100% GUARANTEE

Here is the method to add you own custom ringtones to your IPhone.

http://xe0.xanga.com/444d966546431146150270/s108363689.jpg

4. This song will be in the /iTunes Music/
(if that the default iTunes music folder)

5. Now let's convert that song to a Ringtone. We need to change the .m4a to .m4r (very simple).

5A. If you don't see .m4a, go to Control Panel/Fonder Options/View/
Uncheck [ ] hide extensions....etc.

6. After you convert it to .m4r, open it, it will be in your iPhone Ringtone Folder.

http://x98.xanga.com/eabc03f413432146148597/z108362214.jpg

Click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone. If you want to be sure about the sync, feel free to click "selected ringtones" and check off the file explicitly, though this shouldn't be required.

ENJOY IT!

Yeah, it's a 100% guarantee to show up in iTunes. 0% guarantee to show up on the iPhone.

It isn't working for me. When you open the .m4r file, it deletes it and adds it to the Ringtones list. Syncing hangs.

Actually this process works great. Check out the above post, many have tried it already.

It does work for Mac, principle is the same.

Just some tips, full instructions can be read at above link.

Add Ringtone mp3 file to iTunes and convert to AAC.

Find new AAC file in iTunes music folder.
Right click AAC file and click "Get Info" to change it to "M4R" extension.

You have to delete the AAC file in iTunes player. Then reopen the new M4R to iTunes.

works great for PC also. no jailbreak etc. required FOr PC's though you have to see the file extensions for it to work

Open up any folder. CLick the "tools" tab. Then drag down to "folder options". Then click the "view" tab. Then unclick the box that says "hide extensions for known file types". Then you can see and edit the extensions right in the filename. ..(mac users, all together now, yell "what the heck do you have to do all that for, must be a PC!")

Just set up "william shattner sings Mr. Tamborine man" as the ringtone, sweeeet

Also I noticed that the new ringtones which were from songs are definitely louder than the Apple standard ringtones. I used to put the ringer to loudest setting now it's halfway and loud. That's my experience anyway...

I think one helpful step was omitted.

before you convert the song to aac, get info and set the start and stop time. That way when you convert, it is only the 30 secs or so that you want for the ringtone...saves a lot of space.

Good point. Also it seems to be limited to 3.1 MB per song on the ringtone (via Sobe at Macrumors) ...just so no one thinks there is a 30 second limit. For the PC I used gold wave? or gold something or other that is free to try on download.com. WIth that or other editors you can start your ringtone anywhere in the song you like (the chorus for example) and then paste other parts of the song (the start for example) behind it. Good if you want to have the most catchy part of the song to start off your ringtone. I like my ringtones very long because sometimes I miss calls because I don't hear it.

There can be numerous reasons for that, all of them simple, such as not deleting the file in itunes before double clicking on the new .m4r file. Read

This works great. The only problem I see is that doesn't seem to be a way to delete a ringtone. You can't do it from the iPhone ringtone tab and it doesn't show up in the Library list. Even if I do into the folder on disk where the ringtones are (the iTunes home directory/Ringtones) and delete the file it still shows up in the Ringtone tab.

Open up any folder. CLick the "tools" tab. Then drag down to "folder options". Then click the "view" tab. Then unclick the box that says "hide extensions for known file types". Then you can see and edit the extensions right in the filename.

I had the same problem. You have your itune settings to encode to mp3. In itunes click on 'edit' then 'preferences' then click the advanced tab and click the import tab. Change your 'encode to mp3' to encode to aac. then when you right the click the song it should give an option to convert to aac.

in xp you can right click the song in itunes and choose "convert to aac" Is this available in Vista? After you convert it to aac drag it to the desktop, change the extension (not the filname) to .m4r, then delete the file in itunes, then double click the file on the desktop.

This is a great solution even though you can't use the iTunes editor / trimmer. I have the PERFECT solution to that. Reaper.

www.reaperaudio.com (http://www.reaperaudio.com) Basically free.

Use this to trim your audio, the section you want to use as a ringtone, and then render it to mp3. Import into iTunes and do the Free Ringtone thingy.

Thanks.

It's a full featured editor daw, so you can tweak your file and trim it. I don't think the iTunes trimmer will work on songs you don't buy. It appeared in the demo it didn't actually trim or write the new file until you actually buy it.

So, even though this is a good thing if you don't have an audio editor you still need a way to trim the file before doing this procedure. Unless you just use the whole song.

