Well, I am very positive that this is the exact same unit as the Duracell. With that in mind, it did NOT work before with the stock Apple cable but now it does -- I think it may be related to the 3.0 upgrade. With the stock Apple cable (and with every aftermarket I have here), it DOES charge the 3G and 3GS. I did have to use a different charge cable (regulated voltage); perhaps Apple loosened up the voltage specs with 3.0?
