View Full Version : You bought an iphone, but would you buy it again?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to these forums. I was on the fence about buying an iphone. I actually did some research, bought one, held on to it for two days, did not open the package, then returned it after further review.
I would like to know everyone's opinion. Knowing the phone isn't 3G, and doensn't record video (which some free phones can do), and knowing that they are trying to disable your phone if it's been jailbroken, and knowing that these issues will most likely be fixed in future generations of the iphone, would you buy this unit again. Also, would you buy it again, since it's not really as compatible with a lot of apps such as a phone running windows mobile?
The iphone has the cool factor, it's sexy, it's screen flip around all flashy like, it's cool that you can stretch the browser etc...but that's all really smoke and mirrors. I'm not talking about actual functionality.
2nd generations of anything are usually better than the first when it comes to technology. I just want to get the view point from people who own them and are using them.
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I think the stuff that you are referring to as smoke and mirrors are actually a lot more useful than you think. The iPhone already has a lot of productivity oriented features. And all the animations and stuff really do help out the overall experience of the device, which in my opinion is extremely important. Apple's elegant, simple, and sleek interface saves you time, just try to use a windows mobile 6 PDA! You will know what I am talking about then. And I find the browser stretch a very useful feature. If you always wait around for second gen then things aren't as fun and you don't get the device for a long time. I would definitely buy again in a heartbeat.

Ok...what do you think of the speed of the EDGE network, compared to have a 3G phone?

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. It's one of the best tech devices I've bought in a long time and it's done everything I need it to do and more. I've used nearly every feature on the darn thing.

I'm right there with ya.
I would buy it again, for sure. I'll probably end up buying the Iphone 2, Iphone 3 and Iphone whatevercomesdownthepikelateroninlife. :)
Sure there are a few things that I miss from my old Treo, but all in all it's the right phone for me. The missing items will come with time. I guess I'm the odd man out, since I'm kinda looking forward to what comes next. Not in a "Steve Jobs better get on the stick" kind of way as much as a "Cool..new stuff to play with" way. (If that makes any sense)
Used to be a big hassle carrying around the Ipod everyday. Most times I'd forget it and miss out on timely downloads of podcasts. Now I've got it all in my pocket at any given time. I rarely use the cell phone, but its one of those things you have to have. It's the proverbial "killing two birds with one stone" kind of device for me.
Surfing on the Treo was clunky and not very good (IMO) Now I find myself (at home) surfing more on the Iphone, than I do the regular PC. Yeah, edge may be slow but, I get better speed than I do on dial-up, that's for sure. Video playback, or any media playing on the Treo was sorely lacking. I also like that I can hook the Iphone up in the car and listen as I cruise down the highway. Makes a long drive home, more enjoyable.
Yes, all in all I'd say that I'm REALLY happy with the Iphone and have yet to become bored with it. I use it every day and still love it to death! :)

Never had a 3g phone so I can't compare. This is the first time I have gotten a data plan so I am just happy that I have any sort of mobile internet. I haven't gotten to the point where I am picky about it :). I can't complain just because of how useful it is for me. But honestly most of the places I go have free wifi, college, home, work.

Is that just because it's apple and you have something against apple, or why do you have a problem giving them another dime?

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. No complaints, here.
And, with the 1.1.1 update, it shows that Apple can radically enhance this phone through software. I look forward to whatever comes next.
It's a new paradigm. With other cell phones, you get what you buy when you buy them. To get an enhanced phone, you needed to buy new hardware.
With the iPhone, I already have an enhanced phone (wireless itunes, ringtones, customizeable home button, etc.) and I haven't had to invest in new hardware. That's better on the environment, too.
I can't complain.

Wow, same planet, different worlds. Radical enhancement are not even close to the words I'd use to describe this update.
No, I wouldn't buy it if I knew what I know now. It's not just about the lack of features or the endless bugginess, it's also Apple's attitude about fixing either problem vs it's obsession with locking down the phone and squeezing more money from us.
I'm quite with Mike, not another dime.
I would for sure. Especially at the new $399 price. There's no doubt. Honestly, as crazy as it sounds, I really like the iphone, but I think I'm going to get another GSM phone that is unlocked to use certain times as well. As long as the SIM can be used in another phone, which I've heard that is does.

