View Full Version : ATT Early Cancellation Fee

Hello I literally cannot stand ATT, they are overpriced, customer service sucks, and the reception is poor in many locations.
I'm in a 2 year contract and was wondering if anyone knew what the fee for early termination is. If it is pro-rated, does anyone know how it is calculated.
Thanks in advance

Why trust an answer from someone here, I'd just call or go to the AT&T site and get an accurate answer. Sometimes you can be successful getting it reduced or waived if you have a viable reason for termination.

You also have 30 days to return it, just have to pay for the actual time used...if you haven't already passed that point

I spent hours on the phone with ATT customer support and I don't want to spend any more time on the phone with them.
ATT reducing fees? Yea right, they wont do that regardless of the issues you have.

I asked once before and they said the cancellation fee is $75 which sounds really cheap to me.
As pointed out Bove, AT&T has prorated early termination fees so you have to call them to find out how much yours would be.

this is copied straight from the web site at att.....
Service Cancellation
You may cancel service within 30 days from the activation date to avoid the early termination fee of $175.
You will be responsible for all applicable usage fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges or other charges through the termination date.
If you cancel service within the return period but do not return the equipment within the return period or if equipment is not returned in like-new condition, you may be charged the full retail price of the equipment.
If you paid a security deposit, it will take 1 to 2 billing cycles to process the return of the security deposit. The charges for service used on the account before the service termination date will be applied against the security deposit.

why would you say this??? this is a community that works mostly on trust that the answers to the questions asked are accurate, other wise what would be the point of the site to begin with????

Agreed, any call to ATT is like calling a 3 year old for advice. They are very unorganized over there. I wish there was a 75$ cancellation fee! Usual fees are within the ranges of 175$ to 225$. Good luck trying to contend with ATT.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that the answers given here are routinely innacurate, in fact, my experience is just the opposite. But the OPs question is related to his specific AT&T account, and only he and AT&T can determine what exactly he will have to pay. This is just one of those questions that we see over and over that have readily available answers from the SOURCE, as well as published information. And the list of answers given bears me out as there have been several different numbers given. Bottom line is, the customer needs to get with AT&T and come to an agreement.
I concede that my use of the phrase 'why TRUST an answer from someone here' wasn't a good choice. I should have said something like 'no one here can accurately tell you what kind of termination deal you will get with AT&T because of a number of variables'. I love this forum :laugh2:
I just had to chime in and say I hate these termination fees (opposed to those that love them:tounge:) and is one of the main reason's i do not yet own an iphone. Good Job T-Mobile for locking me in 'till next semptember!
4 lines+$200 cancellation fee each=$800....So if I wanted to get an iphone now it would probably range in the $1500 and up range for me and my family to all switch over and buy new phones and activate and yadda yadda yadda....
That's ok though, I've been saving up some cold hard cash and will continue to do so until september 08, by the time that rolls around I'll be able to pimp my iphone out with whatever accessories I want, and possibly it will be a new model all together (more expensive, but I'll have it covered)!
Awww crap, I forgot I can't pay cash for this thing! LoL!:tounge:

What's your problem? If you're trying to say that this site knows more about what's going on with AT&T than AT&T does, then you have NO clue. Why not call AT&T? Anyone with a brain could come to that conclusion. Except you, apparently...:frown:

you are kidding me right??? i mean you really are right,, that was soposed to be a happy face and not a frown.
First off who is to say that there are not many ATT employees that are members here that could have answered his question.
second this site would not know more about att then att does, becouse it it a site, the site knows nothing, the wonderful people of this site know stuff, so yea that is that.
third, many would argue that att does not know att, they are all screwed you cant get a straight answer form them any time that you call or visit the store.
there are many questions that are asked on here that can be avoided by using the search or simply calling apple or att but if we all did that then we'd be simply entrained by the, "what is your favorite NES game?" or the "how my iphone saved my ass" threads .
and my conclusion is that i have quite the brain.... :laugh2:

I agree, it's just like calling Apple support when I got the Blue Screen of Death after my Leopard Upgrade on a 1 month old MacBook Pro. The "genius" that answered the phone says that there is no such thing. So I sent him a picture in an email of my Mac, making sure to show the keyboard and entire computer not just the screen. Suddenly he offered to escalate the call. To make a very long story short, my MBP has been tossed in the corner until Apples Geniuses, can come up with a fix.
Oh well it was only money.
And my iPhone still dials out, flippin amazing!

Wow, what a mess. Hey, when it comes right down to it, the ONLY place he can get an accurate answer for his situation is to call AT&T and ask. No answer given here means diddly because it is AT&T that is going to demand the fee (or not demand it or reduce it or...), and they will only tell him if and when he calls THEM. I wasn't trying to make and comment on the contributors here on the forum. BTW, appreciate your comments OJ.

O my goodness what a mess. Sorry to stir up all this flak. I agree with you, however. And when it comes down to it, AT&T is the bottom line for an answer. Not tinman or any other poster on this forum can answer these types of questions with ANY sort of validity. (Sorry tinman, only using you as an example since you are a TOP poster here.)

