I'm not sure if this is what you are thinking, but you can send your sms messages to peoples email, and they can also email your phone. I'm not sure what AT&T's is, but with a user on the verizon cellphone, you can send an email to (phone number)@vtext.com ... it will then go to through phone/sms. I have people do this sometimes if I feel like chatting on the go, and they are at their PC.
