There were lots of posts about hairline cracks at the end of July. Seemed they were especially noticable on the white 3Gs and tended to be in the area around the headphone jack. It was surmised that the extra pressure from inserting and removing headphones might have caused the weakness. Do a search for "hairline cracks". I would think you should have no problem getting Apple to swap out your phone. Good luck!
