I would check for shorts with the tin. When I first made the 2-battery version, It got really hot sometimes when charging, other times not. After I reinstalled it in the new tin with more padding and insulation, I don't have hot charges anymore.

Can't tell you for sure what happened there, but I would just double check that nothing is touching the tin.
