Longer Guide (older method, but still works)
(Deprecated as of 10/13/2007 10 AM PDT.)
Downloads needed:
Jailbreak kit:
http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/1.1.1-jailbreak.zip
DLLs:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62133418/iTunesMobileDevice.zip.html
SSH kit:
http://devices.natetrue.com/iphone/sshkit.zip
iBrickr 0.9 (only needed to get its copy of iphoneinterface.exe:
http://ibrickr.com/downloads/ibrickr_v0.91.zip
BSD World:
http://iphone.natetrue.com/BSD_Base-2.0.tar.gz (http://iphone.natetrue.com/BSD_Base-2.0.tar.gz)
http://iphone.natetrue.com/BSD_Extra-2.1.tar.gz (http://iphone.natetrue.com/BSD_Extra-2.1.tar.gz)
Installer:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62116904/Installer.zip.html
Extract each of the above downloads into a separate folder. Place iphoneinterface.exe from iBrickr folder into sshkit folder, overwriting the copy already there. Place the two DLLs within the iTunesMobileDevice folder into both the Jailbreak kit folder (1.1.1-jailbreak) and the sshkit folder.
You will also need WinSCP installed on your PC. Get it here:
http://winscp.net/eng/download.php (http://winscp.net/eng/download.php)
Phase I (Jailbreak)
1.) Restore or update to 1.1.1 using iTunes. No need to downgrade to 1.0.2.
2.) Close iTunes after successfully restoring to 1.1.1. When iTunes asks if you would like to restore your settings from backup, let it (unless you want to clear out all of your settings, SMS messages, call history, etc.).
3.) Visit the tiff exploit page on the iPhone:
http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com (http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com/)
(Do NOT go here unless you are jailbreaking 1.1.1!)
This should crash Mobile Safari. In fact this is what is supposed to happen. If it doesn’t try it again.
4.) Run iphuc-jailbreak.exe (inside the 1.1.1-jailbreak folder) on your PC and enter the following command:
putjailbreak rdisk0s1 /dev/rdisk0s1
5.) Re-start iPhone (turned it off then back on).
6.) Run iphuc-jailbreak.exe again to verify read-write access using the following command:
getfile /etc/fstab fstab
This copies fstab to the folder that iphuc-jailbreak.exe is in. Open fstab in Notepad and see if looks like below (not necessarily on two lines—that is OK):
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1
/dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw,noexec 0 2
If yours looks like this then read-write access is in place. Your iPhone is out of jail!
Phase II (Install SSH on iPhone)
1.) Run sshify-windows.bat from the sshkit folder. Follow carefully the instructions to restart iPhone.
2.) Copy com.apple.update.plist from the sshkit folder to the jailbreak kit folder on your PC.
3.) Run iphoneinterface.exe (inside the sshkit folder) and enter the following:
putfile /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.update.plist
4.) Restart iPhone again.
Phase III (Connect to iPhone via WinSCP)
1.) Make sure your iPhone is connected to your WiFi network. You will need its IP address, which can be found in Settings-->WiFi. Tap “>” next to your WiFi network to see your iPhone’s IP address. Leave your iPhone connected to a power source.
2.) If you have ever used WinSCP with your iPhone before open WinSCP click Tools, Cleanup, Un/check all, and then click OK. This will clear out any remnants of earlier connections. If you have never used WinSCP with your iPhone before, just proceed to step 3.
3.) In WinSCP click the New button to set up a new connection. Enter your iPhone’s IP address in Hostname (leave port at 22). Enter user name of root and password of alpine. Leave private key file blank, but make sure file protocol is SCP. Click Save to save the connection.
4.) Double-click the saved connection to connect.
5.) You might get an error message the first time you try to connect. Try again and it should work (don’t worry about a Groups message).
6.) Navigate to the root (“/”) folder on your iPhone using WinSCP. Do this by double-clicking the folder icon with two dots in it (the first one) in the right pane of WinSCP. When you see the folders Applications, bin, cores, etc., you are there. Leave WinSCP open.
Phase IV (BSD World, Springboard Patch, Symlink Removal)
1.) Open the BSD_Base-2.0 folder. Once inside double-click the BSD_Base folder. You should see bin, lib, sbin, and usr folders.
2.) Drag and drop the folders into the right pane of WinSCP (which should be at the root folder of the iPhone). DO NOT drop onto an existing folder—drop onto the bottom of the pane, or anywhere—just don’t drop onto an existing folder. When WinSCP asks if you want to replace a folder, agree to it. It will ask several times.
3.) Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the bin and usr folders contained in the BSD_Extra-2.1 folder.
4.) In WinSCP navigate to the /usr/bin folder.
5.) Drag and drop springpatch from the Jailbreak toolkit folder to the /usr/bin folder.
6.) In WinSCP open the /bin folder and select all files (Ctrl-A).
7.) Press F9 and the properties window opens. In the Octal field enter 0755. Click OK.
8.) Repeat step 6 for the /lib/sa, /sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin folders.
9.) BSD World is now installed (leave WinSCP open).
10.) In WinSCP click the terminal icon (or go to CommandsàOpen Terminal). This opens the terminal window.
11.) In the Enter Command box enter:
rm /var/root/Media
12.) In the Enter Command box enter:
mv /var/root/Mediaold /var/root/Media
13.) In the Enter Command box enter:
springpatch
Phase V (Finish Up)
1.) Navigate to /Applications on the iPhone using WinSCP.
2.) Drag and drop the Installer.app folder into /Applications on the iPhone. Be careful not to drop onto an existing folder.
3.) Open the /Applications/Installer.app in WinSCP.
4.) Press Ctrl-A to select all files, F9 to bring up properties, and enter 0755 in the Octal field.
5.) Repeat step 4 for the /Applications/Installer.app/InstallerPlugin.webplugin folder.
6.) Restart the iPhone (last time!).
7.) Start iTunes and sync. You might have to restore your settings again, but you will not revert back to a virgin 1.1.1.

