Thanks to great finds by members, WE ARE NOW ABLE TO DOWNGRADE OUR PHONES!!!! I just wanted to make a simple guide for people with PC's to follow

Start iTunes and plug in your 1.1.1 phone

In 1.1.1, hold Power and Home buttons and count 10 seconds (your phone will turn off, just keep counting), release the power button but continue to hold the home button until your phone is recognized by iTunes. (phone screen will be blank)

A message will pop up and ask you to restore your iPhone. Holding down the SHIFT key, click on the restore button. Navigate to your 1.0.2 software
(http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3823.20070821.vormd/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw)

Begin restoring...

When it's done, you will get an ERROR, click OK. Your phone should show a yellow triangle. Leave iTunes running and run AppTap.

AppTap might encounter an error as well, however, it will bring your phone to the Activation screen. Once again, start iTunes, ignore all messages from it, and run AppTap. Now it will jailbreak your phone and install Installer. (You may have to retsart your PC after arriving at the activation screen if iTunes isn't recognizing your phone)

Simply use iASign or whatever you use to bypass activation.

Your phone is now back to 1.0.2.

(I am using iTunes 7.4.3.1)

WI-FI, calls, everything fully functional!

What about those of us who will be getting it soon and will therefore have 1.1.1 firmware? Are they SOL? I won't be getting mine until sometime late next week so I'm wondering if these instructions will help me take advantage of the 3rd party apps. If not, I'll deal.

Having the proper firmware to restore with "SHOULD" do it the same either way, but knowing apple.............

The sim error is normal. Now flash back the 3.14.03 modem firmware using "putty". Go to hackintosh for more info.

http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9025

Here are the steps:

1) Make sure you have a copy of the 1.0.2 firmware handy and decrypted
2) Reboot iPhone holding top (power) and home buttons *BUT* release the top button 10 seconds into it (right after the screen goes dark)
3) The iPhone screen will appear to be off, but start iTunes (latest version worked for me on the Mac)
4) Option+Click restore and select the 1.0.2 firmware ipsw
5) The phone will restart and error out at the end, this is expected
6) Shutdown iTunes
7) Launch the latest iNDpendence
8) Jailbreak the phone using a decrypted 1.0.2 (it will flash all sorts of error, but stick with it)
9) Activate the phone
10) It will show the SIM error but you should be able to get back in

Please explain how to use iAsign, I've been trying read about it. Is it a faux-activate and won't affect my AT&T activation?

This was for my AT&T activated iphone. NOT unlocked. I just want appTapp. This thread is going get really garbled with unlocked vs non-unlocked instructions, IMO.

Version I used from "The General" on macrumors:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4260215

"Here's what I did:

1. Plug iPhone in and sync iPhone, then close iTunes
2. Hold the Home button and power button until the screen goes black (around 8 seconds for me), release the power button but keep holding the home button.
3. iTunes will reopen when it detects the iPhone in recovery mode.
4. Holding ALT (on Mac, dunno in Windows) click Restore and choose the 1.0.2 firmware in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone updates
5. It will restore, and throw an error message when it's done. Unplug your iPhone and close iTunes.
6. Download AppTapp 3.1 installer and run it, plug your iPhone in. It will not work, but it will take the iPhone out of recovery mode.
7. Open iTunes and sync your phone from the backup created in step 1."

iPhone works great now. Passwords and gMail had to be re-setup though.

I reinstalled AppTapp afterwards and was so happy when I saw this again!!! :tounge:

AND IT WORKED!!!!!

Woo hoo I can't believe it.

Just as an FYI it didn't work for me the first time, but eventually it went through. The first time(s) when I went to restore 1.0.2 I got an error from iTunes very quickly. But the second (or perhaps it was the third) time it took much longer, like it was actually sending somthing to the phone (it was). After that I still got an error, but I was at the yellow triangle (and not the new restore screen). At that point I knew I would be OK.

I did it on a Windows XP box with AppTapp.

BTW: iTunes asked if I wanted to restore from my backup after AppTapp was complete. I agreed and it seemed to take longer than usual. I thought it was going to put 1.1.1 back on but when it was finished I still had 1.0.2 and all of my favorites, SMS, etc. were back! Wow, I am impressed!

Installer.app is now installed too.

hey tinman, can you tell me how exactly you did it ? thanks.

I just followed the instructions, almost.

1.) I held the buttons down to get to the restore screen NOTE: I did not get to a yellow triangle screen, but rather the new 1.1.1 restore screen (with the music note icon on it).

2.) Within iTunes I first cleared the restore error message.

3.) Within iTunes I held down shift and clicked Restore.

4.) I chose the 1.0.2 file I downloaded earlier (iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw).

5.) iTunes very quickly gave me an error message that said it could not restore.

6.) I ran AppTapp, choosing the 1.0.2 option.

7.) AppTapp failed, and when my iPhone came back up it was still 1.1.1.

8.) I tried AppTapp again. This time it failed and my iPhone was hung at the restore screen.

9.) I let iTunes restore my iPhone back to 1.1.1.

