And it's not just unnecessary; it's a MISTAKE. Why pay for the update (and, thus, other apple services) when you can get tons of cool stuff for free already through jailbreaking?

I agree with all but your last sentence. I would seriously object in principle to the charge, like you, but I would still end up thinking the benefits of it outweigh my objections to it.
Also, much as I have loved and enjoyed many JB apps, I don't think they'll stand up so well to the App Store onslaught in coming months ...