Download them here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62133418/iTunesMobileDevice.zip.html
Place the two DLLs within the above download into both the Jailbreak kit folder (1.1.1-jailbreak) and the sshkit folder.
I have updated the guide to include this information.
Good luck!

LOL that's why I quoted "easy." And at least the jailbreak part is easy--and even installing SSH on the iPhone. And once you get to that point you are on your way.
I should note that I am actually glad now that I had to restore my already jailbroken 1.1.1 iPhone. It looks like I've gained about 325 MB of space. The "Other" category in iTunes used to show up as 275 MB. Now it shows as 48 MB--and all my apps are installed. And it's not like iTunes was lieing, that space was not available. Before re-jailbreaking I had only 230 MB free, now I have 558 MB free. Plus I am glad any old crap is now gone (I assume there were traces of stuff I didn't use, or didn't want still hanging around--and again, I have all my apps installed now).

Hi quick question..
I got my phone yesterday.. I did the field test mode thing and my phone is running version 04.01.13_G which means it's already got 1.1.1 firmware.
The nifty diagram on Entong's sticky thread "before buying iphone read this first (http://www.everythingiphone.com/forum/iphone-modifications/before-buying-iphone-read-this-first-13674.html)" says that I am screwed.
Your jailbreak 1.1.1 post is newer; does this method unlock my virgin 1.1.1 phone?
Can you point me towards a method to unlock my phone? I saw some threads about TurboSim and SuperSim but it looks like supply is low.
I want to use my Sim cards for T-mobile Dallas Tx and (MTS or Beeline) in Moscow, (neither sim card says N3 on it.
Huge thanks for anyone who answers my noob questions!

The steps outlined in this guide are for jailbreaking (freeing the files ystem to allow third-party apps and mods).
While it wouldn't hurt you to use this guide it won't unlock your iPhone to use with other carriers. However, there has just been several developments that DO allow a 1.1.1 iPhone to be unlocked (without the need for TurboSIM).
See here for an example (though I would not unlock just yet--I would wait till it is perfected):

If you follow the guide to completion you will have one new icon: Installer. Since you already have Installer you don't need AppTap.

Thanks a lot for posting this Tinman. If I screw up, restoring still works correct?
Also, I can't get the site to crash my phone, only my browser.

Thanks for the tut Mike.
I had followed an alternate that was much more cumbersome. For some reason my phone hung at the apple logo when rebooting after an App install (don't remember which). Anyway, yours is much more streamline and worked great for me with exception for the SSH install. I kept getting an error; file 0 near the last script line?
I'm sure there's an easy fix, but I used an alternate SSH file http://devices.natetrue.com/iphone/sshkit.zip
This required iphone interface from 'the latest iBrickr' to be placed in the SSH folder.
Another issue some folks may come across is placement of the phonedmg file. I originally saved mine on an external drive. From that location I was unable to run the iphuc-jailbreak.exe?? For some reason it would only work from my C:
A bit off post, do you know how to force iTunes to hold a recent backup? My most recent that was held is ~60 days old, and was done while Outlook calendar was still visible even though the phone had been synced multiple times since??
Hope this helps some others; and thanks again, it was nice not to have to downgrade.

XP. What I pasted is all I see. There is no 'any key to continue'. The next step that refers to the com.apple.update.plist I saw, and there is a file named com.apple.update.plist.chmod in the sshkit directory.

My new problem is connecting via WinSCP. It says choose 'SHP', but my only protocol options are SFTP, SCP, and FTP. I tried SCP and it gives me connection refused. Did I grab the wrong version of WinSCP? I have 4.04.

I did a quick Net search for SHP as my WinSCP doesn't have this protocol either and what should I find? A website called Iphoneking has posted Mike's instructions as one of their content entries:
http://iphoneking.info/guide-easy-jailbreak-111-without-restoring-to-102-windows.html
Unless thats your site Mike, I'd ask this guy for part of the traffic money he's recieving. A Google query for WinSCP SHP had him listed at the top, which is impressive for an organic listing.
So yeah, I ain't doin' a thing until I find out what ver iTunes I need and whats the deal with SHP?

His guide is for 1.1.1 users only. I believe there is another tutorial out there for upgrading to a jailbroken 1.1.1 thats different. If you want to follow this tutorial, you will have to restore your phone (I assume you're 1.0.2 jailbroken) and upgrade to 1.1.1 then start.

Thanks for that info, I wasn't aware of it, I've been very apprehensive towards any updates that aren't as simple as AppTapp.
That said I have been following Mike's modding adventures over the years, not limited to the iphone, and because this has worked for him I feel more confident following these instructions.
If I were perhaps a little more confident in my own technical ablities I'd much rather take the 1.0.2 -> Pre-Jailbroken 1.1.1 in all honesty :)

To all those that are getting Connection Refused when you first try to connect via WinSCP:
Go through the ssh installer (Phase II) steps again. This basically means it did not install right the first time. Make sure you get all your restarts in there, including the one after you putfile from iphoneinterface.exe. You will not hurt anything by trying more than once, but each time you try again you will have to repeat all the restarts AND the putfile.

You missed a step with the Octal values, go back and redo that step, because the command rm does not have the permissions it needs to do what you're asking it, and that error is basically saying just that in a not so friendly way.

