Hasn't shown up yet for me in the Installer app, I have been waiting for this!!! What exactly do I need to do with Summerboard to use the Wifi Keep Alive?

I am just chomping at the bit!!! I really have been waiting for the release! A sold IM app would make this what I have always wanting, something to compete with the sidekick! Other than the IM app the iPhone already blows the SK away!

Do you think ApolloIM is better then MobileChat?

That is what i have been using.

coinstar99
09-23-2007, 04:35 PM
I liked the interface on Apollo, and I also liked that I didn't have the scroll issue with Apollo. Also the Wifi keep alive on this release of Apollo is to be awesome! So for now I like Apollo, I am not sure why other people like it.

Now I am going to sit here all night till it shows the new Apollo on the Installer, yea thats how much of a life I have

Yeah, what is this WiFi Keep Alive thing?

Note: I haven't messed with much of the hacks and stuff...never really wanted anything that they offered...but now that there is what is said to be a good version of an IM app, I am going to give it a try.

So I have to install Summerboard and ApolloIM? Because of something called WiFi Keep Alive? What is it?

Thanks!

Haven't found out about Wifi Keep Alive yet. I know basically what it is, I don't know how it works yet. Basically what it does is it keeps the Wifi connection alive for the IM app when the phone is in the locked postion so that you remain connected to your IM client.

The SK does this built in it keeps you connected on your IM client. I don't know how well Edge works as far as keep alive as I am not connected to the Edge network that much.

LOVE the new icon and theme. Looks great!

Especially the choice between messengers.

Problem: It will not let me edit the error in my user name, I must delete the account and start over. I can click the password with a little persuasion, but can't get the user name to edit. It looks like it might be in the scrolling of the screen that is causing the problem? I dunno, but either way I cannot edit the user name once it has been put in and saved.

It says that it supports aliases. But does it support the ability to sort your buddy list by groups?

I see you found it, good. :) Hope the install goes well for you. :)

I notice a couple things i dont like.

One is that any conversations are not populated up top like other IM app's
They just change the color of the icon beside the name.

Also if you type more then one line of text, you can not see it.
It does not scroll to the next line, you always see the first line of text.

you cant do that with either apollo or mobilechat. the reason apollo is well liked is because it now incorporates msn and icq and .mac whereas mobilechat does not. neither allows you to change away messages.

I was just checking Mobilechat's forums and there are a few places where they say that they are going to have an update this weekend. It is an exciting race, to see who has the best IM client for the iPhone.

The more competition there is, the better then product for us!

exactly .. although the developer said they were releasing an update yesterday and we saw nothing and nothing as of yet today .. so i dunno if we'll see an update.

i'll admit mobilechat has a more mac like feel to it than apollo, but apollo has more features as it stands. that may change very soon.

What is everyone's record for remaining connected to an IM client. I can see needing a reconnection every now and then, but five mins or an hour and getting dumped isn't fun.

So far I am very happy with Apollo 1.0. My only complaint, and this is my preference, is that while chatting I don't get that "new message chime" when the person responds back to me "BUT" I do get that "chime" when I am on the homescreen of the iPhone and someone responds. I would like to have the sound on in both situations. Maybe an update will have this if enough people want it. Besides that, I'm a very happy camper.:2cool:

I don't normally say this, but if you search here on the forums this is a topic that has been beaten to death, here and on other forums like Howardforums. mobilechat and apollo both connect using the data connection either wifi or edge, and the send and recieve messages through data. If you don't believe me, search or check out the developers websites.

Ok, I don't post much but I just gotta ask, doesn't it bother everyone that apollo doesn't show buddies status and, mobilechat doesn't show any difference between someone being on, and someone being mobile. Only flick IM does this. I just wish they at least did that you know?
LMK if I am doing something wrong, or maybe most don't care about status?

its ok .. i kinda lost my temper the other day when someone asked for the 10,000th time if we knew when the itunes wifi update was coming. it can be frustrating and i wish people would search more before making a thread.

Apollo 1.0 does show buddy status and you can read the away message. My issue is I have a few people on my list who like to write novels on why they are away, and why the suck, and why when their cat farts its the most amazing thing in the while wide world!!! I can't see the whole novel. Right now I am still going to back up Apollo with JiveTalk. I have both Mobilechat and Apollo installed so that when one gets updated I get notified when I open the installer, so hopefully I see something new from Mobilechat as rumored!!!

Has anyone noticed that this thing eats up around 10mg of space? Not that it is a bad thing, but wow! There are still some bugs with ApolloIM 1.0, but I am sure they will work things out. Now looking forward to seeing what MobileChat will have to offer. Still wish they would both support grouping of buddies.

After playing with Apollo, i notice it lacks alot of stuff.
But what can you expect. Just to be able to message people should be good, but i am sure it will get better.

I wish i could Add new S/N's to my buddy list, because i get alot of IM's from people from forums and i wanna add them to my buddy list. but i cant.

I wish it also oganized the S/N's into my groups, because it just adds them all together. I have about 200 buddies and not they are all together..

did anyone else notice how fast the battery drains while using this app? After a regular shift at work, my battery is at about 3/4 full still. today, i had my aim signed on this app for a while and my battery drained like a mother......also I noticed my phone was quite hot when I would be using it. The only thing I can think of Is this app. Anyone else notice anything like this?

I mentioned the same thing a few posts up from here. The battery was draining faster than my car or laptop could charge it. I restarted and I am trying again to see if I still have the problem. If so, it looks like I'm going back to MobileChat even though it doesn't have MSN.

does it drain just from being installed on your phone or do you have to be running the program and logged in? I can keep it on my phone for if I want to sign in MSN messenger, then just use mobilechat for AIM. But If it drains battery just for being installed then byebye

I always put the phone back into stand-by when I'm not using it and I was still getting a significant battery drain. I only did two short chats over a period of two days and had to charge my phone both days. I was logged into an AIM and an MSN account the whole time. I uninstalled the app since the battery performance was unacceptable.

As much as I want a native app, I have given up on Mobilechat and Apollo for the time being. I am using BeeJive for the time being and backing that up by using IM Forwarding. I figured for the chatting that I do, that would work for now. I really want a reliable native app for IM that stays connected all the time and just works, I don't care much about the fancy features I just want IM. I will just have to keep my fingers crossed right, and hope for the best
