I know what you're thinking though: When you set up the MobileMe account in Mail, it'll tell the phone that you don't need to be on the Enterprise level data plan and let you connect. I am willing to bet if you set up your MobileMe account manually it would still work without the Enterprise level data plan.
Believe me, I hope you are wrong and I am right only so I can save $15 per month.

Right - that's why had to change the analogy to similar (or whatever I wrote). I had "exactly" before, then realized the BB server thing.
Curious point you bring. I wonder if the .me users have to have "enterprise"?