Now, a question of my own, I'm up and running in a jailbroken 1.1.1 with NES and Installer on board. What I'm confused on is some apps that I want to install require the BSD subsystem, is that separate to BSDWorld which we just used? I'm not sure what to do here, install BSD subsystem or not?
Thanks
Yea, a few apps (Mobile Finder in particular) demand BSD subsystem. Rather than install that--which I feared would overwrite the newer BSD world--I installed those apps manually (i.e., like Installer was installed). Alternately, you could install

Thanks for the Heads-Up Mike, I think I have enough info to get going, exept, do I need to also update my iTunes for 1.1.1? I've kept it outdated for the Ringtones.
Thanks again, btw did you happen to see this in my ther post?
Yea I saw it. Weird that that site grabbed the guide once it was first released--I assume it was a bot (maybe not, since it doesn't list the source as me--or even that they copied it from here). Anyhoo, that site is now out of date so I just hope it doesn't do more harm than good.

I have already installed a working--though alpha--version of Summerboard. And customize is able to work too (haven't gotten to that yet). This is a screenshot of my 1.1.1 iPhone with Summerboard installed:

You missed a step with the Octal values, go back and redo that step, because the command rm does not have the permissions it needs to do what you're asking it, and that error is basically saying just that in a not so friendly way.
Thanks for this - I had same errors and had stupidly missed a whole folder out on the Octal values steps. Now looking much better. Tinman - thanks for the superb Guide!

install... hic!
Too much brew?
No probs, I think I've got this sorted.
Anyway, whats the verdict on Open-SSH install? The one installed through DOS never quite works as good as the one installed via SCP or Installer. The DOS install always gives me the group errors, and after this latest update I am experiencing it again. I'd like to fix this with a pxl install or a drag and drop. Whats your take on that? I think I read in another one of your threads you installed open-ssh over the dos installed version, but I can't remember if that was a 1.1.1 -> 1.0.2 downgrade post or not.

Now that summerboard is working i'm really tempted to jailbreak my phone again.

I'm also using winrar... the files are Installer and itunesmobiledevice... also... when you say connect to your wifi network, you need a wireles ethernet card for that right? What if you don't have a wireless ethernet card... simply out of luck?

Hmmm, maybe they corrupted during your DL or something. When I tested them they were OK. You might just try DL'ing them again.

It depends on your setup. What you need to be able to do is reach your iPhone from your PC. In my case the same router is used by my PC and iPhone--so I can access my iPhone from this PC even though this PC doesn't have a WiFi card/adapter.
If you are working from a laptop with WiFi, using the same WiFi connection as the iPhone, you are good to go too.

I've redownloaded these two zips several times... to no avail... they are the only files I have a problem with and both are from rapid share... don't know if they are the issue or not but there it is. My dl's come to me via FlashGet perhaps that is creating an issue? EDIT: Yep, FlashGet was the problem. :)
I have my iPhone connected to my computer via USB/sync cable so is that sufficient? When I go to Settings>WiFi> I see one secured network and "Other" so where exactly do I get my iPhone's ip?

Alas, no. You would need to be able to communicate between your iPhone and PC via WiFi. Don't sweat though, as I expect to see either AppTapp or iBrickr updated pretty quickly.
Actually, it wouldn't be that hard to just script the installation of Installer.app instead of dropbear SSH. This would eliminate the biggest hurdle in jailbreaking 1.1.1 right now: the need to use SSH. (Of course SSH could still be added via Installer if desired.)

Did you follow the exact steps in Phase II, particulary steps 3 and 4? Those are crucial. If you aren't sure do all the steps in Phase II over again. Pay particular attention to what is on the screen after step 3, and report what it says (files copied should be 1).
Other things to try:
Restart iPhone again.
Verify username/password are root/alpine (case sensitive).
Try another full cleanup in WinSCP (step 2 in Phase III).
Close WinSCP and reboot PC.

One-click Jailbreak for 1.1.1 (Windows)!
(Much thanks goes to this Website (http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/%7Eyw226/ipod/).)
This will jailbreak your iPhone and install Installer.app. When it's finished you will have Installer on your springboard! No need to patch the springboard either--it's all done for you automatically.
I tested it and it works. No need to fumble around with SSH. No need for WiFi.
Before beginning be sure you are on a freshly restored/updated 1.1.1 iPhone. You also need to ensure that .NET framework 3.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10CC340B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043&displaylang=en) is installed before proceeding. If you don't have it get it from Windows Update or here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10CC340B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043&displaylang=en) (or proceed to the longer guide, which doesn't have this requirement).
Easy 1.1.1 Jailbreak/Installer
(Close iTunes before proceeding!)
1.) Download the following file, and unzip it into a folder:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62748112/touchfree4.zip.html
2.) Place a copy of iTunesMobileDevice.dll into the above folder. If you don't have a copy grab one from here on your PC:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin
Or download it from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62133418...evice.zip.html (http://rapidshare.com/files/62133418/iTunesMobileDevice.zip.html)
3.) Visit http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com (http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com/) on your iPhone. (Do NOT visit that page unless you are jailbreaking!)
4.) In the folder from step 1 run touchFree.exe. Don't worry about the "touch" name, it works. Follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure you reboot twice when instructed.
That's it. When finished you will have Installer on your springboard! (Don't forget to install Community Sources in Installer to see more apps.)
You can now start iTunes.
Optional Steps
1.) Use Installer to install Installer 3.0
2.) Use Installer to Install Summerboard 3.0a11
3.) Enjoy Summerboard!
Advanced Users (add more sources to Installer)
This guide will show you how to add more sources to Installer--mainly themes--and how to make sure they can be installed properly.
1.) Download the PackageSources.zip attachment in this post, and extract PackageSources.plist from it.
2.) Using either iBrickr .91 (or greater) or WinSCP copy PackageSources.plist to this location:
/var/root/Library/Installer/
You might have to delete the existing copy of PackageSources.plist first.
You will now have access to many more Summerboard themes!
Advanced Users (dropbear to OpenSSH)
Both guides install dropbear SSH. If you would like to switch from dropbear to OpenSSH, follow these instructions.
For those who used the one-click guide:
1.) Install BSD Subsystem using Installer.
2.) install UIctl from Installer.
3.) Run UIctl (be careful with this application). Tap au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear and choose "unload -w."
4.) Install OpenSSH with Installer.
5.) Connect to your iPhone using WinSCP, username/password of root/alpine.
6.) Using WinSCP delete the following files and folders on the iPhone:
/etc/dropbear/dropbear_rsa_host_key
/etc/dropbear/dropbear_dss_host_key
/etc/dropbear (folder)
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear.plist
/usr/bin/dropbear
7.) Restart iPhone. Verify in UIctl that au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear is gone, if so dropbear is not loaded (which is what we want!).
8.) You may delete UIctl if desired (using Installer).
For those who used the original guide:
1.) Install the BSD Subsystem using Installer.
2.) Install OpenSSH with Installer.
3.) Copy com.apple.update.plist.orig from your sshkit folder to: /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.update.plist
(Delete com.apple.update.plist beforehand, and make sure com.apple.update.plist.orig is named com.apple.update after copying.)
4.) Restart iPhone.
5.) Connect to your iPhone using WinSCP, username/password of root/alpine.
6.) Using WinSCP delete the following files and folders on the iPhone:
/etc/dropbear/dropbear_rsa_host_key
/etc/dropbear/dropbear_dss_host_key
/etc/dropbear (folder)
/etc/hackinit.sh
/etc/init.d/dropbear.sh
/etc/init.d (folder)
/usr/bin/dropbear
7.) Restart iPhone again.
End of guide.

