Steve just announced the date (again) and time..
6PM???

Huh????

I'm confused also...and this puts a huge dent in some plans.

ArtGuy
06-11-2007, 02:26 PM
Well he apparently said "he believes" at 6pm. this could be a reason/excuse to have "special event" status applied at ATTingular and Apple stores. Can you imagine how INSANE it will be if people start lining up at Apple Stores first thing in the morning??

Plus the lines are going piss off all the businesses next door to Apple and At&t stores all afternoon long. I don't understand that.

some of you guys are way too uptight about this. first you wanted a release date.. now you want a release hour..? there isnt going to be a guy in a brown UPS suit show up at EVERY vendor with a box of iPhones right at 6PM simultaneously. If you really want one then you can most likely count on having your phone on June 29th or June 30th at the latest.. There's no use busting a blood vessel and having an aneurysm over a few hours.. Don't you have anything else to live for?

ArtGuy

The point is - some sort of organized announcement should be given to the poor unwashed masses who actually want to buy one of these things. I really don't plan on losing any sleep over this. I just hope to avoid an all out mess when I go to pick mine up. It would be nice to think you might actually be able to ask some questions etc.. without the feeling that an angry mob is standing outside :laugh2:

I just called MY local ATTingular store and the dude there told me they will get them most likely the 28th in the afternoon. He told me (insert slight amount of doubt here) that he'd be happy to call me when he found out when they would be in-store, and we can go from there.

I think that Apple stores will end up in an extremely "carnival like" atmosphere which will of course make those passing by wonder what's up with the Apple people (again) but might make it tough to purchase and activate your new iPhone.

I'm looking forward to coming back from vacation, getting a couple of iPhones, and having some fun!

I doubt AT&T stores will follow this "6PM, the iPhone goes om sale" time. The ones that I've talked to told me that are all planning to sell them as soon as they open at 9am on 6/29.

Buy the iPhone from an AT&T store.

Is the phone going to be available at Apple stores too? I thought it was only being offered by AT&T. Does anyone know? I heard that there might not be enough equipment to even have more than 1 or 2 available at the AT&T stores. I am curious as to whether or not more can be found at the Apple stores.

Buy it from an AT&T store at 9am or start camping early in the morning, instead of camping out the night before. I don't think the lines will be that bad to warrant camping out for 24+ hours.

Don't get so worked up. He said SHIPPED at 6PM on the 29th. That means all the iPHones that are purchased through Apple.com that day will be shipped that afternoon. He wouldn't have said "shipped" if he meant "go on sale."

well as long as you don't die anytime before 6PM on the 30th of June then you can have it. but then again the longer you camp out without food/shelter the greater your chances of dying so its a vicious trade-off.. whatever you choose, good luck!

Here is a shot in the dark...you walk into at&t on the 29th and they don't have any iPhones...stay with me...you go to the rep and say where is my iPhone. They tell you you will receive it in a few days just simply place an order with us, we will setup your account and it will be shipped to your door and you will just have to call to activate (like a credit card). I really think this is how it will work. This way they ensure every store has a chance to sell these puppies!!!!!:laugh2:

You know what though, wasn't Jobs' words "shipping at 6pm". I don't think it will be available in any stores on the 29th. It might just be orders that are taken at the Online Apple store that day or (hopefully) pre-orders.

They are still fulfilling their promise to be "available" in June but really got delayed a week and have it in all their "brick and mortar" stores by Tuesday July 3rd.

I was thinking the exact same thing. This is of course assuming that they do preorders or orders via apple.com. We can only hope that this is the case. Either way, I'm still going to be at my local AT&T store no matter what the morning of June 29.

i am likely ordering online to avoid the fuss. If you have ever ordered an Apple product online before then you know that it RARELY takes 3 business days to get your package. Usually received between 24-48 hours after placing the order. Guaranteed to be in stock, and no camping in the 90 degree weather.

I'm just saying. You know Jobs' is very careful with his words. Shipping at 6pm will mean that. He would've said Available at 6pm if that was the case. Mark my words it'll only be available online on the 29th.

11:16AM - "The iPhone ships on June 29th, that is just 18 days from today. I believe it's 6pm in the evening it will go on sale... now, what about developers?" Huge applause.

I couldnt imagine them making people wait until 6pm to buy them.. that serves no purpose at all. You would have all these people waiting around the store all day interupting not only att regular business but the other stores around them. Plus that means that they have to sell these things around whats probably their busiest time of the day.

Thinking about this.. I can't believe he accidently used "shipping".

So I have to assume that they are likely not shipping the product until then. June is the last month of the second quarter. I don't know how Apple keeps their books, but they could be potentially shipping at the last possible minute to get them on the books for the second quarter.

I need to call my Apple store and see what exactly is going on here.

I will see if I can reach them and get back to you guys.

EDIT: So I called the local Apple store and got the scoop on the 29th. They said that they usually close at 9 P.M., but will close the store down from 4-6 P.M. on the 29th to get ready. The man said that it would be like a regular day until four, when they would get the supplies ready to open the doors and start selling it at 6 P.M. So I guess I will get there around noon.

Earlier today, during his WWDC 07 Keynote address, Steve Jobs said that the iPhone would be released on June 29, which “is 18 days from now. At, uh, 6PM.” This was said to a chuckle. I’m afraid he was joking, folks. He seemed very “off the prompter” when he said it, as a light-hearted aside.

Look for the iPhone to be available when your local AT&T or Apple store opens its doors, whatever time that might be. And don’t line up, it’s not Star Wars or something.
Hopefully there right

I don't think so. Read my earlier post on the 5th page, it states that I called the Apple store and they said that they would close at 4 P.M. and start selling at 6 P.M. That doesn't make sense. If they wait to start selling them at 6 PM, then they'll only have one hour of sales at all the Cingular At&t stores. They close at 7 PM.

Maybe he's just talking about the Apple stores.

Been reading all of these threads over the mass confusion. What's so confusing? They've done something like this in the past. It seems pretty clear that you can buy the iPhone at an Apple store at 6pm. Of course, this is 6pm relative to the local time of the store. Seems pretty clear to me.

ArtGuy

Of course everything must be taken with a grain of salt - but that's what the guy told me yesterday afternoon. He will call me when he has a better idea of when they will ship/arrive at the store. I've got an Apple Store 5 minutes away as well, and if the ATT store thing doesn't fly - I'll just shoot over to Apple. I still think it will be a lot longer/painful as far as getting the service up and running at Apple vs ATT.

The fact that ATT sells plans/activate etc.. every day whereas Apple will just be starting that night at 6, makes me still believe it will be a LOT easier there!

everyone, what Steve Jobs said was real. the iphone will be sold at 6pm june 29th. it will be an event at apple stores and at&t stores. because most apple stores and at&t stores close not to long after 6pm. so we know this will be an event at both at&t and apple stores from 6pm to midnight. just like the tiger release and the mini release. has everyone forgot that apple has at&t wrapped around their finger! what apple says goes. its the biggest product launch ever, so why not make it the biggest event ever. even I want the phone to be released in the morning. but if Jobs says its 6pm on friday june 29th. then i expect it to be a big event. just my 2cents. but I will be there from the 28th waiting just incase.

Welcome to EiP! Where are you getting this extended hours information from? I haven't seen any announcements about this. All I saw was the 6 PM reference in the keynote yesterday, but other than an appointment on a picture of the iPhone, nothing has been posted on either site or announced in the media about extended hours and the release beginning at At&t and Apple.