What I did was load an mp3 into Reaper, trimmed it down to about a 20 second clip of the section I wanted and exported it (rendered it) to My Music in a new folder I made named "Tones" so all my edited song segments will be in one place.

I then follow the instructions in this thread to make it a ringtone. Put one on my phone to test. Works fine.

Went to the website (as I should have before I asked) and yes it looks like garageband. Looks like a nice program for windows users. Itunes doesn't do mixing, but it will trim.

this part you can do in itunes.

pn.md
09-07-2007, 06:31 PM
On Mac:
As stated by others above, you can pick the part of song to convert by:

Right clicking the source song in iTunes, then click "Get info"

then click "Options" and enter desired start and stop time.
Now convert to AAC.

You'll have to change time back so your source mp3 file will play completely for regular playback.

BTW- I'm sure the roadblock for most will be changing extension to m4r and deleting old AAC file.

Cool.

i get the start and stop time thing. As someone who does a lot of audio editing it's a lot easier to do it in a graphic editor.

I'll try this way just to see.

Ok I tried it.

Start / stop in info is workable but how do you get the start stop times you want to use? You can't (or can you?) audition it from there.

Using an external editor like Garage Band or Reaper to just make a new seperate file of the section (and more easily auditioning the section you want) seems a better way to go. And it leaves the original file intact.

By the time you've played around with the song in iTunes trying to locate start/stop times for a section you want without any graphic display to guide you, you could've trimmed a few in an editor already.

To each his own. Great ringtone solution.

Good Q. My ringtone is on the phone and on regular itunes including a custom playlist. It wouldn't let me drag it to any of the standard apple playlists though (big deal, I don't use them). So I know it works that way.

I would guess that probably by renaming the song or renaming plus converting a duplicate back to .m4a (aac) or maybe MP3? would make itunes see it as a different song? I will have to experiment with it this evening but somebody should be able to give input before then to say definatively.

I agree using the editor as the very first step is the best option unless you are happy with the song exactly as is. Never played with an editor before today but after downloading free to use gold wave I was able to rearrange parts of a song and put them in different places in just a few minutes and it sounds professional.

In regards to trimming a song in iTunes:

When you convert an mp3 song on your iTunes playlist to AAC
you do not have to delete the original mp3 song from the playlist. Because when iTunes converts, it actually creates a new AAC file. The original mp3 song is still there and you do not need to delete it and it can be played as normal.

After that (I trimmed and imported 2 more) it got buggy. The first one was gone although it was still checked, the second one didn't get listed at all and the third one was in my "Sounds" library on the iPhone 3 times.

I played them to make sure and it was the same ringtone 3 times. I go remove them all (uncheck sync ringtones) and they're all gone. Sync one. Perfect. Sync two .. buggy.

Needs some work here.

make sure to put it back into your playlist for your iphone if it was originally there.

Multiple ringtones are working for me. One guy said he could only put 6 on.

Sounds like your problem is where/how itunes puts the file when importing. Are the file names all different? Are all 3 files the same in terms of no protection? Are they all under 3.1 MB? Do you have some free space on your phone? Of course it could be an itunes corruption issue. My Itunes started doing weird things (not ringtone realted) like that about 3 weeks ago and I had to reinstall.

Here is another method to load songs I think that Peace at macrumors posted but that may not address the problem you are having:

The best conversion method I've found is this :

Open the song in Quicktime.
Export it as "Movie to iPhone"
This way it's ready for the iPhone.Just change the extension from *.m4v to *.m4r.

Works like a charm

Yes. The ringtone is still on the hard drive and listed in the ringtone tab. That's because it's in a folder called ringtones.

I followed the direction to the T and it still won't show up in the ringtones tab.

did you delete the old file in itunes before double clicking the new .m4r file?

Did you make sure the file extension has changed, not just the filename?

Is it under 3.1 mb?

try an unprotected song to make sure that is not the issue

I followed the direction to the T and it still won't show up in the ringtones tab.

After i changed mine to .m4r i double clicked on the new file and it disappeared, i then checked under Itunes Directory and a new folder called ringtones '\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Ringtones'

It had been automatically moved here by Itunes. I then checked under Iphone and ringtones (in itunes) and it was there...

you just have to make sure you double click or play the file after renaming it.. Itunes seems to do the rest.

Ok I get it to show up but it wont show up on the phone.