LoLs, he just replied to this same question on the previous page.
Its just if you want to swap out the SSH you installed during the modding process. I don't like getting those "Group Connection Errors" every time I log into WinSCP, its one of those programs I use at work all day so seeing error screens in it is a pet peeve of mine. The fix? Open-SSH, which is what those instructions detail.

Yea that's about it. But I gotta say OpenSSH just seems to be more friendly than the dropbear install. I should note that the new "one-click" method does in fact install dropbear, but it uses a slightly different method than my original guide did.
I should note that I couldn't even connect via WinSCP after doing the one-click jailbreak--even though dropbear was installed. Rather than playing around with WinSCP again I just decided to install OpenSSH. Since I like to have the BSD tools installed before OpenSSH I just went ahead and installed them. And sure enough WinSCP connected to my iPhone running OpenSSH the first time, and without issue (no "groups" error).
I can alway copy over BSD World now that I have SSH again. But I'm gonna wait as I suspect this isn't the last time I will be restoring. :tounge:

I would strongly encourage you to avoide Costumize 1.1.1 for now. While it's supposed to be iPhone 1.1.1 compatible it has done strange things. I believe the author is working on another update to clear up the issue. I had to restore due to it.
Most all other apps work. Sketches didn't work, but .04 beta works fine now.
Summerboard works well, but you can't use the version from Installer (as of this moment). You have to install it manually with SCP. You can download it here:

Hey Mike I'm not finding
au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear
at all, is it a subset of something else that I need to click first? I just installed the BSD through installer and then UIctl, but no au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear.
I've synced media about 20 times already and have not self-healed back to jail, so I'm a little stumped.
edit-
Okay, I've also tried having an SCP connection open and then running UIctl to see if the au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear would then appear, but no dice. I'm going to review your instructions again, maybe I missed something :P
edit-2
Just checked Installer to reinstall the BSD subsystem to double check my steps and it looks like my BSD install didn't stick. I had gotten a text and a call during the unpacking process and didn't follow up with Installer after that. Its unpacking again, lets see how it goes this time.

Hold on a sec... the guide for removing dropbear SSH is for those who jailbroke using the one-click guide.
I'll throw something up about removing the dropbear that was installed via the original guide.

Well, BSD from installer installed on top of BSD-world just fine :gasp:

If that works for you, yes.
But if you have trouble, due to dropbear or lack of BSD tools, I wouldn't spend much time on. Instead I would just follow the Dropbear to OpenSSH instructions in the one-click guide. Logging in via WinSCP is the same (the first time you connect to OpenSSH it will take awhile as it generates the keys, but after that it should be fine).

For those who used the original guide:
1.) Install the BSD Subsystem using Installer.
2.) Install OpenSSH with Installer.
3.) Copy com.apple.update.plist.orig from your sshkit folder to: /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.update.plist
(Delete com.apple.update.plist beforehand, and make sure com.apple.update.plist.orig is named com.apple.update after copying.)
4.) Restart iPhone.
5.) Connect to your iPhone using WinSCP, username/password of root/alpine.
6.) Using WinSCP delete the following files and folders on the iPhone:
/etc/dropbear/dropbear_rsa_host_key
/etc/dropbear/dropbear_dss_host_key
/etc/dropbear (folder)
/etc/hackinit.sh
/etc/init.d/dropbear.sh
/etc/init.d (folder)
/usr/bin/dropbear
7.) Restart iPhone again.
End of guide.

You also need to ensure that .NET framework 2.0 is installed before proceeding. If you don't have it get it from Windows Update (or proceed to the longer guide, which doesn't have this requirement).
Easy 1.1.1 Jailbreak/Installer
1.) Download the following file, and unzip it into a folder:
http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/~yw226/ipod/touchfree4.zip (http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/%7Eyw226/ipod/touchfree4.zip)
2.) Place a copy of iTunesMobileDevice.dll into the above folder. If you don't have a copy grab one from here on your PC:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin
Or download it from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62133418/iTunesMobileDevice.zip.html
3.) Visit http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com (http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com/) on your iPhone. (Do NOT visit that page unless you are jailbreaking!)
4.) In the folder from step 1 run touchFree.exe. Don't worry about the "touch" name, it works. Follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure you reboot twice when instructed.
That's it. When finished you will have Installer on your springboard! (Don't forget to install Community Sources in Installer to see more apps.)
Used the easy installer method and when running touchfree got nothing but the flashing dash...!....
I'm not terribly bright here so any direction appreciated
Thanks guys

I knew it was too good to be true. I jailbreaked using the one-click method fine. I then installed OpenSSH and everything was cool.
Went ahead and used WinSCP to manually install Summerboard, followed instructions precisely. Now my iPhone sticks at the Apple logo on bootup. Luckily I can still use WinSCP to get in.
Any ideas? Also anybody have the original /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist?
I assume if I put this back, it'll at least reload the regular Springboard over Summerboard.
Could this be a permissions thing? I checked the permissions on Framework and SMBPrefs.app and it all looks good. Really puzzled.