I'd buy again. Very happy after 3 weeks. I have settled into my "routine" with the phone. No more showing it off, using it for no reason, and I have a charge schedule. Sunday night, Tuesday night, and thursday night.
My only wish, is that i didn't have to use itunes. I miss windows media 11.

Ok another question. Out of those of you that love it the phone, are you mac userse or PC users?
The two so far that would not buy the phone again, are you mac users, or pc users.
Again, thanks for the responses, this is very helpful. If I decide to re-buy the iphone in the future, I will definitely use this site as a source to learn all the in's, out's, positives, negatives, how to unlock, should I unlock, that there is to know about the iphone.
In fact I'll hang around for a bit and research, because I find it very interesting. This is definitely the first phone that has caused this much buzz and controversy. It's like having a video game with cheat codes, or special parts of the game that you have to figure out how to unlock. It seems that there is hours of research I could here about different customizations that can be done.

I would buy it again as well.
Someone asked how this phone compares speed wise with a 3g phone. Two weeks before the iphone price drop I went an upgraded from my old razor to the razor2 which was my first 3g phone. I thought that phone looked nice and had some great features but for whatever reason seemed much slower online than the iphone. Maybe its the area I live in (philly) but my iphone moves as fast if not faster than the 3g razor2 I had for a few weeks. In fact after two weeks of use and a price only 100.00 below the iphone I figured I was better getting the iphone.

Now that the novelty has worn off, I would not buy it again. I'd go for a Treo (again) to increase my productivity with the SIGNIFICANTLY more functional (if not as slick) software. If I find a good way to sell my iPhone where I wouldn't lose a lot of money, I'd do it.
I'm really hurting without real task management software.
If money was no object, I'd buy a Treo and keep the iPhone for WiFi web browsing and the iPod functionality which it is great at (i.e., use it like an iPod Touch).

I'm with you on that, though it will be rough going back to the Treo. Might look at a new Curve, I really don't know.
For me I pretty much was satisfied with the way my iPhone worked after I had it setup the way I wanted it--and by that I mean with my favorite 3rd party apps and mods. After I updated to 1.1.1 I am left disappointed; and this is not the thread to go into that.
For those of you haven't modded, I would ask you to look at it this way. Let's say the iPod functionality was suddenly ripped out of your iPhone after an update. Don't start with "But that's not a third-party app!" Just put that thought down and try to imagine how you would feel if suddenly you had no iPod (or Safari, or Mail) functionality in your iPhone. That's how those of us who lost our apps feel right now.

I would definitely buy another iPhone. I love it! I'm a college student, and I work for myself. And the iPhone does everything that I need it to do. I can get online and check whatever I need, I get all my email easily (of course, the mail app has many flaws!), the notes and calendar I like, but they need some updates. To-do's would be helpful! But overall I'm very happy with my phone. My favorite thing is the visual voicemail... I have bad reception at home and usually don't get calls, so it's nice being able to see who called and the number and everything without having to listen!
I'm sure as time goes on, Apple will eventually make 3rd party apps available (probably making us pay for them or something) but will make the iPhone much better and "more productive". But I'm very satisfied with my iPhone... of course I'm not coming from using a treo or blackberry or anything, my last phone was a motorola sliver, and maybe I would like the treo or blackberry better, i'm not sure... but regardless I would still get another iPhone.

Ummm...probably not. In hindsight, I think I'd wait until the "ripples in the water calmed down" some, as I don't like my boat being rocked. I think a lot of drama may have been avoided by waiting a few more months. And I don't care much for drama.

I am on the fence with with my answer. I don't really mind the feature set that came on the phone granted *I* believe they misrepresented some aspects as being more rich then they actually were. The real thing that might make me say no is that even with a very strong signal present in the Salt Lake valley the reception on the phone is not the best. It not being the best and being very inconsistent would lead me back to verizon most likely. I had a n LG phone, nothing great, but out here it was beyond rock solid - never had a dropped call. With the iPhone *where I live* I get about 10-15% of my calls dropped or I can hear them but they cannot me.
So in short while on the fence, I am 40% yes 60% no.

