10:08am - "Here's how it works... when you plug in your iPhone a new column will pop up with bells -- that shows how many songs you can make ringtones out of." Any segment up to 30s long, fade ins/outs. "When you're ready to buy, push the buy button and for 99c you have a ringtone."

The inbuilt functionality simplifies the workflow but basically I'm too cheap to pay for ringtones I already have bought music for....be nice if the inbuilt tool supported your own music collection. :-/

I thought something big was coming out. Ringtones and new iTunes?
With the help of this forum I figured out how to get a custom ringtone the first day I got the iPhone.
I figured they would charge something for the ringtone because it is connected to iTunes.
Mine in BSG old theme. (Battlestar Gallactica for those that do not know)

Ya wanna know why ?
Cause I dont have to mod my iPhone and hack new ringtones only to have them zapped every time iTunes updates. I have enough disposable income not to freaking care about a $0.99 ringtone and stay with my OEM non hacked iphone . Duh ;)

You can use something like iPhoneringtonemaker. Costs you 10 bucks (unless it went up) and you can make and insert all the ringtones you want. and you dont have to hack your phone or anything.
So at the cost of 10 ringtones, you can do unlimited... Me personally I think .99 is a bit high for something that you already own, but then again, cheaper than 2.49 or whatever from the carriers for other phones, my guess is that's what they based the price off of.

Because this way is legal and the other isn't.

I'm not sure the other way is 'technically not legal'. I know there are rights restrictions on music, but I don't believe doing this with your own music yourself is not legal. Its fully unsupported by Apple though...
Another way to look at it is this: If you're copying royalty free music to your iPhone, that in itself is deffinately legal...
Also, I have a fried who is a musician (and his own label) who does happen to be available on iTunes. I used one of his songs for his custom ringtone on my phone (not the iTunes version, but rather one I ripped from an actual CD I bought from him). Being he fully holds the rights to his own music (outside of the DRM'd version which he used a third party to release), it was fully legal for me to do so with his blessing...

Also, isn't it true that current methods don't work for iTunes protected music???
I think the reason for the $.99 is more dependent on the fact that most ringtone selling outlets do charge an arm and a leg for ringtones. I think the additional $.99 charge is the only way Apple could get artists & labels to sign on to this feature...

Yeah, I think this update pretty much confirmed my instinct to buy iToner...although the workflow sucks compared to the iTunes demo => importing and exporting to Garageband and then loading into iToner + sync. is a lot of work.

It would be nice if they gave those of us who paid $600 for the phone $200 worth of "free" ringtones.
Actually, I don't need more tones.

Just on a sidenote.....THe iphone now feels cheaper..I mean it is, but I don't know, for me I'm glad some kid is gonna get an Iphone now, and it WAS over priced, but man it sure feels regular now, especially with the new ipod "TOUCH", aww man! lol.
On a better note, now I won't get stopped on the street every 10 seconds :)

"Royalty Free Music" is just that - music in which the owner has given copyright permission to others to use. Just 'cause you bought a song, doesn't mean it's "Royalty Free." Apple provides royalty free music with its iMovie application in the form of "Freeplay" music.
If you strictly follow copyright law, the only thing you can do with a purchased tune is listen to it (not carve it up into pieces and play in in ways that it was not meant to be played). It was okay with your friend, because he expressly gave you permission to do so. Legally, to make a song a ring tone, you should get the permission of the copyright holder.
'Course, that's impossible to enforce.

Ok, well I didn't know you were so lax with your money. Go ahead and pay $0.99 per ringtone. Just so you know, iPhoneRingToneMaker does not mod your phone, updates do not remove the ringtones, and it's only $15 one time. And making a ringtone is the exact same process as iTunes: you select the part of the song you want, send it to your phone, and you're done.

I'm sure this has been answered either here or on the Apple website. But does the song HAVE to be one previously purchased through itunes? Because if that's the case, the actual ringtone is $1.98 (the cost of the song and to make it a ringtone).

Yeah I think your right.
"First, purchase a song that’s marked with the ringtone symbol from the iTunes Store for 99 cents. (If you already own a song that has a ringtone symbol, you can use it.) Then select a clip of up to 30 seconds from your song, set the fade in and fade out, and once you’ve created the perfect ringtone, click to buy it for only 99 cents more. Now you have both a great song you can play anytime and a custom ringtone for $1.98. That’s still less than the cost of most ringtones alone."