I'm going to restore, I couldn't figure out what the problem was and I can't be without my phone.
I don't know if it was even Summerboard or something else but my guess is it was Summerboard.
This is exactly all I did...
1. Run Touchfree v5 - worked perfectly no issues
2. Follow instructions to uninstall Dropbear and install OpenSSH.worked perfectly
3. Install Summerboard manually - disaster!!!
I'm no fool, I'm a very technical person and familar with Unix. I followed the instructions to the T...either there's something wrong with the files or something got screwed up along the way. The only part I can think of apart from Summerboard was the Dropbear -> OpenSSH switch or something with the BSD Subsystem install
I am tempted to try again but don't know if it's worth the hassle. Time to go back to a stock iPhone. :( :(

Can I ask you guys a stupid question or 2?
I only need to do this if I want Summerboard, right? I really want to get my summerboard back, but it sounds like more work then it is worth.
And how do you copy the files to the iPhone without iBrikr? Is that what the openSSH is for? Ive read a fricken ton of threads and still dont completely understand.
So is it...
Jailbreaking = 3rd party apps
openSSH = ability to copy files manually to the iPhone? Or is that what WinSCP is for?
Thanks

I just restored and since I'm not feeling too tired, I am trying it ONE more time.
:D
So far Jailbreak is done, now I'm installing BSD Subsystem, then UICTL to disable Dropbear, then install OpenSSH, remove dropbear and then go for the Summerboard manual install of death - part deux.
I have to say if nothing else I'm impressed with the iTunes Restore feature...took 5-10 mins to completely restore and then another 5 mins to restore from a backup!!
Makes it worth giving it another shot.
Hopefully I won't have the same problem twice...I'll be making backups of any original files I overwrite anyway

I think I found the problem. I installed Summboard 2.11 from Installer (know it's not the right one) first, then before rebooting, overwrote the files which normally shouldn't make a difference...except....it looks like the right location for Summerboard.Framework is the Library\Frameworks folder NOT the System\Library\Frameworks which is in the Install doc.
I used the Library\Frameworks folder this time instead of what is written in the Summerboard install file and it works...weird.
Anybody know some good themes? :)

So now I'm stuck.
Make sure you have the latest version of QuickTime installed.
If you do search your PC for qtmlclient.dll, as there is probably an older copy around that is getting in the way. Rename any older copies till jailbreak is complete.
Also, make sure you have .NET 2.0 framework installed on the PC.

Oh hey, I checked out the (much thanks goes this website link) on the top, the touchfree guide is actually for the IPOD TOUCH, thats why it can use wifi to go to the website, but us iPhone CAN'T, because our phone need to be activated before we can use wifi
This definitely works for the iPhone; I don't own an iPod Touch.
And while you do need to use a different tool than this guide to activate a totally virgin iPhone, you can get to Safari and WiFi without activating.
To get to Safari on a non-activated iPhone (WiFi network should be open--won't work with WEP/WPA protected WLANs) use the following instructions, which came from here:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10378&page=2
On your non-activated 1.1.1 iPhone:
1. enter "*#307#" press call, now use the back button on the top of your screen to remove "*#307#", now enter "0" , press call, press answer, press hold, press decline. And you get to the contact list.
And thereafter every time you push the homebutton you just slide the "emergency call" slide, then enter "0", press call, press hold, press decline
2. Push contacts, end call and you get called again, this time hit decline and you access one of menus with favorites, you can edit contacts, do a test ride on keyboard, take photos etc.
3. Now edit a new contact and type in a web-address
4. When you tap the address safari opens but only displays an error saying that it cannot access the website, it also looks like safari freezes up.
5. Now press the home button, and for a split second the iPhone shows a screen where you can select wi-fi networks. Now you have to be really quick and select a network before the phone freezes.
6. Next you get Back to the "emergency call page" and every on screen button has frozen so the only thing you can do is turn off the phone.
7. Turn the iPhone off then on again
8. Now you can go back to the contact list by Dialing 0, push call, then answer, then contacts, then hit that web address you typed in.
19. And Voilla, you can now use your iPhone with safari....

Well it looks like that webpage is not working right now.
I have a copy of the tiff in question but it appears it needs some php code that was on the website. Hopefully the site will either be back up soon, or someone else will soon host it.
Don't forget you can still use the longer guide. I might update that guide to make it simpler.

I have a trouble.. Please help me.
I went to http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com (http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com/) with Safari on my 1.1.1 iPhone, and I could see Safari can't run the page and go to home screen.
I heard that it's normal.
However, the problem is next step. (I have .Net Framework 2.0)
When I run the touchfree.exe, it shows me..
Stage one (type 'touchFree.exe one' at the command line to resume from here in the future)
Reading iPod flash image...
Failed to read iPod flash image, trying again. (Did you remember to visit the jailbreak site with Safari?)
Reading iPod flash image...
keep repeating this step only.
I tried to re-connect to http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com (http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com/), but it's same.
Also, I followed older one which is on the first page on this thread.
However, I can't remember the exact message but it told me my iphone was not jailbrkoen.
I tried to restore and do it again, but same thing.
What can I do? please help me. I really want my 3rd party apps!!
I'm a AT&T user and never tried to unlock, but I used 3rd party apps on 1.0.2.