I was having trouble as well the I realized that my issue was, that my music is store on an external drive. I unhooked the drive and tried it with itunes using my internal drive. It worked like a charm.

Looking For this version of Itunes....does anyone know where I can download

The only place you can download iTunes is from Apple. Please do no ask for older versions of iTunes in this forum, as it is against forum policy. Not to mention, Apple wouldn't take kindly to it.

Download AppTapp for Mac and install it. Then use Installer on the iPhone to load SendSong and send the songs you want to Ringtone. It works great!

Any idea how to do this on a Mac?

You're there, if it shows in the tab in itunes, just sync your iphone and you should find the ringtone on your phone! No, I'm not there. I already said it didn't work. I've tried so many times that I have multiple copies of the same ringtones in the tab, like 25 ringtones now, and none will sync to the phone. I'm very computer-literate and I've followed the steps to a T, and the tones won't sync.

Windows Vista Ultimate. I noticed too, that I kept changing the file names of the ringtones in the music/itunes/... folder, but it kept changing them back. I tried renaming them because the original files where in a different folder. Oh, I forgot. After I deleted the m4a from the itunes library I uninstalled and then reinstalled itunes, just to see if it would clear up the 3 copies of each ringtone, it didn't, but then I click the dot that said sync all ringtones, and for some reason it worked.

I got everything to work (so I thought), my 20 second long (400kb) .M4R file was listed in iTunes as a ringtone and my original AAC file deleted. When I click SYNC to the phone, I get an error message that says "My song was not copied to the iPhone because it cannot be played on this iPhone."

I have the most recent software version 1.0.2 on the phone. Any reason the song cannot be played?

Are there any restrictions to the files that I should be aware of or has anybody else come across the same problem?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks, Andrew.

It still works if you didn't update to new version of iTunes 7.4.1. I'm still on iTunes 7.4. Somehow I have the ringtones tab on the left and it syncs fine as M4R files. Also to delete a ringtone, just right click delete in iTunes and it was gone.

BTW- for Michael Jordan fans, I made a ringtone out of the "Be like Mike" commercial. I love it...

Andrew, if you've upgraded to iTunes 7.4.1 then you may have to go with m4a approach...

You're probably using the wrong extension. You have to use m4a not m4r.
iTunes 7.4.1 made the m4r ringtones incompatible.
You have to change the ringtone extension to m4a.

Refer to this thread:

i figured out how to do it! lol finally... once you go back to the ringtone folder that was automatically made, you change the file from .m4r to .m4a..... (that way the iphone can play it) so then when you go to play the ringtone in itunes, it says "cannot locate the file", so you locate it in the folder, and viola... the iphone can now recognize the file and it's still in the Ringtone tab.

pn.md

In short:

If you have iTunes 7.4 you need to perform the following conversion:
mp3-->m4a-->m4r

If you have iTunes 7.4.1 you need to:
mp3-->m4a-->m4r-->m4a

For Mac:

Same as Brianlamar but little different phrasing
1. open mp3 ringtone to iTunes
2. convert to AAC under "Advanced"
3. Right click new AAC file in playlist and click "get info." Memorize file location.
4. Now delete the mp3 ringtone and AAC file from iTunes Playlist but choose to "keep files"
5. goto itunes folder where AAC ringtone is. Change from m4a to m4r by right clicking and "get info"
6. Double click this m4r file (this will add it to iTunes ringtones)
7. goto iTunes Ringtones folder and change from m4r to m4a by right clicking "get info"
8. in iTunes choose to sync the ringtones you want
9. sync iPhone

in short:
mp3--> m4a-->m4r-->m4a

For anyone who needs it. I followed this and it finally worked for me. :2cool: Thanks a bunch.

After the final relabeling to m4a, I tried to play the song in the ringtone tab but Itunes was looking for the the m4r file. It did allow me to assign (trying to play the ringtone) the m4a file to the ringtone tab in Itunes.

1. Do you have the lastest version of iTunes? 7.4.1.2. Check by going to "help", "check for updates" Also, is firmware on iPhone at 1.02?
2. Are you straying from the steps at all? It has to be done exactly as written. if not, start over by deleting files from explorer and itunes library
3. Did you convert by using the iTunes program, not just renaming the file?
4. Might sound stupid, but double check that a) rename is correctly written b) you are renaming the correct file
5. make sure you're right clicking "show in windows explorer" on the aac file, not the mp3 file. easy to confuse the two. you can see which is which by right click, "get info"

Hope you can get it to work.

