Tidbits's Glenn Fleishman claims (http://www.macrumors.com/c.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fdb.tidbits.com%2Farticle%2F92 30&t=1192082102) that he has heard from a number of sources that Apple is nearing an announcement "of some sort" regarding 3rd party application development on the iPhone.

Details are unknown but the announcement is expected "soon" and perhaps as early as this week.

Yes, I read that too. It's quite vague, but I do think that we'll hear something soon.

Meanwhile, I'm not rushing out to try the 1.1.1 hacks that are being published when I know that the next update will negate them. As much as I admire the iPhone dev community for its perseverance, I'd much rather have a smaller selection of "sanctioned" third party apps that will last through updates.

I believe all it will be is official support for 3rd party web apps. I am thinking Apple is going to create their own page similar to other web app "center" pages like Appleopolis.com

I've been following the 1.1.1 hacks and it appears they've found code in there to support installed 3rd party apps.

But you may be right given this article.

That article looks as though it is speaking towards webapps, which are really nothing new. It likes like Apple is compiling a list of web sites that you can go to for "real" 3rd party apps, which is well. I will just leave it at that. There is nothing new it is just formated nice so people can say "WOW look at all those apps you can get with your phone!!!!".