Verizon or Sprint are no better - I had them both and they are all greedy dogs - the service depends on where you live - I had verizon for years and just switched when the iphone came out - I don't see any difference in reception here

Oh wow! Way to blow this post out of proportion, nice job!
Firstly I will never call ATT again...ever, I have spent endless hours on the phone with them, and dealt with too much stupidity. It literally made me so stressed out, and no one should ever have to go through that with a company they pay there hard earned bucks to.
Secondly what do you mean no one on the forums can answer this post?
Do you understand what pro-rating is? If someone was able to tell me what they paid for their cancellation fee on a single phone, and how many months they had left in their contract I could easily calculate my cancellation fee.
Also if this subject was SO sensitive I would have gone to the ATT store. However it wasn't a sensitive question at all because no matter what I'm canceling my service with ATT, this was a question of mere curiosity.
Anyways life is too short to waste your time on posts like this, we don't need all this negativity, if everyone approached posts with positivity it would save a lot of wasted time in reading this junk.
I propose that the mods create an "idiot section" where instead of answering peoples posts with respect and with the intention of helping them they can just bring up every negative response possible, do little if any research, and have complete disregard for the OP's question. That way you guys can stay out of the forums where we actually try to assist others, offer inisght, share knowledge, ect.
Anyways to those that tried to help, thank you. However I will just cancel my contract and then I will surely be able to find out the fee I pay :laugh2:

If you call and ***** long enough, they will waive the fee. My mom did it with AT&T a few weeks ago. She hated her crappy reception, so she told them so. if you have a valid reason for wanting to cancel, it is like any other company you are dissatisfied with. If you get a crappy hair cut, you wouldn't pay for it, right? My mom told them that she was getting an insane amount of dropped calls, and that they are supposed to have the fewest dropped calls of any carrier.

AT&T has a new cancellation policy; they prorate the cancellation fees based on how much time is left on your contract.
If the fee is $175 and you have a 2 year contract that is halfway finished, then the cancellation fee would be $87.50 ($175.00/2). If you're a year and a half into it, the cancellation fee would be $43.75.

Thanks, thats the kind of answer the OP was looking for.
I've learned with ATT that I (in caps) know more about ATT then MOST of the employees. Half of them are reading from a manual, and if you have to deal with someone for more then a few minutes then call back, and repeat the process. I ended up getting the Treo 750 for 50 bucks right when it came out after calling back a few times. The don't hire the brightest people all the time, but they do have some good people working there.

Now thats the answer I was looking for! All the rest of this non sense could have been avoided if only you came sooner!
Anyways, apparently Verizon has some new phones in the works, so I will wait for them to be released before I cancel, and hell the longer I wait, the cheaper the cancellation fee, so that works for me.:laugh2:

Won't you need to call or contact them at some point to ask to get out of the contract? And won't they then tell you how much it will cost you?
I think its great that several folks have offered what they think AT&T will say; some think they will pro-rate your remaining contract, some think you may get out of it all together if you complain enough, and some think it is a set fee. All three answers are helpful feedback, but unfortunately you won't know which is going to happen in your case until you contact AT&T.

And to answer your question, no I will not need to call ATT, I wouldn't bother calling and complaining, like I said I will NEVER call them again, and I do not say that lightly.
When I do cancel I will be porting my number over to Verizon which will require absolutely no contact with ATT, I simply port my number over and my ATT account is canceled.
Now this post is dead, done, over, info on canceling has been taken care of thanks to some of the few helpful people on these forums, and no thanks to those driven by an ego to attempt to make someone look stupid. So how about no more posts and we all move on with life :laugh2:

Please, go back and re-read all of my posts. Nothing in any of them is negative and I have not resorted to any personal attacks or attempts to make anyone look stupid. Everything I have posted relates to my contention that only AT&T can give you a correct answer to your question.
In my last post I asked if you wouldn't have to contact AT&T, and I didn't do it to make you feel stupid, but to find out if you had another alternative that I wasn't considering. Seems you do and I'm now I now know how you are going to do it.

Having said all that, if it were me, I would want to know from them what they intended to charge before I ported my number. That way I could verify that they didn't screw me when with a surprise when the final bill comes. From reading your messages, you don't trust AT&T any more than I do .

Within my company, we use AT&T, Verizon and Sprint/Nextel. All of them fall short of decent customer service. If everyone goes in with the understanding that the person on the other end has a script to follow and most (not all) don't have any way to operate outside of that, things would go a lot smoother regardless of carrier. To think that Verizon or T-Mobile are that much better than AT&T is shortsighted at best. My experience with Bellsouth/Cingular/AT&T has been fine. I recognize the shortcomings and work within that limitation. Coverage for me has been fine. That is not true for everyone as seen here. I, personally, do not trust any large corporation. But, that starts at the top. Those that do the real work don't make enough money to deserve the venom that the consumers put on them. Do I work in customer service? No, I have been in the restaurant business, in the past and seen how badly people get treated because of "expectations. Customer service is no different, except you can't put a face to the person like the restaurant. If someone doesn't like AT&T, that's fine, leave. That is your choice. Pay the penalty that was agreed to when the service started and move on. I have the same feelings about the cable operator that serves our area. I don't have an out because of where I live. That's ok. I don't take it out on the CSR or the tech that has to come out and work on the box and cable. It isn't their fault.
That's my 2 cents worth on this topic.

Going from FIRST HAND experience only. I had Verizon for 4 years, nearly flawless in every aspect. Amazing reception, great customer service (both on phone and in store), and easy phone activation, and switching. Also much cheaper then ATT.
I have been with ATT for three months, horrible customer service (in store and on phone) reception is good in some places, but signals seem weak and spotty. It took them one week to figure out how to activate my iPhone.
Corporate companies in general are not going to offer you the customer service you want, but it doesn't mean they are all just as bad as one another. Verizon has excelled all my expectations thus far.

Excuse my frustration, just a lot of pointless posts here, and no offense to you, but your post really didn't help, and when I specifically say I will not be calling ATT again, why question that. I think you could have re-worded your post if your only intention was to help, but oh well it doesn't really matter.
Anyways hopefully the mods can nuke this post, it really has about two postings of any use.
