for the OS (And additional add-on programs, and web browser cache, etc etc) the decision of which to buy becomes a no-brainer for me. I hope this helps with your decision! Wish me luck on getting on on the 29th, I'll be standing in line for hours just to get one of these babies! Oh, and if they are out of the 8gb model and only have 4gb ones left, I'll probably pass and try my luck online.
Good Luck to Everyone!

is it possible that maybe apple puts osx in there, puts all the widgets and other apps, then on top of that they promise 4 or 8gigs of guaranteed free space????

Hmm, doubtful just because it would save on physical space taken up by drives, but then again, it would also make it easier to "default" all settings and such, if the OS is stored elsewhere.... like, "FORMAT", only the OS and apps would remain.. all custom-installed aftermarket stuff would be deleted. (3rd party apps, music, pics, etc.)