Thanks Tinman, I got it to work after a couple of tries. Now I have to figure out how to load summerboard. Do I have to do that manually using WSCP or can I install it right from the installer app?? I see a ton of posts and threads about installing it manually, so Im assuming thats what Ill have to do.

Yes right now you do have to install Summerboard manually. Hopefully it will be out on Installer/iBrickr soon enough.

Yes it was just added to iBrickr. iBrickr 0.91, the first version to work properly in 1.1.1, is also new. Things are getting even better.
Sure would be nice if Installer was more up-to-date though. I noticed iBrickr has had BeatPhone 0.25 for days now. That's the version that works properly with 1.1.1 but Installer only has 0.24 (which doesn't work well with 1.1.1). Oh well, in due time...

1.) Download and run the following file:
http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/touchfree-setup.exe
2.) Run touchFree-setup.exe, installed in step 1.
3.) Follow the easy on-screen instructions. Be sure you reboot twice when instructed.
http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/ss1.jpg
That's it. When finished you will have Installer on your springboard! (Don't forget to install Community Sources in Installer to see more apps.)
Optional Steps
1.) Download iBrickr 0.91, and unzip it into a folder:
http://ibrickr.com/downloads/ibrickr_v0.91.zip (http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/%7Eyw226/ipod/touchfree4.zip)
2.) Run ibrickr.exe and follow instructions for PXL support (go to Applications).
3.) Use iBricker to install Summerboard 1.1.1 (not 2.11)
4.) Enjoy Summerboard!

Hey TinMan, your Xtra Easy Guide has an incorrect link:
http://www.everythingiphone.com/forum/iphone-modifications/guide-easy-jailbreak-1-1-1-without-restoring-to-1-0-2-windows-14330-9.html#post123403
Under "Optional Steps" it refers to a download of the latest iBrickr, but the link actually downloads a zip file of the touchfree app.
Small nit, but I thought you'd want to know since these guides are quickly becoming the definitive source for 1.1.1 freedom. :)

Do you mean the iPod app, or that you have an iPod (touch). If a touch, I don't know--didn't plan on this being used for touches.
In any case if you hold down the sleep and menu buttons for approx. 25 seconds you should get to the restore screen, which will then let you restore using iTunes.

Guys, stupid question. What do you mean "it's on ibrickr"?
I used ibrickr just to load NES roms when I was on the last version of firmware.
Isnt ibrickr just a method for getting files to the iphone?
Would'nt I still have to download Summerboard from the link I found on nullriver.com, then follow the manual install instructions?
Or does ibrickr have applications to load without going through all the manual steps?
Thanks again to all on these forums, learning how to mod the iPhone is quite addictive! My wife says I need some serious help!

When you run iBrickr, one of the options says "applications". When you click that, you will see a list of applications, pretty much, but not totally duplicating what you see on "Installer".

Welcome to Everything iPhone!
I do not recommend you update your unlocked 1.02 iPhone at this point, at least not using these guides. Stay with 1.0.2 for a while, as simpler jailbreak/unlock/re-unlock solutions are no doubt on their way.

To be clear, are you guys using the GUI version of touchFree?
While I was able to use it, I'm beginning to wonder if it is less stable than the prior version. Please report if the GUI version worked for you. If the success rate is poor I will revert the guide to the earlier version. The GUI version starts with this screen:
http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/ss1.jpg
EDIT: I've pulled the GUI version from the guide. For now it's far too hit-or-miss to be used with the iPhone. I've reverted the guide to use the version I know works consistently.

Hey butt, this happened to me my first time around. I shut down touchfree, then restored the iPhone again, then started the process from scratch and it took. Try another restore on the iPhone. It needs to be completely empty for this process to work.
Also, just a side note. I was having problems with the process and I visited modmyiphone forums. Someone on there suggested downloading .net framework 3.0 instead of 2.0. After I did that, rerestored the iphone and started the jailbreak again, everything went fine.

OK, please try restoring your iPhone (hold down menu and sleep buttons for 20-25 sec, then let iTunes restore).
Then see if these steps work:
1.) Download the following file, and unzip it into a folder:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62748112/touchfree4.zip.html
2.) Place a copy of iTunesMobileDevice.dll into the above folder. If you
don't have a copy grab one from here on your PC:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin
Or download it from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62133418...evice.zip.html
3.) Visit http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com on your iPhone. (Do NOT visit that page unless you are jailbreaking!)
4.) In the folder from step 1 run touchFree.exe. Don't worry about the "touch" name, it works. Follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure you reboot twice when instructed.

OK, that's it: the GUI version of touchFree is just too unstable for iPhones.
I've reverted the guide back to the process I've used twice in a row with success:

Duck, how long did you let it sit at the blank screen before closing the window?
Also, did you have the iPhone connected to the PC at that time?
When I went through the jailbreak process, I tried running touchfree just to see what would happen if I didnt have my iPhone connected. It just sat at that screen like you explained. Dont use that Summerboard, it doesnt work with 1.1.1 yet. To get a working Summerboard you need to load it manually using ibrickr or winSCP. Do a search for the Summerboard 1.1.1, there is some good info on there for loading it manually. Or you can wait a little while and IM sure it will be updated on installer soon.

Try it again, I've updated my reply to you, and the guide.
It seems the guy changed the contents of touchfree4.zip--it's now different than what I've used to successfully jailbreak (twice). So I've uploaded the copy that I know works to rapidshare, and the guide has been modified to reflect that change.