If you mean when you click on ringtone after changing filename extension then you're on the right track. It should ask you "would you like to locate". Find the file, click okay, and it should instantly start playing ringtone in itunes.

hopefully you are at step 9.

So they've already released a patch to stop us making our own rings eh? That blows. Oh well... guess it could only have lasted so long.

I can live without free rings if they'll freakin' allow a reminder beep when you miss a call. Since I got this phone people keep getting pissed at me for not returning their calls... I didn't even know I'd missed them 'cause this thing doesn't do anything unless you wake it up!

Here is the method to add you own custom ringtones to your IPhone.

Requierement:
iTunes 7.4.

1. Install iTunes 7.4, restart the system.
2. Open iTunes
3. Convert a song.mp3 to AAC (from your playlist)

http://xe0.xanga.com/444d966546431146150270/s108363689.jpg

Click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone. If you want to be sure about the sync, feel free to click "selected ringtones" and check off the file explicitly, though this shouldn't be required.

ENJOY IT!

[quote=iPhone3.0;93809]100% GUARANTEE

Here is the method to add you own custom ringtones to your IPhone.

I did exactly what it says but (1) it doesn't show up in the iPhone ringtones section even though it shows up in the Library ringtones section, and (2) I get an error referencing the ringtone's name and saying that it was not copied because it cannot be played on this iPhone.

???

100% guarantee?

Help me if you can.

Thanks.

You are probably using something newer than itunes 7.4.0 right? If so, you can downgrade to 7.4.0 and it will work, or you can try the more complicated workarounds for the newer itunes. Cleverboy, the one who originally came up with this free ringtone process, has more info. on how to do it with newer itunes versions here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=351495&page=15

you'll have to go back a couple pages to find it probably. There are other places with workarounds for 7.4.2 also but I trust cleverboy.

Ignore that 100% guarantee thing. That was from someone who posted the ringtone process as if he created it himself (poser) and he probably knows nothing about it. Go to the source, cleverboy at macrumors.

7.4.2 is the current version. If you are looking to downgrade to the version that allows easy ringtone solutions you want to go back to 7.4.0. Don't know if that is what you were looking for or not.

Also, posting a link to a site that supplies 7.4.0 is against the forum rules I think, so you probably want to give an email address for someone to send the link to you or ask for a pm.?

(1) Just looked at cleverboys blog site:

http://weblog.xanga.com/gryphondwb/615474010/iphone-ringtones---what-did-itunes-741-really-do.html

and he says 7.4.2 closed the door on that particular ringtone workaround.

(2) I still say just stick with 7.4.0 because the upgrades beyond don't do anything beneficial yet. May be a problem when 1.1.1 firmware update comes out though.

(3) I wish apple would make more songs available as ring tones. Are they just milking the labels that they have insider deals with or what?

Now it shows up in the iPhone's ringtones section but grayed out. And it's not really on my iPhone ringtone area so I can't select it.

And it still does NOT show up in the Ringtones sync section - which is blank.

???

Thanks.

Ok I am having so many problems with this. Most of my songs come up with this when I try to convert: "Song Name could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats." What's the deal here?

Also, when I do convert a random song to AAC format and then change the extension to .m4r, it does not show up in the ringtone section. It did it once and then deleted the song.

Any suggestions?

won't work for me ...

could it be that most of my songs are 160 kbps or higher??

i even picked out a song under 3.1 mb and still won't work.

plays in itunes but doesn't show in ringtone folder even after conversion to .m4r

I've converted AAC's to .m4r yet they don't show up as ringtones. I deleted original aac's, restarted itunes, hooked up iphone again. What could I be doing wrong to create these ringtones.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Okay, why do the files show up as protected. What application protects them? Itunes when you convert to aac?

Hmm.... I have the latest updated version of iTunes and I cannot get the ringtones to work. I select a song and change the format to AAC by right clicking. I then go into the iTunes music folder, find the song, and change the song to a ringtone by typing a "r" where the "a' used to be in m4a. Now that the file is in ringtone form, I put it in a ringtone folder. The file still does not show up in the "Ringtone" section on iTunes. Help, please.

You guys are gonna have to do more research on this. It's posted on all the relevant websites for weeks, that custom ringtones are impossible with the latest version of itunes. Like I said before, I would recommend version 7.4.1 or earlier, and then try the different methods to get it to work.

I am actually getting a message that iTunes did not copy the ringtones because it cannot support that (m4r) file type.