Heck yeah I would buy it again, without hesitation. I love this phone. Now that I can surf iTunes directly on the phone now, I'm totally digging it.
I'm also enjoying it's little brother, the iPod Touch.

A guy at the ATT store also told me about the next generation of the ATT 8525. It's the HTC Kaiser. This phone when it comes out here in the U.S. in a couple months will pretty much blow the iphone out of the water. Apple has a way to go to compare to this.

Problem with that is, right off the bat, it only has a 320x240 screen, which is one half the number of pixels that the iPhone has. And with WinMob those pixels are not even used efficiently.
This is actually one of my reasons for being frustrated: on one hand I am ticked that I lost my apps, but on the other hand I have nowhere to go. There isn't a phone out there--that I know of--that works as well as the iPhone for Web browsing, with a beautiful screen, touchscreen without needing a styus, and who knows what else I'd lose out on.
I needed to look up something in my Treo yesterday and I found myself pinching the darn screen! :)

Different strokes I suppose. I don't think I could ever go back to a 320x240 screen--even my Treo's 320x320 screen was an improvement over that (had 320x240 WinMob before the Treo).

I would buy the phone again without hesitation. Just the maps alone are great. It helped us on vacation when our motorhome got a flat. I found 3 tire places right around where we were at just typing in tires on the map for the city we were in, with address, phone number, distance. Also I haved looked up websites instantly on my safari when needed. Not to mention you have your music with you everywhere you go. As far as updates, I don't really care what Apple comes out with. I have so many useful 3rd party Apps that it puts their updates to shame. If I want a song from itunes, I'll buy it on my computer, I don't need to buy it from my phone, big deal! My volume is just fine especially with my custom ringtones (not from itunes). So yes, I would totally buy this phone again. If I had to buy it stock with the new update and no 3rd party apps, I still would probably buy it just for safari, music, maps, and oh ya, let's not forget it works as a phone too!
p.c. I am a PC user, I respect both PC and Mac and would never put anyone down for what they use because it's a matter of choice. I am sick of all the people that post here not respecting ones choice or saying one is better than the other. Can't we all just get along??:tounge:

I started out years ago as a PC user. I didn't buy my first Mac until 1999. Over the last 8 years I've slowly become what's known around here as a "mac fanboy" ... lol, though I'm female :tounge:
My last living desktop PC has just been replaced with a MacPro. I have but one lonely PC laptop left, which these days, doesn't see much action.
So in practice, these days, I'm using Mac most often for both work and play -- and loving every minute of it. Would I have bought the phone if I was still more PC than Mac? Absolutely.

The size isn't that bad. It's thicker than the iphone yes, but again functionality. Trust me my tech and style side are still making me want to get an iphone, I just want to see what they are going to do to improve on a few things like 3G, GPS, but again.....my impulsive side says go get it.
But the Kaiser is thinner than the 8525 is now. Functionality outweighs everytrhing for me.

I think that's the straw that broke the camels back. If I can't even IM and I have a full data connection, that is extremely lame, and I will not buy it. My LG EN-V can even IM, and the great iphone can't?????? Anybody else see a problem with that.
All this negativity is a real head scratcher for me. I bought my first Mac in '85, a beauty of a 400k disk swapping Mac 512. You stuck the OS disk in (yup, the single 400k disk), let it work awhile, then kicked it out, stuck in the MacWrite and MacPaint disk, it worked awhile, kicked out, asked for the OS disk again and round and round you went.
Since then I've owned over 20 Macs and experienced every OS. Thus far, no Mac has been a dead end be all and end all. Every one has been improved on, features added, power added, speed added, new OS releases either total or partial upgrades have flowed right along.
The iPhone is no different to me. I was ecstatic about from the beginning and remain so. Each upgrade adds a little more, whether I use it or not, whether it was the upgrade I wanted next or not. Upgrades will continue, new models will come. One can sit on the sidelines waiting "till the time is right" but whenever you buy in, there will be a better one around the corner.
I knew this going in. Therefore none of this stuff bothers me in the least. Its a grand product, not meant to satisfy everyone's needs yet. You know what it can do and what it can't do as of now. The "can do's" far outweigh the "can't do's" compared to anything else I am aware of.