10.) I again held down the buttons to get to the restore screen.

11.) I again shift-clicked restore and chose my 1.0.2 image (iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw).

12.) This time iTunes took a while while it said "Updating iPhone." During a reboot I noticed the yellow triangle was back. It was at this point I was fairly confident it would work.

13.) After step #12 was complete iTunes gave an error message (1013 IIRC). I ignored it.

14.) Ran AppTapp again and all was well.

I can't believe how much I missed my modded, 3rd-partied, iPhone. All of that wiped out for essentially the ability to buy songs and I think there is no comparison: I will take the mods and 3rd party apps anyday.

AcidMX, I'm glad you're making some progress. Been reading about your adventures for past few days. IMO, if it's not working correctly restore back to 1.1.1 and then downgrade to 1.0.2 all over again.

Haha thank you.

But honestly it just doesnt restore or upgrade properly. I just want to fix the wifi and be done with it

Does anyone know if you can go back from using iTunes 7.4.2?
I've tried some methods of going back, and no luck. Keep getting "Error Code 1", what ever that means.

No your not doing it right.

Your not getting it into the right mode.

You have to restart sleep/wake+home button for 10 seconds (You should count)

As soon as the screen shuts off let go of the sleep/wake button but keep holding the home button.

Mind you that the phone should be already plugged in and itunes should be running. Keep holding until iphone sees your phone. Your phones screen should be off.

I guess it thinks its activated? I really dont know. I just want my wifi back.

For $400 just being able to take pictures and listen to music doesnt cut it for me.

ERROR CODE 1: Many people are going to get this. I got error 1 twice then iTunes restored to 1.1.1. Afterwards, I tried it again and iTunes allowed a 1.0.2 restore. iTunes will start saying Restoring, verifying software, and installing firmware. Good Luck.

No kidding...it really took me like 6 tries and 3 "re-udates" to the 1.1.1.....But there is hope for those who try to down grade to 1.0.2 and can't seem to get the hang of it at first.

I am installing installer right NOW...i can't wait to have my mods back! Thanks to the people that figured this all out.

NOTE TO SELF: DO NOT UPDATE WITHOUT WAITING!

Thanks Mike. I had to say something...I mean I have been reading a lot of the posts on various topics on this site and a lot of people just b!t@h about everything. Sometimes, I truly think that most iPhone owners on this site are 5 year old fat kids that complain JUST TO COMPLAIN. But Mike....you seem to have it all under control.

Thanks again for the props.

For those that have done this, couple of questions:

1 - I see mention of using AppTap as a required part of the process. I assume you're able to download/install during this process? It will still work if it wasn't on there to begin with, right (meaning restore isn't putting back on for you)?

2 - Once you're all done with the process, can you then do a standard Restore to Factory, removing AppTap and all mods/jailbreaking/etc? Will the unit be totally back to factory at that point?

While I'd love to remove 1.1.1 from my device, I don't particularly need any of the current 3P apps, and don't want to go from Apple's required software, to AppTap (or some other) required software in it's place :)

KUDDOS! To those who figured this process out, and passed it on though! This is a HUGE 1-finger Salute to Steve and the rest of Apple :)

The first time i ran apptap it just booted to a factory 1.0.2 phone.
I to restart and run apptap a second time to get the installer.

I am fairly certain that is what I had to do too. At the time I was in shock after finding out that this was possible and everything is kinda blurry.

Ok when you are only holding down the home button does your itunes recognize your phone after a while. If it does then that is when you stop pushing the home button.

Has anyone here who backstepped from firmware 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 tried to go a step further and attempt to downgrade to 1.0.1 or 1.0 (after the 1.0.2 was successful) ? I'd be curious to see if this would affect the baseband/modem firmware in any way.

has anyone who downgraded noticed the reception bars lower? I was wondering If having the newer modem firmware is affecting something, It seems to go from full service to none sometime and generally less bars. I'll try restarting phone and see if it makes a difference, its been restarted a few time since I downgraded last night. I just wanted to know If I was the only one or just being a hypochondriac

Are you getting the iTunes symbol w/ the USB? If so you held the power button to long, when trying to put it in restore mode also make sure you hold the home button the whole time till iTunes says something to the affect of it found a iPhone in recovery mode. Then do the function click or what ever it is with a mac select the right fw and it should work follow the rest of the detailed steps (there will be errors and activation issues) and you should be good to go I did this with a pc so I'm not sure about the steps after the de has been down graded. Hope this helps, i posted this from my phone

Holy GOD am I glad I was outta pocket this week, and traveling this weekend. Somehow the 1.1.1 upgrade came out, and I never knew it. I'm still at iTunes 7.4.0, and 1.0.2 on the iphone. Never upgraded to the lock-your-ass-out-of-any-mods version. Thank you God!! Really really think I'm gonna stay right where I'm at on these iTunes/iPhones upgrades... Happy with what I've got, and happier that I didn't have to go thru all the headaches ya'll are having to dick around with. Sorry it's ya'll - glad it ain't me!
