Need some help here..
I connected my iPhone, that was working perfectly , to my Belkin car charger (originally iPod) and the screen got all flushed with colors and lines... I could not reopen it so I connected to iTune and did restore. Time after time, the process stops after going deep in the restore finction - and right after "verifying firmare" the process aborts and a message comes "iPhone could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (6)".
Appreciate anybody support here. Thanks you, guys.:2cool:

I had this exact same problem earlier today. I plugged my iPhone into an iPod wall charger I had at work to charge it and the screen started twitching and all of these lines started appearing. I unplugged the iPhone and it's been problem after problem since. I'm at the point now where I have the White Screen Of Death when I plug my iPhone into my Mac. ITunes recognizes the iPhone and when I try to restore using 1.0.2 I downloaded from Apple, I get the same error code (6).

Moshe, did you get this worked out? If so, can you post what you did? If anyone has any suggestions, please post. I've tried the soft reset by holding the home/power buttons but all they do is get me to the WSOD when the iPhone is plugged into the dock. If it is not plugged in to the computer, nothing happens. I'd appreciate any help!

Well - I worked with Apple people for a few hours on the phone, until they got convinced this was some HW problem. You may see a few more people that had very similar problems discusssing it on the iPhone forums. I got a case number from them and shipped my iPhone to heir lab in Forth Worth. It's already on the back to me in less than 24 hours turnaround! I hope it will indeed work back as it should.

Thanks for getting back to me, Moshe. I ended up doing more research on this issue last night and found a few instances of the same thing happening when plugging the iPhone into an iPod charger. Apparently, old iPod chargers are 10v and new iPod and iPhone chargers are 5v. I basically fried my iPhone battery. I was really worried to take it into Apple because I couldn't restore and I had unlocked my phone, but I called Apple Care and got a case number after explaining what happened. This sped up the process at the Apple Store and the Genius behind the Bar ended up just running some basic diagnostic tests that seemed to be what I was trying at home. Once he couldn't get the normal screen to show up, he told me I was being given a new one. I have it here with me and will never be plugging it into an iPod charger again :)

Funny thing, though... I overheard the guy working on my iPhone tell another guy that mine was having the same issue as the one he was working on. They ended up switching out both. I received an iPhone with firmware version 1.0.2 even though 1.1.1 is out now, in case anyone is wondering.

Mercat99, I'm in the same situation you were in. Except, I'm worried if I bring in my iPhone, they would find out that it's unlocked. What did you do before you brought in your phone? For instance, did you remove all traceable software, restore, etc.

My phone has been restored, but it remains unlocked and installer and 3rd party apps hasn't been removed.

I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me out.

Thanks!

Hey LBrown,

By the end of this whole ordeal, my iPhone's screen was completely white and nothing could be seen. I couldn't restore it or anything so I took it in unlocked and with tons of third party apps. Being that it was a white screen, they couldn't see any of this. They only ran a few little tests to see if they could get the white screen to go away but once they were unable to they just gave me a new one. If you can still see everything on your iPhone and don't have the white screen, you should definitely try to lock it and remove third party apps again. But if all you get is the same white screen, you should be okay to take it in. Just make sure you've tried doing a few things like a soft reset to see if the white screen goes away because they will try doing this when you take it in. Good luck!

That's what I'm afraid of. Most of the time, if I soft reset my phone, it boots up fine. but gets the white screen when I put it to sleep. Did you return the phone within 30 days of your purchase date? Is it even possible to re-lock it and remove all 3rd party apps? THe guys that did it for me said it wasn't. I really question their knowledge, since he said to upgrade to 1.1.1 and then return it. From what I've read, the new firmware will brick my phone ... is that right?

I'm so desperate at this point, I have till this Thursday to exchange my phone within the 30 day return policy (if indeed that's their policy).
Thanks again!

Hi. The exact same thing happened to me last night. Plugged it into the Belkin car charger and the screen went all purple. Managed to get it working after that but as the even drew on the iPhone became more and more unstable until I got to the "White Screen Of Death" point when prompted to do an (unsuccessful) software restore. The phone was unhacked.

Apple already accepted my repair and are sending me a loaner tomorrow. I don't live near an Apple Store so had to do that over the phone. The "fix" that LBrown linked to didn't work, but I think the issue he's having is a different one, i.e. not linked to the Belkin Charger.