I think that's the straw that broke the camels back. If I can't even IM and I have a full data connection, that is extremely lame, and I will not buy it. My LG EN-V can even IM, and the great iphone can't?????? Anybody else see a problem with that.
You can IM on iPhone using iPhone.beejive.com. Have been using it since early July (aim).

I would buy the iPhone again without a doubt. As an fyi, I've never owned a Mac and currently own many pcs (nothing against Apple, there just seemed to be more software available for the pcs).
I was interested in getting the iPhone right away, but I decided to wait for the 3G, Flash, etc (waiting wasn't easy). Then, the price drop came and the prospects for a new iPhone coming out soon (i.e. within months) with 3G seemed poor, so I grabbed a 4GB iPhone for $299. I love the ability to get the full (not quite full due to lack of Flash) Internet at any time (a world of information and entertainment in your pocket, etc.). I also love the maps and the Phone Contact support is way better than my old Razr. The Edge speed has been acceptable given what you get at the end compared to the Internet on other phones that I've owned like the Razr.
Last but not least, I'm avoiding the recent 1.1.1 update so I can keep the 3rd Party Apps until someone can get these working on the new update. I was eagerly looking forward to the update all week and then I decided to avoid it. I'm glad they released it when I was at work, so I had time to make a better decision.

I'm not sure what TGC is, so I'm guessing I'm not lol. I have always used DocHolliday though on every forum I've been on and every screen name.
I agree all products not just apple products improve upon eachother. If the phone had a few more features then I'd be fine.
I want to see:
IM capability
GPS
Video capability
Thinks that would be nice to see:
3G
At least word and excel, since there is office for apple's
If the first 3 were on the phone I would buy it and keep it. Even if it had just IM capability and video capability. I mean what kind of multimedia phone doesn't have IM and Video tehse days? At this point I feel it's overpriced and overhyped for what it is.
I will wait until I see some of these added to the phone, then I'd behappy with it. Until then the marginal cost outweighs the marginal benefit in my eyes. That's the basic economic decision rule.
well reasoned conclusion for you as an individual. Look forward to having you back in the future if and when it meets your needs. As Leo leporte said in one of the iPhone Podcasts -- its a remarkable new product that is grand for many for not for all. His conclusion was that for now it would not make great inroads in the big business community for whatever reasons blackberries do what they do (never had one so don't know). I'm a small, very small business man and its all I need and more. I remain thrilled with it as my first smartphone.
Of your list for instance, I almost never IM --- text mess, voicemail, phone calls, email seem to be more than enough, GPS would be nice, but the maps adds plenty for me as I have never seen the need for a stand alone GPS, and I can't imagine folks needing video importantly and routinely that would want to reply on a phone quality video -- would be fun little add on to have but hardly a deal breaker. I swear sometimes I think all the prehype about the phone got folks to thinking it could do everything conceivable under the sun that any stand alone laptop, camera, GPS, music and video player could. Too many didn't pay attention to what in fact they actually said it could and would do. And perhaps I am wrong about what I've read about 3G, but I am led to believe that is not widely available and is terrribly hard on battery life when it is. Sure Edge can be pretty slow at times but the main times I use it is on the road driving or in stadiums checking scores and there's no great rush.
And yes marketing wise I do not understand why third party apps have always been fine with Macs but not for the iPhone and I guess iPods. I'm sure they have some good reasons which I'm equally sure not all would agree with. Just doesn't bother me a great deal with the huge list of things the iPhone DOES do which seem to get swept under the carpet when folks have their individual wants for more it COULD do.
You other alias is a prominent poster on The Golf Channel golf boards. The Woody A reference was to Woody Austin, a 43 yr old rookie on the US team who is playing brilliantly in the president Cup matches going on now. He is quite a character, even played on out of a pond yesterday , slipped and was nearly fully submerged in the pond -- it was a hoot. Dried himself off and birdied the last three holes to gain an important halve in their match.