You have to either copy NES ROMs to /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES or copy them with iBrickr 0.91.
None of these will supply ROMs. You'll have to google for them... perhaps searching with "NES ROMs." :2cool:
BTW: Yes, if you installed Summerboard 1.1.1 in iBrickr it will replace the one already there (doesn't make much difference now, as both are the same version).

It sounds like you have the older version of Summerboard. Uninstall it if you do. If you installed Summerboard with Installer, uninstall it from there too.
When Summerboard is gone, reinstall it will iBrickr. And make sure you install Summerboard 1.1.1:

If you are using the longer version of the guide, I suggest copy-and-pasting, from the guide, the commands that need to be typed into iPHUC or iPhone Interface. This way there is no chance for a typo.

Ah, I see.
Attached is a copy of PackageSources.plist (zipped). Unzip this file and place PackageSources.plist in:

Rename or delete the existing copy of PackageSources.plist first.

Looks like you typed it correctly, but you might as well start over (perhaps with the one-click method).
Disconnect the iPhone from the PC. Then hold down the home and sleep buttons for 20-25 seconds. When the iTunes logo shows on the display, connect to iTunes and let it restore.

For those wanting more themes in Summerboard, use this guide:
Advanced Users (add more sources to Installer)
This guide will show you how to add more sources to Installer--mainly themes--and how to make sure they can be installed properly. Some of the themes expect to see Summerboard installed by Installer. Well we can't use the version of Summerboard on Installer yet, so some themes will refuse to load for no good reason. This guide works around that issue by installing Summerboard 2.11 via Installer, and then immediatly overwriting if with Summerboard 1.1.1 from iBrickr. This will allow all Summerboard themes to be downloaded with Installer.
1.) Download the PackageSources.zip attachment in this post, and extract PackageSources.plist from it.
2.) Using either iBrickr or WinSCP copy PackageSources.plist to this location:
/var/root/Library/Installer/
You might have to delete the existing copy of PackageSources.plist first.
3.) Using Installer on the iPhone install Summerboard 2.11. After it installs: Do not restart iPhone like it tells you to do!
4.) Using iBrickr install Summerboard 1.1.1 (not 2.11).
5.) Summerboard 2.11 will show in Installer under the Uninstall tab. Do not try to uninstall it; it won't hurt anything by leaving it there.
You will now have access to many more Summerboard themes!

1.) Download iBrickr 0.91, and unzip it into a folder:
http://ibrickr.com/downloads/ibrickr_v0.91.zip
2.) Run ibrickr.exe and follow instructions for PXL support (go to Applications).
3.) Use iBricker to install Summerboard 1.1.1 (not 2.11)
4.) Enjoy Summerboard!
I dont know what I'm doing but it does not work for me. i tried this way and the GUI version and both of them just does nothing.... both keeps saying reading ipod disk image.......the GUI version..i let it run for about 20 minutes and it trys to read the ipod image like 2 times and nothing happens... after i stop the process, i notice my phone had like 300mb total space...wtf.. and then when i connect to itunes it stay i have to do a restore...and when it does restore I have to a do a full restore becuase of a -4 error....any help would be appreciated...

Mike,
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but when I run version 0.91 of iBrickr it tells me
Bummer!
Looks like you're running iPhone firmware 1.1.1. This update disables all non-Apple-approved hacks like iBrickr. Fortunately there's a way out. You can downgrade your phone back to the 1.0.2 firmware that's almost as good (minus the iTunes Wi-fi store, and a few other features), but allows iBrickr to work.
You can leave your phone the way it is, and eat exactly what Apple feeds you, or you can downgrade your firmware, free your phone, and...
See how deep the rabbit hole goes
Am I missing something obvious?
Is it possible to use winspc to perform step 4, and if so at what properties and where would I find the file?

Tinman is just instructing you to not restart the phone after you've installed Summerboard via Installer. Instead, you should go directly to iBrickr and install Summerboard 1.1.1 Alpha over it. After that's all done, you can restart the phone to your heart's content.

Yep, missed the obvious. I was under the impression this could be completed after jailbreaking 1.1.1. That is obviously not the case... for anyone else that may be confused. This step needs to be performed mid jailbreak.

Duck, I followed Tinman's instructions to load Summerboard.
I then loaded Customize from the Installer app.
And loaded Dock from the Installer app. Dock is what allows you to make screen shots and it also allows you to hide all your icons and access them from a little button in the botton right hand corner. It looks like a little sunburst.
And then...NO AND THEN...and then I used customize to move my icons to the hidden section of the Springboard.

Okay so last night I spent about 3 hours trying to jailbreak my stock 1.1.1 iphone…ran into a few roadblocks but somehow managed to make it through. So I now have the AppTapp installer on my iphone, and I am up an running version 1.1.1
Now I’m trying to tackle the next challenge: figure out how to really use it.
Everything on this forum has been very helpful, but I have a few questions
My apptapp installer only has a handful of programs listed, vs. screenshots I have seen with many other applications. I have a hunch that I need to get “community sources” through the intaller app on my iphone to open up access to more programs. The version listed is v 2.6. Is community sources 2.6 compatiable with v 1.1.1? If not, then how do you get a larger list of available applications?
Now that my phone is jailbroken, can I use either winSCP (which I have been using) or ibriker to transfer files, etc? Just trying to figure out what I can and cannot use, and the pros and cons to each
What is the advantage of using openSSH vs. dropbear? I have been using dropbear and it seems to be working okay… (and open SSH isn’t even in my short list off apps in the installer)
Summerboard: I know tinman posted a good guide on how to use it, but as far as using the customize and dock apps….they aren’t appearing in my installer. Should they be? Is this related to the community sources issue referenced above? Or do I get this through ibriker?
I know that is a lot of questions, but answers to anything would be helpful. I am very excited about my jailbroken iphone. Now I just want to learn how to use it! It is just confusing with compatibility between 1.1.1 and 1.0.2. Thanks so much

Yes, installing community sources will give you a lot more apps to chose from. Do some searches on here to see if that app in particular will work with 1.1.1. I think most of them will, other than Summerboard.
Now that my phone is jailbroken, can I use either winSCP (which I have been using) or ibriker to transfer files, etc? Just trying to figure out what I can and cannot use, and the pros and cons to each
Ive been using iBrickr 0.91 with some success. I was able to use it to load Summerboard 1.1.1 alpha and some summerboard themes as well as my NES emulator and the very cool Dock utility (which allows you to do screen shots of your phone as well as some other cool goodies.
What is the advantage of using openSSH vs. dropbear? I have been using dropbear and it seems to be working okay… (and open SSH isn’t even in my short list off apps in the installer)
Not sure the answer to this, Ive been wondering the same thing.