Yeah, my problem was caused by either charging with an ipod wall charger or installing a corrupted 3rd party app. I was told never to charge your handheld devices with a car charger since the voltage is never consistent. Doing so would damage it in some way or form, but I'm not sure if this is true. Hope it works out for you.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. The white screen came back when the battery was almost completely dead (I'd say 5% battery left). It must of done something to it when charged with an iPod charger. I read somewhere that iPhone chargers uses 5V output and chargers for iPods uses 10V. Evidently, the difference in voltage can damage the device (bummer). Back to the drawing board.

I spent... god... HOURS trying to get around this bug. Used iBrickr to put the thing in DFU mode, shiftclicked the restore button for 1.1.1 firmware, it would TRY to "prepare the iPod" but then after a few seconds, would error out with the error referred to in the title of this thread. (specifically (6), though through different combinations of the aforementioned steps, I could reproduce errors (1), (5), (2003), and (-1) - i was pretty sure I was getting (6) when I was doing everything right, and I was correct in that assumption)

I'd like to take a moment and iterate this to all who may be trouble shooting this same problem - you can be a computer genius, not to say that I am, but I have been there for a while since I'm a professional developer and have worked in development and IT for a decade now at the age of 25, but for the love of god, don't forget the basics!!

This error was fixed for me by doing two things: switched from a 3rd party cheap iPod cable to the cable that came with the iPhone itself and switched the USB port on the docking station I was using to a vacant one. Worked like a charm. I literally spent about 8-10 total hours on trying to get my iPhone restored to a fresh copy of 1.1.1 firmware.

/shootself

Ah well - I learned how invaluable iBrickr and iPHUC can be to an iPhone user in need.

Good luck to everyone out there with restore/flashing problems. I know how utterly nerve racking it can be to consider that your iPhone could be boned. $400 down the drain FTL.

Just in case anyone wants to compare notes with me, my exact steps to recreate error (6) were as follows:

1.) bring up iPhone to screen w/ wire and iTunes logo
2.) run iBricker and have it put the phone into DFU mode
3.) bring up iTunes, shift-click RESTORE and load the 1.1.1 firmware (attained from unlock.no)
4.) watch iTunes restart my iPhone under the "preparing iPhone" screen
5.) wait about 20 seconds, then boom, default error message (unknown blah blah blah (6) -- at this point in time, my iPhone would be locked at the silver apple logo, and nothing externally could get it to come out except a hard reboot by holding buttons down on the device.

Basically, all i had to do at this point was use a first party cable and plug it into a different USB port on my computer, then try the same steps in the same order, but it worked just fine.

sidenote: if you are flashing the phone and getting these error messages and nothing seems to work, assuming you are flashing not because the thing wasn't working in the first place, but perhaps because you just wanted to start over or one or two little things weren't working like they should, iBrickr can be used to "boot the phone" which basically takes it out of the recover mode loop and lets you boot back up into how you had it before you attempted to restore the firmware. I discovered this a few hours into trying to get it to work on my bad(?) USB port.

Anyway, I signed up to add this to this thread since this thread is what comes up in google when you type in the exact text of the error message. The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unkown error has occurred (6)

I have just bought a new Alpine Flip out monitor for my car and the ipod cable to go with it.

I plugged the cable into my iphone. It did what everyone else is saying, lines up and down etc.

After about 10mins, i had the normal home screen back up, but could NOT get a signal (phone was originally AT&T) with an orange sim in it. Has been working fine where I am since I got it, so cant see it being a reception problem.

Looked on Apple's site and they suggested putting air-plane mode on and off and that could fix it.

So thought a restore COULD fix it.

Everytime i do it, i'm getting the same error message come up and the code changes from 6 to other numbers, but seems to always be 6 now!

Cannot get it working.

Called Apple in the US and because the phone was american and also my name wasn't what was on their records that they WOULDNT help me!

Anyone had this more severe prob?

I am going to kent tomoz, so could pop into the apple shop in bluewater shopping centre, but am a little scared....

My other thought was, get a new contract, swap phones and bring the broken one back in 10 or so days!

I had the same error and same frustration.

I tried for a while to fix it - and lots of googling.

I came across this link: http://ipodtouched.blogspot.com/2008/02/fix-errors-when-downgrading-from-113-to.html

If you watch the video it will explain that the error is very common (1) for 1.11 and (6) for 1.14 because of holding down the home key too long when trying to enter restore mode.

I followed the video and noticed that iTunes recognized my Touch within 10 seconds and I released, this was prior to the display screen having anything on it. I clicked the restore option (didn't need to shift to select the file) and it worked perfectly.

Hope this helps.