A guy at the ATT store also told me about the next generation of the ATT 8525. It's the HTC Kaiser. This phone when it comes out here in the U.S. in a couple months will pretty much blow the iphone out of the water. Apple has a way to go to compare to this.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/05/24/htc-kaiser-gets-unboxed/
It's big, clunky and runs Windows. It's just another Windows Mobile device and they're a dime a dozen. This isn't the iPhone killer you're hoping for. Someone will come to market with one, but that's definitely not it.

Different strokes I suppose. I don't think I could ever go back to a 320x240 screen--even my Treo's 320x320 screen was an improvement over that (had 320x240 WinMob before the Treo).

I agree, I look at the Windows phones now and can't believe how ugly they are and how difficult they are to interface with. Not to mention their multimedia capabilities are still in the stone ages compared to the iPhone. I fire up my Q every once in a while to remind myself just how far ahead of the game the iPhone really is.
If I could access my corp email with my iPhone I would have very little to complain about. Meanwhile I just forward my mail to my .Mac account and everything works fine.

Let's just say that my daughter and I are thinking about creating a new religion revolving around the iphone. The thing provides me with great joy. It's hard to define why, but in response to one question of yours, I don't find EDGE that slow. When I first used it, I thought I was on a wireless network because it was so fast. Perhaps, when you are away from a good cell signal it is slow.
My first Mac was the 512 so I may be a little biased towards all things Apple, but of all the Apple products I have owned, and there have been a zillion, this phone may be my favorite.
Anyone need a Bondi Blue iMac or a Tangerine iBook?

Hey guys thanks for the all input.
In reponse to Deac, the reason I want those functionalities is because it is my personal phone, not for business. I have a BLackberry provided to me by my work and the organization has a BES server at our home office.
It's a multimedia phone and that is why I expect to have video, beacuse yes it IS a nice addition, that little cheapy phones even halve. It's just nice to have with you if you want to catch something on video. A handheld GPS that is your cell phone would rock. I want IM, because well a lot of multimedia phones can do that, and it baffles me that Apple didn't account for that. It's a full multimedia phone it should have IM. It's not really aimed at the busienss market. It's aimed at the consumer, techy, hipster market
As far as for tharmsen. You sound a little Mac homerish, which is your right. The Kaiser is thinner than the 8525 not as clunky and yes runs windows, that's why it has most of the features that I want.
I just don't like the fact that Apple is trying to hang it's consumers out to try for another 400-600 for future rollours that will include additions that non smartphones have. And for some of you Apple/Iphone homers you have said here you will be number 2, 3, 4. Well Steven Jobs loves you guys, but I personally think you're getting screwed.
I'll wait until I see some more features. If they don't improve well then I won't get one, which is a shame, because I wanted one. I was very turned on to the phone, and now I'm completely turned off after some research and the reading the sentiment of quite a few owners on this board. There's some SUPER pissed people as I would be myself.

Oh, and one more thing. I just thought about this. You can't load music on this thing anywhere but from the Itunes store, or a CD right??
Hmm that's why I have a Creative Labs Zen Vision:M 30GB. Better sonic quality than the ipod, and I can load all the music I want downloaded from any source. I guess if you can load music from a CD to an iphone I could burn cd's then load them from there, but that's an extra step that is a pain to get music. I'm not paying for every song through itunes.
Now I understand the I in front of every product, it's because in Steve Jobbs eyes it's all about me (meaning Steven Jobbs). Hey Steven, there is no "I" in team

My iPhone was a gift from my company, who have always bought me my phone and covered my calling plan, so I can't say I 'bought it'... in fact, I thought it was cool when I first saw it but didn't think I needed one.
Now that I have one, I think I'd buy one. I love having 'anywhere access' to the web, email, and maps. I also love having one thing to carry when I want phone and music, instead of taking both the iPod and the cell with me. I also dig having video and a decent camera, since my old phone's camera sucked, and my old iPod was pre-video.
Compared to my old phone, I do miss having my custom ringtones so I know who's calling (none of the songs I used to use are available to buy from Apple), and I really miss having a periodic beep telling me that I missed a call (because I miss them often and don't know unless I remember to check the phone regularly). Aside from that, it's the best phone I know of and I'd totally buy one.