DO NOT load the SUmmerboard from the installer app, load it using iBrickr 0.91 and you should be good to go. Stay away from anything summerboard related on the installer app for now. Ive been having nothing but problems when I try to load something like a summerboard theme from installer even though I loaded the summerboard itself from iBrickr. It let me do it once last night, and since then Im having some weird dock issues.
Hope this helps.

Leave private key file blank, but make sure file protocol is SHP.
I cannot get winscp to connect...connection is being refused....do you think its my wireless router acting up? or something else. I've gotten to this phase because the one click method does not work for some reason. im not sure but when i run jailbreak.exe..it say not jailbroken even though i got the read and write access....i dunno man....this is dissappoint me and im feel like a fool for updateing now since it does not work....sigh..lol

Ive been having nothing but problems when I try to load something like a summerboard theme from installer even though I loaded the summerboard itself from iBrickr. It let me do it once last night, and since then Im having some weird dock issues.
Hope this helps.
That helps tons, Thanks. I'm a little hesitant to put summerboard on the phone since I get the impression it is very unstable. However, without it, i am unable to to have more than one custom app on my springboard :(

You don't actually need Summerboard anymore just to have more apps on the springboard. The springboard patch should have already been applied if you followed the guides here.
That said Summerboard seems pretty stable. It's only unstable if you install 2.11. I don't know why the iBrickr folks called it 1.1.1 in PXL repository, as that makes it seem older than 2.11. The version inside Summerboard, on the 1.1.1-compatible version of Summerboard, is actually version 3.0a11. Guess they did this to not confuse people still running 1.02 (and indeed some 1.0.2 users did install the 1.1.1 version of Summerboard).
The bottom line is you should be OK if you install the correct version.

It's hard to say, but I'd first make sure you copied over the correct version of com.apple.update.plist.orig.
That file is often not copied over properly by sshify-windows.bat. More importantly, that file--when you get to that point--should contain the following (though depending on how you view it on a PC, the line breaks might not be correct):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.apple.update</string>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/bin/sh</string>
<string>/etc/hackinit.sh</string>
</array>
<key>OnDemand</key>
<false/>
</dict>
</plist>
The bold part is very important.
Finally, WinSCP is finicky, If you know you have installed dropbear correctly, and WinSCP still won't connect, you might try connecting with PuTTY first.

I loaded SB with iBrickr last night and it operated without 1 issue. Until this morning, when I was stupid enough to try and install the other Summerboard from the Installer App. Dont ask why, I thought I could trick the iPhone. I couldnt.
But anyway, I played with Summerboard for a couple hours after I loaded it, as well as the latest Customize that I also loaded from iBrickr. Everything worked smoothly. Of course, that doesnt mean the next guy wont have problems. And hell, the worst that could happen is you have to restore and start from scratch.

ah, that's good to know, i did apply the springgboard patch. I just thought it allowed you to see icons in general.
So what happens if you dont use SB and just load up more apps than there is space?

I ran into a lot of problems with this last night. first, make sure that your wirless connection is using a static IP (in the phone's properties)
If it still doesn't work, then there is a forum on modmyiphone that deals with this. Essentially you download a ssh zip, replace one of the key executable files with an updated file from the ibrikr zip. then restart your phone. if it still doesn't work, try adding the dropbear file. Again, this is all in one of the threads on that forum. It was definitely sketchy.

Crap, I didn't mean to include "orig" in that filename. The file copied is com.apple.update.plist. But its contents should still match what I listed above.
The batch file sshify-windows.bat copies com.apple.update.plist.hackinit to com.apple.update.plist and then tries to copy com.apple.update.plist to the iPhone. This step fails, and this is what you should see on-screen:
--------PHASE 4: Putting init framework into place---------
1 file(s) copied.
1 file(s) copied.
s_iPhoneInterface
s_Waiting for phone
s_Connection established.
e_Not jailbroken
r_command
fileref: 1
r_command
fileref: 0
r_command
--------PHASE 5: Restarting your iPhone, again---------
The fileref: 0 means com.apple.update.plist did not copy properly. That is why the next step in the guide uses iphoneinterface.exe to copy it over manually. So ensure you see fileref: 1 when you run this in step 3 of phase II:
putfile /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.update.plist

hello everybody...
I've been reading and browsing a lot through this site but just registered and this is my first post.
I am having a hard time trying to do this via the "easy" method. I have done everything as stated in the directions, made sure to reboot, and then made sure to reboot 2 times, after that when I pressed enter, the program ran a few lines, then I was surprised when I saw that an error message popped up saying:
"touchfree.exe has encountered a problem and must terminate..."
I promise I did everything properly from the instructions. I download net framework 3.0, just a few minutes ago restored/updated to 1.1.1, downloaded the touchfree file, downloaded the itunesmobiledevice.dll and put it in the touchfree file.....but to no avail.
any suggestions?

By that point you are nearly done anyway. I would download iBrickr 0.91 and install Installer that way. That should get you going. If iTunes says you only have 300 MB free there is a way to fix that too.