Hey Tharmsen...or anyone reading this...
I thought of something. Have you guys heard of http://www.meebo.com ? This is a site where you can log into yahoo, aim, msn, google talk or meebo messenger. you won't have all the features such as in yahoo msn, or aim, but you can message people. Have any of you tried this?
Check it out on your pc or mac and then try it on your phone. Let me know if this works. This could be a little bit of an IM break through for iphone owners.

Wrong! You can and I do load music that I download from eMusic, music that I have captured from streaming audio, books downloaded from various Podiobook websites, converted music from vinyl, etc. But then I prefer to support and BUY my music and videos, I do not care if it is free, I just want the music I want. I want to OWN what I download, and not have it (ala NBC) for a short time.

Well that's good to hear, but remember you never own music. You buy the right to listen to it for individual consumption. The rights remain those of the artist.

Actually, I bought two of them, both the 4 GB model, the first night they were for sale. One was for me and one for my wife. We both would do it again, even standing in line in the heat. We had waited researched cell phones and smart phones for many years, never finding any that we liked enough to get for ourselves before hearing about the iPhone. We love our iPhones and 4GB is plenty big for us. We never had a cell phone or even an iPod before this and we're glad we waited for the iPhones. It was very easy to use everything on it even that very first weekend and without any prior experiece because of how well the software works and its excellent iluser interface. Now it would be hard to live without our iPhones, even though prior to this we lived our entire lives without any cell phones or iPods!
We also own a Dell PC and Dell XPS laptop, both running Windows XP. I have used Apples in the past, however, even though the iPhone is the first Apple product we've ever owned.
We live in the New Orleans metro area and I work in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita wiped out cell phone towers and antennas for all mobile phone carriers, all the companies replaced their old, damaged equipment with state-of-the-art stuff. That might be why even on AT&T's EDGE network it does not seem slow, except in isolated areas.
I use Yahoo for my email and its push email works great for me. I also get my company email on my iPhone, too, and it seems to work the same way: near-instant email delivery to me right after it is sent (by me or someone else).

I would buy one again in a heartbeat. I was on the fence myself, since I just bought a BB of Craigslist back in May. I tried to tell myself that the iPhone wasn't that good. That the touchscreen was bad, that AT&T was evil, that I didn't really need it. Of course, all of that was a bunch of B.S. rationalization. I bought the phone 2 weeks ago thinking I would unlock it on T-Mobile. After multiple failed attempts and totally freaking myself out thinking I had broken the thing, I said forget it and activated with the death star. I have not looked back since. The phone is great, it does everything I need it to and more. I am confident in Jobs that Apple will continue to roll out useful updates, and I will continue to buy whatever Apple comes out with. I am addicted to the cult and proud of it.

Right now, I'm split 50/50.
I would buy it again because it was, and still is, a tremendous device. I honestly can't think of every going back to a cell phone that used standard push buttons.
On the flip side, coming from a blackberry the push email was fantastic, as was the copy and paste, email search, the ability to bcc, and the ability to mark an email as "urgent".

I completley agree that if someone is considering an iPhone and is a business user, then a BB may be the better way to go. As much as I loved my BB, I just got more spam than anything, and the internet of the iPhone is the one feature that I felt was really a huge step for cell phones.
I must say that the new BB's are pretty svelt though.....

I'll be the first to say I'm not completely happy with the iPhone, a few lacking features, apples disposition on issues like 3rd party apps and greedy big business tactics
but i bought another iphone today (((( sighs)))). why? because my mom wanted one........ so i used my iphone credit, and a $30 buck off apple promotion and bought yet another iPhone
i wasnt particularly happy about it, but it was for my mom, so i put aside my bias---- and my mom wont be modding and all that jazz so i think she will enjoy the immensely as is
